Elevated Temperature Microstructure Stability Of Slm 304l Stainless Steel, Tarak Amine, Joseph William Newkirk

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

With time at temperature, changes in metallurgical structure can be expected for almost any steel or alloy. In stainless steels, the changes can be grain growth, carbide precipitation, ferrite decomposition, or embrittlement. These phenomena can significantly effect the properties of the steel and would potentially change the functionality of the component. Therefore, to determine component stability, the elevated temperature microstructure stability of additive manufacturing materials was studied. This work investigates the influence of different aging times of additive material stainless steels (304L) fabricated with the Selective Laser Melting (SLM) process on microstructure and mechanical properties. Microstructure and mechanical properties were …

Transient temperature history is vital in direct laser deposition (DLD) because it reveals the cooling rate at specific temperatures, which directly relates to phase transformation and types of microstructure formed in deposit. FEA simulation was employed to study the transient temperature history and cooling rate at different experimental setups in Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb DLD process. In this paper, an innovative model was described, which combines a moving Gaussian distribution heat source and element birth and death technology in ANSYS, help to analysis cooling rate control method and guide crack-free deposits build process.

Stability Of The M2 Phase Of Vanadium Dioxide Induced By Coherent Epitaxial Strain, N. F. Quackenbush, Yijia Gu, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Tensile strain along the cR axis in epitaxial VO2 films raises the temperature of the metal insulator transition and is expected to stabilize the intermediate monoclinic M2 phase. We employ surface-sensitive x-ray spectroscopy to distinguish from the TiO2 substrate and identify the phases of VO2 as a function of temperature in epitaxial VO2/TiO2 thin films with well-defined biaxial strain. Although qualitatively similar to our Landau-Ginzburg theory predicted phase diagrams, the M2 phase is stabilized by nearly an order of magnitude more strain than expected for the measured temperature window. Our results reveal that the …

A Dissolution-Precipitation Mechanism Is At The Origin Of Concrete Creep In Moist Environments, Isabella Pignatelli, Aditya Kumar, R. Alizadeh, Yann Le Pape, Mathieu Bauchy, Gaurav Sant

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Long-term creep (i.e., deformation under sustained load) is a significant material response that needs to be accounted for in concrete structural design. However, the nature and origin of concrete creep remain poorly understood and controversial. Here, we propose that concrete creep at relative humidity ≥ 50%, but fixed moisture content (i.e., basic creep), arises from a dissolution-precipitation mechanism, active at nanoscale grain contacts, as has been extensively observed in a geological context, e.g., when rocks are exposed to sustained loads, in liquid-bearing environments. Based on micro-indentation and vertical scanning interferometry data and molecular dynamics simulations carried out on calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H), …

Management Of A Sever Degloving Foot Injury: A Rare Presentation Of Food Injury In Emergency Department, Ugur Lok, Hasan Buyukaslan, Umut Gulacti, Fatih Dogan, Irfan Aydin

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Occupational crash injuries of the foot present a significant reconstructive challenge due to the superficial location of structures such as tendon, joint and neurovascular network essential for proper acceptance of weight bearing and shear forces associated with bipedal gait. We discussed here a rare case in which an extensive degloving injury of the foot and combined with knee traumatic dislocation and proximal fibula tip fracture that underwent amputation. The authors suggested that none of treatment modalities of degloving are entirely satisfactory, so that each case must be considered independently with cons and pros

The Anisotropy Of Hexagonal Close-Packed And Liquid Interface Free Energy Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations Based On Modified Embedded-Atom Method, Ebrahim Asadi, Mohsen Asle Zaeem

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work aims to comprehensively study the anisotropy of the hexagonal close-packed (HCP)-liquid interface free energy using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on the modified-embedded atom method (MEAM). As a case study, all the simulations are performed for Magnesium (Mg). The solid-liquid coexisting approach is used to accurately calculate the melting point and melting properties. Then, the capillary fluctuation method (CFM) is used to determine the HCP-liquid interface free energy (γ) and anisotropy parameters. In CFM, a continuous order parameter is employed to accurately locate the HCP-liquid interface location, and the HCP symmetry-adapted spherical harmonics are used to expand γ …

Coupled Crystal Orientation-Size Effects On The Strength Of Nano Crystals, Rui Yuan, Irene J. Beyerlein, Caizhi Zhou Jan 2016

Coupled Crystal Orientation-Size Effects On The Strength Of Nano Crystals, Rui Yuan, Irene J. Beyerlein, Caizhi Zhou

