Effects Of Hydrogen On The Phases And Transition Temperatures Of Niti, Amanda Runciman, Katherine C. Chen, Alan R. Pelton, Christine Trepanier

Materials Engineering

Austenitic (B2) NiTi samples were cathodically charged with various amounts of hydrogen. Trends are tracked based on temperature, time and voltage throughout the process to establish consistent and predictive hydrogen charging procedures. The effect of hydrogen on the austenitic structure and the formation of hydrides are studied with x-ray diffraction (XRD). An increase in the austenite lattice parameter with increased hydrogen content is observed up to a hydrogen solubility limit of approximately 85 wppm. At greater hydrogen concentrations, additional XRD peaks appear, suggesting possible hydride formation. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results show a decrease in both the austenitic and martensitic …

Simulations Of A New Continuous Steelmaking Process, Jorg Annie Peter, Kent D. Peaslee, D. G. C. Robertson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new continuous steelmaking process has been designed in an effort to reduce meltshop costs and increase productivity beyond the possibilities of current EAF-LMF-CC meltshops. This paper discusses possible operational performance based on industrially-verified kinetic, thermodynamic, and heat-transfer models. Dynamic simulations predict variations in steel chemistry and temperature, resulting from steel treatment and upsets. Savings in costs are projected because of increased metallic yield, lower energy requirements, more efficient use of deoxidants and alloys, fewer man-hours per ton, and decreased capital investment.

The Implications Of Academic Dishonesty In Undergraduate Engineering On Professional Ethical Behavior, Donald D. Carpenter, Trevor S. Harding, Cynthia J. Finelli

Materials Engineering

Student academic dishonesty, commonly referred to as cheating, has become a serious problem at institutions of higher education. This is particularly true of engineering students who, according to previous research, are among the most likely to cheat in college. In addition, research on college students in all fields has indicated that such behavior is more common among students who participate in academic dishonesty at the high school level and that it is correlated with other deviant or unethical behaviors, such as petty theft and lying. If, in fact, such correlations do exist, one might hypothesize that there is also a …

The Phase Stability Of Cerium Species In Aqueous Systems Iii. The Ce(Iii/Iv)-H2o-H2o2/O2 System Dimeric Ce(Iv) Species, Pu Yu, Thomas J. O'Keefe

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Equilibria and thermodynamic data for cerium dimer species were calculated for both the Ce-H2O-O2 and Ce-H2O-H2O2 systems. It was found that Ce (IV) has a tendency to form dimers, especially when the total cerium concentration is higher than 0.001 M. There are three major soluble dimer forms considered in this paper: (CeOCe)6+,(CeOCe)(OH)5+, and (CeOCe)(OH)24+, all having very similar standard potentials (E0 Ce(IV)dimer/Ce(III)01.66∀0.02V). When they coexist in solution, the concentration ratio of the Ce (IV) dimer to Ce3+ depends on the total cerium concentrations, the …

Global Challenges As Inspiration: A Classroom Strategy To Foster Social Responsibility, Linda Vanasupa, Lynn Slivovsky, Katherine C. Chen

Materials Engineering

Social responsibility is at the heart of the Engineer’s Creed embodied in the pledge that we will “dedicate [our] professional knowledge and skill to the advancement and betterment of human welfare...[placing] public welfare above all other considerations.” However, half century after the original creed was written, we find ourselves in a world with great technological advances and great global-scale technologically-enabled peril. These issues can be naturally integrated into the engineering curriculum in a way that enhances the development of the technological skill set. We have found that these global challenges create a natural opportunity to foster social responsibility within the …

Nanotechnology, Biology, Ethics And Society: Overcoming The Multidisciplinary Teaching Challenges, Linda Vanasupa, Matthew Ritter, Barbara Schader, Katherine C. Chen, Richard N. Savage, Peter Schwartz, Lynne Slivovsky

Materials Engineering

One of the inherent challenges of teaching any emerging technology like nanotechnology, is the fact that its core competencies flux in the new disciplines' early stages. Nanotechnology presents an additional challenge in that its underpinnings cross multiple traditional disciplinary boundaries. We have designed a course that aims to address some of these challenges through a handful of structural features: team-based learning; a "reverse of the learning pyramid" approach; team-teaching; embedded information literacy techniques; and application-centered content. Our course is organized around four applications that are in their developmental stages: gold nanoshells for cancer treatment; molecular manufacturing; tissue engineering of a …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electronic, structural, and magnetic properties of Mn-doped lanthanum ferrites were studied by neutron diffraction, superconducting quantum interference device, and impedance spectroscopy. Neutron diffraction refinements were performed with the constraint of full La occupancy, which showed the presence of excess oxygen when x < 0.4. Mixed valent Mn cations and cation vacancies, therefore, exist in all the samples. The samples with x > 0.7 are magnetically ordered at room temperature with orthorhombic symmetry (Pbnm). When x < 0.3 the structure is rhombohedral and magnetically disordered above 16 K. The majority carriers, electron holes, correspond to high oxidation states of Mn. The carrier concentration is determined from the Seebeck coefficients, and is a function of temperature and Fe concentration. The measurements of conductivity and Seebeck coefficients show polaron hopping at elevated temperatures.

