Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Interaction parameters for Mn-based alloys were evaluated using both carbon solubility and activity data for species in binary and ternary manganese alloys. The parameters at 1400 °C are the following εcc = -4.5; εccc = 58.8; εFeCC = 1.5; εFeCC = 2.5; In γC0 = -1.15 . εsisi = 15.5; εsisisi = 2.69; εFeSi = 2.5; εcsi = 12.4; εccsi = 27.5; In γSi0 = -7.46 The unified interaction parameter model (UIPM) was used to calculate the activity coefficients of species and the solubility of carbon in ferromanganese alloys (up to quaternary Mn-Fe-C-Si). The results were in good agreement with …

Preparation Of Powder Precursors And Evaporation Of Photoconductive Indium Sulfide Films, Chris Barber, Robert Engelken, Brandon Kemp, Wasim Aleem, Imran Khan, Chris Edrington, Michael Buck, Clayton Workman, Anup Thapa, Tom Jakobs
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
We have demonstrated significant photoconductance in indium sulfide thin films prepared by thermal vacuum evaporation ofIn2$3 powders synthesized in-house by chemical precipitation ofInCl3 or In(CH3COO)3, and (NH4)2S or Na2S. The Delta G lambda/Gdark values have been as high as 0.1 in the initial unoptimized films. Excess sulfur (via a mixture of polysulfide and sulfide ions in the synthesis bath) appears to be important in achieving reproducible and large photoconductivities. In2S3 is particularly attractive as a lower toxicity alternative to CdS in optoelectronic applications such as photovoltaic and photoconductive cells.
The Use Of Solid Waste Materials As Alternative Compositions In The Development Of Wood/Cement Blocks, Haig Mamas Vahradian
The Use Of Solid Waste Materials As Alternative Compositions In The Development Of Wood/Cement Blocks, Haig Mamas Vahradian
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
As the population of the planet Earth increases, the need for affordable housing becomes a paramount issue in construction. This need is further complicated by the rising cost of basic building materials due to the depletion of natural resources throughout the world. These problems have caused the construction industry to refocus its attention on the elimination of waste through a comprehensive strategy to: (a) reclaim and recycle these resources into usable materials, and (b) develop products and markets in construction for recycled materials through research and testing to prove their integrity.
The purpose of this study is to determine the …

Optical And Electrical Properties Of Cualse² Thin Films Obtained By Selenization Of Cu/Al/Cu... Al/Cu Layers Sequentially Deposited, J. C. Bernède, S. Marsillac, C. El Moctar, A. Conan
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Optical and electrical properties of CuAlSe2 thin films obtained by selenization of Cu/Al/Cu...Al/Cu layers sequentially deposited have been investigated. It is shown that the expected energy gap (2.67 eV) is measured for well crystallized films, whereas a slightly higher value is measured for films not so well crystallized. Raman diffusion also shows differences between well and poorly crystallized films with peaks corresponding to the reference powder for the former samples. A p-type conductivity is found whatever the crystalline quality of the samples. The conductivity of the films depends also strongly on their crystalline properties. When the films are badly …

CuAlSe2 thin films have been synthesized by chalcogenization of thin Cu and Al layers sequentially deposited by evaporation under vacuum. It is shown that CuAlSe2 films are obtained with some Cu2-δSe and Se phases present at the surface. These surface phases are suppressed by annealing under vacuum and by chemical etching in a KCN solution. At the end of the process, the XRD spectrum demonstrates that textured CuAlSe2 films have been obtained with preferential orientation of the crystallites along the (112) direction. The gap of the films is 2.7 eV as expected. The …
Characterization Of Iron Oxides And Atmospheric Corrosion Of Steel, Sei Jin Oh
Characterization Of Iron Oxides And Atmospheric Corrosion Of Steel, Sei Jin Oh
Physics Theses & Dissertations
The study of corrosion behavior was performed using three different analytical techniques, which provided information on the formation, development and layering of iron oxides on the corrosion products as a function of atmospheric conditions, exposure time and type of steel. In particular, the protective layer formed on weathering steel was investigated as a function of different amounts of alloying elements in the steel, atmospheric conditions and exposure times. Combined together, the results provided a better understanding of the atmospheric corrosion behavior of steel, and formed a part of database of the atmospheric corrosion characteristics.
Accurate characterization of the iron oxides …
Mechanical And Tribological Properties Of Composites Of Recycled High Density Polyethylene And Recycled Rubber, Jason G. Boulanger
Mechanical And Tribological Properties Of Composites Of Recycled High Density Polyethylene And Recycled Rubber, Jason G. Boulanger
Masters Theses
This thesis presents a study on the mechanical and tribological properties of composite materials of recycled high density polyethylene (HDPE) and recycled rubber tire particles. The materials were compounded by extrusion and formed into test specimens by injection molding.
The first experiment studied the effect of recycled rubber percentage on mechanical properties of composites of recycled HDPE and recycled rubber. The mechanical properties included tensile strength, percent elongation, hardness, and impact resistance. Recycled rubber concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 percent were tested. The second experiment investigated the tribological properties of recycled HDPE and recycled rubber …
An Investigation On The Effect Of Aging And Fatigue Damage On The Mechanical Properties Of A Graphite/Bismaleimide Composite, William M. Johnston Jr.
An Investigation On The Effect Of Aging And Fatigue Damage On The Mechanical Properties Of A Graphite/Bismaleimide Composite, William M. Johnston Jr.
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This investigation utilizes the open hole tension (OHT) specimen loaded in tension-tension fatigue under isothermal, fixed frequency conditions. A range of load levels and temperature levels where chosen to assess performance. These loads and temperatures ranged from relatively benign conditions (low stress, room temperature) up through aggressive conditions (high stress, high temperature). Measurements of stiffness, damage accumulation, residual strength, weight loss, and glass transition temperature (Tg) were made. Results from this work will help explain the roles of aging, load and fatigue in the performance of elevated temperature OHT specimens as well as provide insights to the individual and synergistic …
Investigation Of The Optical Properties Of Ordered Semiconductor Materials, Jack E. Mccrae Jr.
Investigation Of The Optical Properties Of Ordered Semiconductor Materials, Jack E. Mccrae Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Optical studies have been conducted upon CdGeAs2 and ZnGeP2, two of the most promising semiconductors being developed for mid-infrared non-linear optics applications. These experiments included photoluminescence (PL) studies of both compounds as well as photoreflectance (PR) measurements upon CdGeAs2. In addition, Hall effect measurements were carried out upon CdGeAs2, to aid in interpretation of the optical data. PL was measured as a function of laser power, sample temperature, and crystal orientation for CdGeAs2. One broad weak peak near 0.38 eV, and another somewhat narrower and often far brighter peak near 0.57 …
