The formation of powders from multi-elemental oxides for the subsequent formation of a green and sintered compact body is a major processing operation in the manufacture of ZnO varistors. The physical and chemical properties of the metal oxides are crucial not only for the formation of a varistor component with optimum microstructure and thus electrical characteristics but also for avoiding the introduction of flaws and reduced yield during subsequent manufacturing stages. Recently, colloidal core/shell nanocrystals have found use in several applications such as solar cells, light emitting diodes, fluorescent dies, etc. In this thesis, optical properties of colloidal CdSe/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals were studied. The samples were prepared such that the nanocrystals were embedded in a UV curable resin. Once the samples were cured, they were placed in different spectrophotometers to measure the absorbance and the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum. The effect on the absorbance and PL spectra was investigated by using nanocrystal samples of different quantum dot sizes and by changing the temperature of the samples. It was found that the energy …

Tribofilms generated in wear tests using lubricants containing fluorinated ZDDP and ZDDP were studied. Fluorinated ZDDP demonstrated superior wear performance compared to ZDDP under tribological conditions even at lower phosphorus levels. Chemical properties and the molecular structure of the fluorinated ZDDP were examined and presented in a previous companion study by Parekh and Aswath [1] using techniques such as NMR and DSC while this study examines the tribological behavior of this compound and the characteristics of the tribofilms formed by it. The antiwear additive Zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate (ZDDP) is one of the most important components of engine-oil additives and a major source of phosphorus. Phosphorus plays a crucial part in mitigating engine wear, yet has been proven harmful to modern catalytic converters. Progressive regulatory caps on phosphorus content in automotive lubricants have led to widespread efforts to reduce its levels. Renewable resource monomer, lactide, derived copolymers and terpolymers were synthesized on a few hundred gram scale with specialty/commodity co-monomers such as perfluoropolyether and bisphenol A derivatives. The modifications resulted in improved properties such as surface energy, crystallization, and glass transition temperature of the polylactide.
Ring-opening polymerizations of L-lactide were performed using different block length perfluoropolyethers as macro-initiators and tin octoate as the catalyst. The resultant polylactide-perfluoropolyether-polylactide block copolymers were characterized by various analytical and microscopic techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis, wide-angle x-ray diffraction spectroscopy, polarized optical microscopy, etc.

Rapid prototyping (RP) technologies have become more than just a fast and inexpensive way to produce prototypes. Today RP is widely used to produce functional prototypes, end-use parts and tooling as well as visual prototypes. When RP is used for end-use parts with interconnected moving assemblies or for producing metal casting molds which must have sufficient material for machining tolerances, accuracy is very critical. We examine the impact of a complex absorbing potential on electron transport both in the continuum and on a lattice. This requires the use of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians; the required formalism is briefly outlined. The lattice formulation allows us to study the interesting problem of an electron interacting with a stationary spin and the subsequent time evolution of the electron and spin properties as the electron is absorbed after the initial interaction. Remarkably, the properties of the localized spin are affected “at a distance” by the interaction of the (now entangled) electron with a complex potential.

Polydiacetylenes (PDAs) exhibit a chromatic response to solvents, temperature, strain and other environmental perturbations. When formed in a solid-state polymerization, the backbone of the polymer is planar and continuous π-overlap is observed. However, when the PDA backbone is distorted by an outside force the extended conjugation is interrupted and an optical shift from blue to red occurs. By exploiting the PDAs properties within polymer systems, smart fibers and films have been created that enhance the original intention of the host. Alpha-phase aluminum oxide thin films were created using an Isoflux ICM-10 dual target inverted cylindrical magnetron sputtering system using mid-frequency AC power supplies. Alpha alumina films were deposited at a magnetron power of 6 kW, 50% oxygen partial pressure by volume, and -35 V DC bias. Film thickness, substrate material, and position and orientation within the deposition chamber were varied. To ensure the deposition conditions are suitable for alloys, the substrate temperature was measured using temperature indicating liquids. The experimental results, supported by Explicit Euler numerical analysis, revealed a steady state temperature of ~480°C at 6kW. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) …

A variety of studies were performed using existing and newly proposed techniques and instrumentation to further the understanding of nondestructive testing of concrete. A new combined stress wave propagation method was developed that combined the existing methods of the spectral analysis of surface waves, impact echo, and free-free resonant column experimental and analysis techniques. The method was used to determine the stiffness profile and location of embedded voids in a concrete tunnel lining modeled as a three layer concrete slab. Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to investigate the dynamic behavior of the slip length in thin polymer films confined between atomically smooth thermal surfaces. For weak wall-fluid interactions, the shear rate dependence of the slip length acquires a distinct local minimum followed by a rapid growth at higher shear rates. With increasing fluid density, the position of the local minimum is shifted to lower shear rates. We found that the ratio of the shear viscosity to the slip length, which defines the friction coefficient at the liquid/solid interface, undergoes a transition from a nearly constant value to the power …

Chlorella vulgaris Buitenzorg cultivation using three bubble column photo bioreactors arranged in series with a volume of 200 mL for 130 hours shows an increase of biomass production of Chlorella vulgaris Buitenzorg up to 1.20 times and a decrease of the ability of CO2 fixation compared to single reactor at a periodic sun illumination cycle. Multi-layer armor containing ceramic and metallic layers has become more common in the past two decades. Typically, ceramics have high compressive strength which combined with their low density make them highly desirable for armor applications. This research effort numerically simulates high velocity impact of cylindrical projectiles on multi-layer metallic and ceramic targets of finite thickness. The creep behavior of an oxide-oxide ceramic matrix composite (CMC) was investigated at 1200°C in laboratory air, in steam and in argon. The composite consisted of a porous alumina-mullite matrix reinforced with laminated, woven mullite/alumina (Nextel/720) fibers. The composite had no fiber coating and relied on its porous alumina/mullite matrix for flaw tolerance. Tensile stress-strain behavior was investigated and the tensile properties were measured at 1200°C in laboratory air. Tensile creep behavior of the CMC was examined for creep stress levels of 73, 91, 114 and 136 MPa. Creep run-out, set to 100 h, was achieved for stress levels ≤ …
