"The feasibility of studying ionic motion in glass using thermally stimulated polarization (TSPC)/depolarization current (TSDC) techniques was investigated with 4Na₂O·96SiO₂ and 30PbO·70SiO₂ (mol%) glasses. The TSDC peaks in these glasses were dependent on glass composition and attributed to bulk polarization. The high temperature background TSPC is shown to be due to dc conductivity, whereas the TSPC/TSDC peaks in the 4Na₂O glass are attributed to shorter range Na+ motion.
The electrical conductivity of glasses determined by TSPC agrees well with that measured by conventional ac or dc techniques. The TSPC technique is a rapid and easy method of measuring the …

“The effects of germanium, antimony, arsenic, cobalt, glue, and free acid concentration were studied on both commercial and synthetic electrolytes. The effects of a single factor and the combined effects of multiple factors were elucidated. The temperature, zinc concentration, and current density were also varied. It was found that the acid concentration was the most critical factor when impurity levels were at normal plant solution concentrations. The ranges where the effect of the impurity became apparent were: greater than 20 ppb for antimony; 40 ppb for germanium; 120 ppb for arsenic; and 7-8 mg/l for cobalt for a solution containing …

"The stability of BaTiO3-type insulators to DC fields has long been recognized as one of the important factors in determining the quality of a capacitor which uses such a material as its dielectric. "An experimental electron impact ionization source was used to determine the presence of various neutral atoms and molecules on metallized and bare surfaces of silicon wafers. The metallization consisted of thin films of nicke l and gold separately and in combination. The major surface contaminates on all samples were found to be F, Na, Cl, K, CO, and CO2. The surface concentration of these species was found to be sensitive to the sample temperature up to 550 °C, the maximum temperature used in this study.

"A study was undertaken to determine the feasibility of using voltammetry and scanning electron microscopy techniques to characterize copper deposition from an acid-sulfate electrolyte. The main process variables investigated were temperature and addition agents (chloride ion, glue, separan or thiourea) at different concentrations, over a range of current densities. Cathodes employed were either polycrystalline titanium or copper. Some long-time copper deposits were also made using Ti cathodes and the orientations of these deposits were determined by x-ray diffraction.

"The corrosion of In-Bi alloys was studied using X-ray, scanning electron microscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry techniques.
Calculated activation energy values indicated that the corrosion of In-Bi alloys was activation controlled. The effect of amine mixtures on the corrosion of In and In2Bi (ß1 phase) was studied. Morphological studies revealed that the porosity of the resulting physical surface structure was influential in determining the corrosion rate. In deaerated 3N HCl solutions, the selective dissolution of indium was the predominant mechanism in the corrosion of In-Bi alloys. The corrosion was always accompanied by a phase change …

"Thermal expansion and transformations of K2SO4, K2CrO4, K2MoO4, and K2WO4 were studied by high temperature diffractometry, differential thermal analysis, and dilatometry. K2SO4 and K2CrO4 transform from an orthorhombic to a hexagonal structure at 580°C and 670°C respectively, with initiation of the transformation probably related to increased amplitude of S-O tetrahedral vibrations. "Thermal expansion and phase transformations in CaF2, BaF2, SrCl2, and BaCl2 were studied by high temperature x-ray diffractometry, differential thermal analysis, and thermodilatometric analysis. Thermal expansion characteristics of CaF2, BaF2 and SrCl2 are very similar. The structures expand normally at lower temperatures and depart substantially from linearity at higher temperatures, because of formation of defects and disordering of anions. At high temperatures CaF2 and BaF2 react with water vapor, even at low humidities, forming oxides and emitting HF, leading to difficulty in observation of phase transformations. SrCl …

"A study of the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of boron from boron triiodide (BI3) on molybdenum has been done with field emission microscopy (FEM) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED).
A correlation of the efficiency by which BI3 is effectively dissociated to form adsorbed boron, and the temperature of the substrate has been shown through work function measurements on the boron covered molybdenum field emitter surfaces. The boron-induced work function change of molybdenum has been shown to be in agreement with a theoretical model which predicts positive, as well as negative work functions for adsorbate-substrate systems. "The premartensitic temperature dependence of ultrasonic wave propagation in Fe-30 pct Ni polycrystals and Fe-32 pct Ni single crystals was measured by using a continuous wave technique. As the temperature was lowered to within 10°C of the Ms, a nonlinear decrease of the relative shear velocity was observed. This effect is related to dislocation stacking fault instabilities which may trigger the martensitic phase transformation. In addition, the single crystals show a frequency dependence of the shear elastic constant C' well above the Ms. The dispersion is believed to be caused by fluctuations in the anisotropic molecular …

"An ultrasonic investigation shows that the prebainitic kinetics of AISI 86B80 and 0.8C-5.3Ni steels follow t2/3 and or t1 time laws in the lower bainite temperature region. The data analysis indicates that these kinetics signal carbon segregation to dislocations. The simple time laws are interrupted at the bainite start time. It is shown that at this time the carbon depleted regions around dislocations transform martensitically. The lower bainite reaction is thus initiated by the formation of supersaturated ferrite through carbon segregation and the subsequent local martensitic transformation"--Abstract, page iii.

