Novel Electrochemical Method For Synthesis Of Nanostructured Materials Of Noble Metals Based On Poly(N-Vinylpyrrolidone) (Pvp), Wei Pan, Xiao-Kai Zhang, Ming-Hu Huang, Shao-Xin Huang, Xing-Li Feng, Hou-Yi Ma

Journal of Electrochemistry

Gold nanocrystals with controllable size were synthesized through a simple electroreduction method using poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)(PVP) of different polymerization degree as both stabilizer and shape-controller for gold nanoclusters.Individual gold nanoparticles spontaneously assembled into the wire-and ring-shaped nanoparticle aggregates depending on the PVP's dynamic stretching and curling, and precursor nanoparticles grew into flat,single-crystalline nanoprisms with thickness of dozens of nanometers based on the oriented aggregation between particles.Besides,core-shell Au/Ag nanoparticles were conveniently synthesized through two-step electroreduction of noble metal ions in the presence of PVPK30.The electrochemical synthetic method based on PVP provides a new path for preparation of noble metal nanostructured materials with different shape …

Study Of The Electrooxidation Of Glycerol On Oxide And Pd/C Composite Catalysts, Zhi-Yuan Yan, Chang-Wei Xu, Pei-Kang Shen

Journal of Electrochemistry

Oxide and Pd on carbon composite catalysts have been prepared by intermittent microwave heating(IMH) method. The performance of the catalysts for glycerol oxidation in alkaline solution is studied by electrochemical techniques. It is shown that the Pd/C catalyst is active for glycerol electrooxidation. However, the oxide-Pd/C catalysts are even better in terms of the onset potential that is more negative and peak current density. The ratio of oxide to Pd is optimized according to the electrochemical measurement. The results reveal that the addition of oxide into the Pd/C induces the synergistic effect for glycerol electrooxidation.

High Performance Computing resources were introduced by many researchers. This comes in the form of Supercomputers and with operating systems and tools for development such as parallel compiler and its library. However, these resources are expensive for the investation and maintenance, hence people need some alternatives. Many people then introduced parallel distributed computing by using available computing resource such as PCs. Each of these PCs is treated as a processors, hence the cluster of …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Measurements of smoke aerosol humidification factors were performed in a laboratory for different biomass fuel types and burn conditions. Two nephelometers simultaneously measured dry and humidified light scattering coefficients (bsp(dry) and bsp(RH), respectively), providing the first observations of the temporal evolution of the humidification factor (f(RH) = bsp(RH)/bsp(dry)) for fresh (minutes-old) smoke. Hygroscopic characteristics of the smoke aerosols varied with fuel type and fire conditions, with the mean f(RH) ranging from 1.01 to 1.95 for fresh minutes-old smoke for the relative humidity (RH) range of 70-94%. These f(RH) values exhibited temporal variability, with some fuels alternating from hygroscopic to nonhygroscopic …

Microstructural Modification Of As-Cast Al-Si-Mg Alloy By Friction Stir Processing, Z. Y. Ma, S. R. Sharma, Rajiv S. Mishra

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Friction stir processing (FSP) has been applied to cast aluminum alloy A356 plates to enhance the mechanical properties through microstructural refinement and homogenization. the effect of tool geometry and FSP parameters on resultant microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated. the FSP broke up and dispersed the coarse acicular Si particles creating a uniform distribution of Si particles in the aluminum matrix with significant microstructural refinement. Further, FSP healed the casting porosity. These microstructural changes led to a significant improvement in both strength and ductility. Higher tool rotation rate was the most effective parameter to refine coarse Si particles, heal the …

Hydrologic Properties Of Pervious Concrete, Joe D. Luck, Stephen R. Workman, Stephen F. Higgins, Mark S. Coyne

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

Pervious concrete is concrete made by eliminating most or all of the fine aggregate (sand) in the concrete mix, which allows interconnected void spaces to be formed in the hardened product. These interconnected void spaces allow the concrete to transmit water at relatively high rates. The main objective of this project was to conduct research on the potential application of pervious concrete in agricultural settings, specifically for use in animal feed lots, manure storage pads, animal manure and bedding compost facilities, or floor systems in animal buildings. Laboratory tests were conducted on replicated samples of pervious concrete formed from two …

Capillary-Driven Flows Along Rounded Interior Corners, Yongkang Chen, Mark M. Weislogel, Cory L. Nardin Nov 2006

Capillary-Driven Flows Along Rounded Interior Corners, Yongkang Chen, Mark M. Weislogel, Cory L. Nardin

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The problem of low-gravity isothermal capillary flow along interior corners that are rounded is revisited analytically in this work. By careful selection of geometric length scales and through the introduction of a new geometric scaling parameter Tc, the Navier–Stokes equation is reduced to a convenient∼O(1) form for both analytic and numeric solutions for all values of corner half-angle α and corner roundedness ratio λ for perfectly wetting fluids. The scaling and analysis of the problem captures much of the intricate geometric dependence of the viscous resistance and significantly reduces the reliance on numerical data compared with several previous solution methods …

Work In Progress: The Five Basic “Positions” Of Engineering, Blair London, Lisa Deyo

Materials Engineering

Classical ballet technique relies on mastery of the five basic positions of the feet. Every movement in classical ballet goes through one or more of these positions. The positions are practiced in class, used in choreography, and become second nature in performance on stage. Engineering may have a similar context. These engineering “positions” are not just the foundational coursework leading up to an engineering degree such as mathematics, chemistry, or physics. Rather, the positions are aspects of engineering that a practicing engineer routinely does to successfully perform as engineers. The engineering positions discussed are: question, analyze, team, write, and speak. …

Effect Of Friction Stir Processing On The Microstructure Of Cast A356 Aluminum, Z. Y. Ma, S. R. Sharma, Rajiv S. Mishra Oct 2006

Effect Of Friction Stir Processing On The Microstructure Of Cast A356 Aluminum, Z. Y. Ma, S. R. Sharma, Rajiv S. Mishra

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Friction stir processing (FSP) was applied to cast A356 Al to modify the as-cast microstructure. FSP homogenizes and refines the cast microstructure, completely eliminates porosity, and creates a microstructure with fine Si particles (0.25-0.42 μm) distributed in a fine grain aluminum matrix (3-4 μm). Further, FSP parameters significantly influence microstructural development in the processed zone of cast A356 Al. Generally, higher tool rotation rate creates a more homogeneous microstructure. at lower tool rotation rates, a macroscopically visible banded structure characterized by a low density of coarse particles, was detected in the nugget zone. However, FSP parameters did not significantly influence …

A process was developed to modify a vintage 1960's milling machine to allow axial load measurements to be taken and to allow automated control of the plunging stage during the friction stir welding process. The installation of a load cell in the housing of the mill machine was accomplished by way of modifying internal machine parts and introducing new external hardware. Successful post removal inspections and operational checks show that the conversion of a vintage 1960's milling machine to allow axial load measurements is feasible. The automation of the plunge process during friction stir welding was proven feasible by the …
