Electrochemical Performance Of Li(1-X)MXFepo4 Cathode Materials Synthesized By Polymer Pyrolysis Route, Ting Li, Jiang-Feng Qian, Yu-Liang Cao, Han-Xi Yang, Xin-Ping Ai

Journal of Electrochemistry

Olivine Li1-xMxFePO4(M=Cr3+, Mg2+, Mn2+, Ni2+) were synthesized by a polyacrylates-pyrolysis route. The structural and electrochemical properties of the as-synthesized cathode materials were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electrochemical charge/discharge cycling. The results indicate that the metallic ions doped at low concentration do not affect the crystalline structure of the material, but considerably improve the rate capability and cycle performance of LiFePO4 at high rate.

Rate-Dependent Slip Boundary Conditions For Simple Fluids, Nikolai V. Priezjev

The dynamic behavior of the slip length in a fluid flow confined between atomically smooth surfaces is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. At weak wall-fluid interactions, the slip length increases nonlinearly with the shear rate provided that the liquid/solid interface forms incommensurable structures. A gradual transition to the linear rate-dependence is observed upon increasing the wall-fluid interaction. We found that the slip length can be well described by a function of a single variable that in turn depends on the in-plane structure factor, contact density and temperature of the first fluid layer near the solid wall. This paper outlines the background of Life-Cycle Inventory/ Life-Cycle Assessment (LCI/LCA) and reviews an undergraduate design project in progress at the University of Missouri - Rolla (UMR) comparing LCI/LCA of steel products with similar products produced from competing materials. GaBi 4 LCI/LCA software is being used to model LCI/LCA with a demonstration of the use of the software for a typical steelmaking operation.1 Future research utilizing the LCI/LCA methodology is being applied to compare the environmental impact of steel products to other alternative engineering materials. This work investigates the order-disorder transformations utilizing time-resolved x-ray diffraction at the Advanced Photon Source. The metastable phases that can form during the order-disorder transformations in the Sm–Co intermetallics have the potential to produce materials with enhanced permanent magnetic properties. The high-temperature experiments transformed the disordered alloys with the TbCu7-type structure obtained by rapid solidification into the mixture of the hexagonal and rhombohedral ordered structures at 1375 K. The Mechanical And Thick Section Bending Behavior Of Friction Stir Processed Aluminum Plate, D. Hilbert, C. Fuller, M. Mahoney, B. London

Materials Engineering

Friction stir processing (FSP) 2519-T87 aluminum plate results in enhanced ductility, 25% strain at fracture. However, the yield strength in the FSP zone drops to 175 MPa from ~400 MPa. Actively cooling the plate during FSP increases the yield strength to 185 MPa and decreases ductility to 20% strain at fracture. Thick bending of a plate of the alloy was demonstrated after the surface was subjected to FSP.

The development of internal threads in a manufactured part is in many cases one of the final operations in the production workflow. Quality issues in thread form development can destroy a part that has previously undergone expensive machining. The issue of tap wear is one of the multi-faceted elements that have a direct correlation on the quality of threaded components. The purpose of this research centers on resultant mechanical pull performance for the stripping of internally threaded geometry in low carbon steel as measured over various increments of the tap cutting life cycle.

Bending stiffness of laminated composite tubes was determined experimentally using four-point bending test. The experimental results were compared with the results obtained by the laminated plate and smear property approaches. The results indicate that experimental values are closer to prediction of the laminated plate approach compared to smear property approach. Effects of tube radius and stacking sequence and fiber orientation of the walled thickness laminate on bending stiffness and strength of composite tubes were studied. • The variation of sulfur dioxide production (throughput) of the baseline design of the Ceramatec sulfuric acid decomposer with total mass flow rate of reacting flow has been calculated. According to the calculations, the sulfur dioxide production increases as the total mass flow rate of reacting flow increases regardless of the fact that decomposition percentage of sulfuric trioxide decreases. A parametric study of the baseline design of the Ceramatec sulfuric acid decomposer was performed.