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the combined effects of grain size and texture on the strength of nanocrystalline copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) using a crystal-plasticity based mechanics model. Within the model, slip occurs in discrete slip events exclusively by individual dislocations emitted statistically from the grain boundaries. We show that a Hall-Petch relationship emerges in both initially texture and non-textured materials and our values are in agreement with experimental measurements from numerous studies. We find that the Hall-Petch slope increases with texture strength, indicating that preferred orientations intensify the enhancements in strength that accompany grain size reductions. These findings reveal that texture …

Refractive Index And Thermo-Optic Coefficients Of Ge-As-Se Chalcogenide Glasses, Benn Gleason, Kathleen Richardson, Laura Sisken, Charmayne Smith (Lonergan)

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Seventeen glasses in the Ge-As-Se ternary glass-forming region have been fabricated and analyzed to provide input for optical design data and to establish composition- and structure-based relationships to aide development of novel chalcogenide glasses with tailored optical functionality. While known that Ge addition to binary As-Se glasses enhances the mean coordination number (MCN) of the network and results in increased Tg and decreased CTE, this work highlights the impact on optical properties, specifically mid-wave (λ = 4.515 μm) index and thermo-optic coefficient (dn/dT). Trends in property changes were correlated with an excess or deficiency of chalcogen content in the glassy …

The therapeutic potential of RNA interference (RNAi) has been limited by inefficient delivery of short interfering RNA (siRNA). Tumor-specific recognition can be effectively achieved by antibodies directed against highly expressed cancer cell surface receptors. We investigated the utility of linking an internalizing streptavidinconjugated HER2 antibody to an endosome-disruptive biotinylated polymeric nanocarrier to improve the functional cytoplasmic delivery of siRNA in breast and ovarian cancer cells in vitro and in an intraperitoneal ovarian cancer xenograft model in vivo, yielding an 80% reduction of target mRNA and protein levels with sustained repression for at least 96 hours. RNAi-mediated site specific cleavage …

Direct Experimental Evidence For Differing Reactivity Alterations Of Minerals Following Irradiation: The Case Of Calcite And Quartz, Isabella Pignatelli, Aditya Kumar, Kevin G. Field, Bu Wang, Yingtian Yu, Yann Le Pape, Mathieu Bauchy, Gaurav Sant

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Concrete, used in the construction of nuclear power plants (NPPs), may be exposed to radiation emanating from the reactor core. Until recently, concrete has been assumed immune to radiation exposure. Direct evidence acquired on Ar+-ion irradiated calcite and quartz indicates, on the contrary, that, such minerals, which constitute aggregates in concrete, may be significantly altered by irradiation. More specifically, while quartz undergoes disordering of its atomic structure resulting in a near complete lack of periodicity, calcite only experiences random rotations, and distortions of its carbonate groups. As a result, irradiated quartz shows a reduction in density of around …

Structure And Corrosion Behavior Of Sputter Deposited Ce-Al-O Coating On Al 2024-T3 Alloy Substrates, Yuanyuan Liu, Jiamu Huang, James B. Claypool, Matthew J. O'Keefe

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Deposition of Ce-Al-O coatings on Al 2024-T3 alloy substrates was conducted by magnetron co-sputtering of CeO2 and Al targets. The incorporation of Al into the CeO2 film resulted in an amorphous or nanocrystalline structure with binding energy states different from Al, Al2O3, and CeO2. Electrochemical measurements indicated that the amorphous or nanocrystalline Ce-Al-O coating increased the corrosion resistance of bare Al 2024-T3 substrates by more than three orders of magnitude and exhibited a very different cathodic and anodic protective mechanism compared to Al and CeO2 coated and as-polished Al 2024-T3 samples. …

Evolution Of The Statistical Distribution In A Topological Defect Network, Fei Xue, Xueyun Wang, Ion Socolenco, Yijia Gu, Longqing Chen, Sang-Wook Cheong

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The complex networks of numerous topological defects in hexagonal manganites are highly relevant to vastly different phenomena from the birth of our cosmos to superfluidity transition. The topological defects in hexagonal manganites form two types of domain networks: type-I without and type-II with electric self-poling. A combined phase-field simulations and experimental study shows that the frequencies of domains with N-sides, i.e. of N-gons, in a type-I network are fitted by a lognormal distribution, whereas those in type-II display a scale-free power-law distribution with exponent ~ 2. A preferential attachment process that N-gons with a larger N have higher probability of …

High-Frequency Electromagnetic Purification Of Silicon, Lucas Nana Wiredu Damoah, Lifeng Zhang Sep 2015

High-Frequency Electromagnetic Purification Of Silicon, Lucas Nana Wiredu Damoah, Lifeng Zhang