Modification of Bonding Strength Test of WC HVOF Thermal Spray Coating on Rocket Nozzle. One way to reduce structural weight of RX-100 rocket is by modifying the nozzle material and processing. Nozzle is the main target in weight reduction due to the fact that it contributes 30 % to the total weight of the structur. An alternative for this is by substitution of massive graphite, which is currently used as thermal protector in the nozzle, with thin layer of HVOF (High Velocity Oxy-Fuel) thermal spray layer. This paper presents the characterization of nozzle base material as well as the modification …

Makara Journal of Technology

Design of Induction Motor Drive Without Velocity Sensor Using Current Vector Controller with Full and Reduced Observer Moving to DQ Axis. The observer is used in estimation velocity sensor usually in α-β axis, therefore this situation will need an extra transformation when we want to add compensator because the flux model is in direct and quadrature-axis dq. Every used the transformation to make possible emerge an error. So in this simulation is used a method to estimate the velocity of induction motor drive with observer that is moved to dq-axis. The model of actual motor used is in alfa-beta axis, …

Optical Characterization Of Thick Growth Orientation-Patterned Gallium Arsenide, Joshua W. Meyer

Theses and Dissertations

Tunable laser sources in the mid-infrared (MIR) spectral range are required for several Air Force applications. Existing lasers with output in the near-infrared can be converted to more desirable MIR by using nonlinear effects. Orientation patterned gallium arsenide (OPGaAs) is a promising nonlinear conversion material because it has broad transparency and can be engineered for specific pump laser and output wavelengths using quasi-phase matching techniques. This research examines the optical quality of seven OPGaAs crystal samples and explores the design of an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) device. The Air Force Research Laboratory Electro-Optical Countermeasures Technology Branch obtained the samples from …

Characterization Of Stress In Gan-On-Sapphire Microelectromechanical Systems (Mems) Structures Using Micro-Raman Spectroscopy, Francisco E. Parada

Theses and Dissertations

Micro-Raman (µRaman) spectroscopy is an efficient, non-destructive technique widely used to determine the quality of semiconductor materials and microelectromechanical systems. This work characterizes the stress distribution in wurtzite gallium nitride grown on c-plane sapphire substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. This wide bandgap semiconductor material is being considered by the Air Force Research Laboratory for the fabrication of shock-hardened MEMS accelerometers. µRaman spectroscopy is particularly useful for stress characterization because of its ability to measure the spectral shifts in Raman peaks in a material, and correlate those shifts to stress and strain. The spectral peak shift as a function of stress, …

A test structure was fabricated with a 2-micronmeter MEMS fabrication process. GST material was deposited (by RF sputtering) on the surface of the test structures. The GST was analyzed primarily in the amorphous to crystalline transition states due to more distinct changes in the resistance …

Between Microscopic And Mesoscopic Descriptions Of Twin-Twin Interaction, Peter Müllner Mar 2006

Between Microscopic And Mesoscopic Descriptions Of Twin-Twin Interaction, Peter Müllner

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

On a microscopic scale, deformation twinning is carried by the motion of twinning disconnections. A disconnection is an interfacial line defect characterized by a Burgers vector, a line vector, and a step vector. The Burgers vector (dislocation component of the disconnection) carries the deformation while the step vector (ledge component) carries the transformation from one twin variant to the other. On a mesoscopic scale, the deformation produced by twinning is a simple shear. A moving disclination dipole provides a mesoscopic model accounting for the twinning shear. Twin – twin interaction processes including the intersection of twins, the formation of structured …

Correlations Beyond The Nearest-Neighbor Level In Grain Boundary Networks, C. A. Schuh, M. Frary

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Correlations among 'special' and 'general' grain boundaries are studied on two-dimensional networks, by examining the configurational entropy of boundary structures as well as percolation thresholds. Consideration of crystallographic constraints at various length scales reveals that higher-order constraints play a role in boundary connectivity and network structure. Implications for grain boundary engineering are discussed and directions for future work highlighted.