Several approaches such as self-assembled monolayers and layer-by-layer assembled multilayer films are being used as tools to study the interactions of cells with biomaterials in vitro. In this study, the layer-by-layer assembly approach was used to create monolayer, bilayer, trilayer, five, ten and twenty-bilayer beds of eleven different biomaterials. In this thesis a thorough analysis is presented on the effects of oxidation and oxide etching on the band structure of two dimensional silicon photonic crystals (2 D Si PC's). By using the plane wave expansion method (PWM), two structures of triangular lattice, namely, air cylinders embedded in a silicon background and silicon cylinders embedded in an air background are modeled. Bacterial polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a class of polymers currently receiving much attention because of their potential as renewable and biodegradable plastics. A wide variety of bacteria has been reported to produce PHAs including Pseudomonas strains. These strains are known as versatile medium chain length PHAs (PHAs-mcl) producers using fatty acids as carbon source. Low-density parity-check (LDPC) code is linear-block error-correcting code defined by sparse parity-check matrix. It is decoded using the massage-passing algorithm, and in many cases, capable of outperforming turbo code. This paper presents a class of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes showing good performance with low encoding complexity. The code is constructed using difference families from combinatorial design. The resulting code, which is designed to have short code length and high code rate, can be encoded with low complexity due to its quasi-cyclic structure, and performs well when it is iteratively decoded with the sum-product algorithm. Tunable laser sources in the mid-infrared (MIR) spectral range are required for several Air Force applications. Existing lasers with output in the near-infrared can be converted to more desirable MIR by using nonlinear effects. Orientation patterned gallium arsenide (OPGaAs) is a promising nonlinear conversion material because it has broad transparency and can be engineered for specific pump laser and output wavelengths using quasi-phase matching techniques. The decomposition of cobaltocene and metacarborane (closo-1,7-dicarba-decaborane) under low energy electron irradiation at about 200 K results in a material with the Fermi level closer to the valence band than the material resulting from the decomposition of metacarborane alone. This indicates that cobaltocene provides a relatively p-type dopant as seen in ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy/inverse photoemission spectroscopy. Upon warming to room temperature, however, the Fermi level shifts towards the conduction band, suggesting an n-type dopant. This temperature dependent surface photovoltage effect is not compelling evidence for the majority carrier type but does suggest an increase in the carrier concentration …

Research was accomplished to characterize the electrical and physical characteristic changes of the Thornel® P-100 carbon fiber and five variants when intercalated with 96% sulfuric acid and incorporated the use of Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) structures for testing purposes. The five fiber variants were oxidized in 1 M nitric acid at 0.5 A for 30 seconds, 1 and 2 minutes, the last two samples were detreated at 1150 °C for one hour prior to the nitric acid treatment. Ca1−xSrxCu3Ti4O12 (x=0, 0.1, and 0.2) ceramics were fabricated and their dielectric properties were investigated. It was found that the dielectric constant significantly decreased with the increase of Sr content at low temperature region (<250 K) and remained almost unchanged at high temperature region (>250 K). Three sets of relaxation peaks were observed in electric modulus plots, which were considered to be associated with grains, domain boundaries, and grain boundaries, respectively. Through the analysis of the heights and calculated activation energies of the relaxation peaks, it is strongly believed that the suppressed dielectric constant is related to the change of domain boundaries with Sr doping. ©2007 American Institute of Physics

A MWNTs modified GC electrode was constructed successfully to be used to detect hydrogen peroxide.Two methods of maximum anodic current of cyclic voltommogram and chronoamperometry were adopted to measure the concentration of hydrogen peroxide.The results show that the MWCNTs can enlarge the effective surface area of GC electrode and can enormously enhance the electron transfer.The sensitivity and correlation coefficient for hydrogen peroxide detection are 2.84 μA/mmol·L-1,0.997 and 1.5 μA/mmol·L-1,0.971 for cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry,respectively.The procedure of the two methods to detect hydrogen peroxide is simple,and the results obtained are satisfied.

Influence of electrolyte on the electrocatalytic properties of Pt/GC electrodes for formic acid oxidation were studied by using cyclic voltammetry, SEM and electrochemical in situ FTIR spectroscopy. It has demonstrated that the surfaces of Pt/GC electrodes prepared in H2SO4 (Pt/GC1) or in HClO4(Pt/GC2) are all composed of platinum particles, but which crystals are some differences in size and shape.Diameters of platinum particles on the surface Pt/GC1 are of 100~200 nm, and with spheral shape in the majority. The effect of partial substitution of Ce for La on the structure and the electrochemical properties of the La0.7-xCexMg0.3Ni2.4Co0.6(x=0~0.4)hydrogen storage alloys have been investigated systematically.The result of X-ray powder diffraction(XRD) show that the alloys are all consisted of the LaNi3 phase and the LaNi5 phase.The maximum discharge capacity is decreased gradually with increase of the Ce contents,but the cycling life is improved obviously.