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effect of a high-frequency electromagnetic (EM) field on the removal of nonmetallic inclusions from molten silicon was experimentally investigated. Inclusion separation efficiencies of up to 99 pct were reached. The separation efficiency was independent of the particle concentration in the melt and increased significantly with increases in the frequency, separation time, and coil current. Particles were separated from the silicon matrix and relocated to the top, bottom, and side walls of the crucible due to the effect of three mechanisms: induced secondary fluid flow which carried particles from the bulk of the melt; EM body force which worked in …

A Microstructure And Hardness Study Of Functionally Graded Materials Ti6al4v/Tic By Laser Metal Deposition, Jingwei Zhang, Yunlu Zhang, Frank W. Liou, Joseph William Newkirk, Karen M. Brown Taminger, William J. Seufzer

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Crack free functionally graded material (FGM) Ti6Al4V-TiC has been fabricated by laser metal deposition (LMD) using TiC and Ti6Al4V powder which were premixed for different ratios. This study focuses on the influence of laser processing parameters and TiC compositional distribution on microstructure, Vickers hardness and phase. The microstructure is analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and hardness tests. Primary carbide, eutectic carbide and unmelted carbide are found in the deposit area. When laser power increased, the primary and secondary dendrite arm spacing increased. The laser power and scanning speed did not influence the Vickers hardness distribution significantly.

Burner, Emitter, And Recuperator Development For Lightweight Thermophotovoltaic Power Supply, Lewis Fraas, Leonid Minkin, J. Avery, Hui She, L. Ferguson, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Like batteries, thermophotovoltaic generators produce DC electricity quietly. TPV uses infrared photovoltaic cells to convert infrared radiation from a combustion heated ceramic IR emitter. However, because the specific energy in a hydrocarbon fuel like propane or butane is 12,900 Wh/kg, much larger than the specific energy of 145 Wh/kg for a Li-ion battery, TPV is very promising as a lightweight DC power supply. A portable cylindrical thermophotovoltaic (TPV) battery replacement concept has been previously described. It consists of a cylindrical TPV receiver assembly using simple diffused junction GaSb IR cells along with a novel omega recuperator and a novel doped …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multicomponent TeO2-Bi2O3-ZnO (TBZ) glass thin films were prepared using RF magnetron sputtering under different oxygen flow rates. The influences of oxygen flow rate on the structural and optical properties of the resulting thin films were investigated. We observed that thin films sputtered in an oxygen-rich environment are optically transparent while those sputtered in an oxygen-deficient environment exhibit broadband absorption. The structural origin of the optical property variation was studied using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy which revealed that the presence of under-coordinated Te leads to the observed optical …

Electrolytic Recovery Of Bismuth And Copper As A Powder From Acidic Sulfate Effluents Using An Emew® Cell, Wei Jin, Paul I. Laforest, Alex Luyima, Weldon Read, Luis M. Navarro, Michael S. Moats

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Effective removal of bismuth is a primary concern during copper electrorefining. A novel electrowinning process using an emew® cell was developed to recover bismuth and copper from a copper electrorefining waste stream. Significant removal and co-deposition of copper and bismuth were achieved from a highly acidic sulfate industrial effluent using a current density of 350 A m-2, but the current efficiency was low (27%). Operating at a lower current density (75 A m-2) facilitated the preferred removal of Cu, while increasing current efficiency to 67.4% due to the decrease of aside-reaction. Consequently, a two-stage process was …

Origin Of Interfacial Polar Order In Incipient Ferroelectrics, Yijia Gu, Nan Wang, Fei Xue, Long-Qing Chen

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

There are ample experimental evidences indicating that the ferroelastic domain walls of incipient ferroelectrics, such as SrTiO3 and CaTiO3, are polar. The emergence of such interfacial polar order at a domain wall is exciting and believed to arise from the coupling between a primary order parameter, such as a strain or an antiferrodistortive (AFD) order parameter, and polarization. There have been several mechanisms proposed to explain the emergence of interfacial polar order, including biquadratic coupling, AFD-antiferroelectric coupling, and flexoelectric coupling. Using CaTiO3 as an example, we demonstrate, using both asymptotic analytics and numerical calculation, that the …

There is a typo of the space group. All the Pnmb should be Pbnm (or Pnma). So the Glazer notation should be changed to (a-a-c+) for Pbnm space group on page 4 of the article. We have also noticed that the thermodynamic analysis of CaTiO3 thin film is not correct. The films are (001)PC-oriented or (101)-oriented. Therefore, there is no need to rotate the coordinate system (on page 4 of the article). By applying the thin film boundary condition, i.e., ε11 = ε22 = εs, ε …