"The morphology of cellular precipitation in Al-29.8wt%Ag alloy has been investigated in bulk specimens by transmission electron microscopy and in solution treated specimens by means of hot stage microscopy. Both cellular and general precipitation were observed to occur simultaneously in quench-aged and isothermally aged alloys. By studying the early stages of precipitation in the hot stage, the mechanism for the growth of cells in Al-Ag alloys was developed. According to this mechanism, the grain boundary allotriomorphs begin to form, the boundary then interacts with the allotriomorphs by bowing, and then either trailing precipitation forms on the allotriomorphs or new lamellae …

"The diffusion of ¹³¹I in single crystals and along the tilt grain boundaries of pure and calcium chloride doped (142±5 ppm) bicrystals of sodium chloride, grown by Czochralski technique, was investigated using a microtome sectioning technique. Results on bulk diffusion in pure NaCl agree well with the results of earlier investigators and are represented by the D=(504 cm²/sec)exp (-2.27 ev/kT). Enhanced diffusion of ¹³¹I is observed along the grain boundaries and the presence of the dopant lowers the grain boundary diffusivity over the entire temperature range of 430ºC - 570ºC studied in the present investigation. "The formation sequence of (Cd,Mn,Fe) (Mn,Fe)₂O₄ from the individual oxides,x CdO + (1-x) MnCO₃ + α-Fe₂O₃,was found by X-Ray diffraction. Cd(Mn,Fe)₂O₄ was formed completely from CdO·Fe₂O₃ and CdO·Fe₂O₄ at 900°C and reacted with MnFe₂O₄ for 0 < x < 0.5 and with α-Fe₂O₃ for 0.5 < x < 1.0 to form a single phase of (Cd,Mn,Fe) (Mn,Fe)₂O₄ at 1150°C. This is the first time that the details involved in the formation sequence of CdMn-ferrite have been shown. A mixture of 0.5 CdO + 0.5 MnCO₃ + α-Fe₂O₃ was calcined at 900°C for 2 hrs forming Cd(Mn,Fe)₂O₄ with no Cd present in the other phases. Sintering was accomplished at 1150°C for 30 minutes forming a single phase of Cd₀.₅Mn₀.₅Fe₂O₄ with a bulk sintered density of 98-99% of the X-Ray density. The rate of changing density followed the relationship, p = K ln t + c, at temperatures between 1050°C and 1300°C. Magnetic properties of CdₓMn₁₋ₓFe₂O₄ were affected by composition x. A relationship, B = gx + h, was found between maximum magnetic flux density B and composition x at room temperature for 0 <̲ x <̲ 0.3. This was rationalized by a modification of Néel's theory. The maximum magnetic flux density decreased with increasing cadmium concentration for 0.3 < x <̲ 0.5. This decrease was attributed to the changing direction of the magnetic moment in the octahedral site sub-lattice according to the superexchange theory. No magnetic properties were observed due to the formation of a compensated antiferromagnetic phase for 0.5 < x <̲ 1.0. Maximum magnetic flux density increased with bulk density, while the coercive force decreased with the grain growth and the initial permeability increased with the bulk density and grain size. A stator core used for a-c electric motor application was formed by pre-sintering at 900⁰C for 2 hrs. Slots were then sawed with a tungsten carbide blade and final sintering was accomplished at 1150⁰C for 1 hr"--Abstract, pages iii-iv.

"The cracking of low alloy Cr-Mo-V steels under cyclic stress at 1000-1100°C. was studied using a specially designed test apparatus. The results obtained from specimens plated with hard chromium are compared to those of unplated specimens. Tests conducted in gas mixtures of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide showed that a high CO/CO2 ratio retards cracking in both plated and unplated specimens. Both external and internal oxidation are used to explain these results. Inherent microcracks in the hard chromium plating promoted cracking in all CO/CO2 environments. "Relative intensity measurements of X-ray powder diffraction lines were made of compositions in the region ZrTe₀.₅ to ZrTe₂.₀, fired between 600º and 817ºC in evacuated sealed tubes. The experimental relative intensities of samples between ZrTe and ZrTe₂ were compared with values calculated for several theoretical models with different Zr vacancy ordering schemes and Te vacancy concentrations. The most probable structural model for compositions in the range ZrTe to ZrTe₁.₅ is one in which the number of Zr vacancies located at z = 0 ranges from 0% to 30%, with the concentration of Te vacancies ranging from 0 to 35%. Individual additions of the impurities Al, Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ge, Mn, Ni, Sb, Sn, Ti, PbO₂ , PbSO₄, and HCl were studied. "Clear glasses form in the system Ag₂O-B₂O₃ up to about 35 mol.% (65 wt.%) Ag₂O. Infrared absorption, thermal expansion and density data indicated an analogy to the Na₂O-B₂O₃ system. Pentaborate-triborate group pairs appear to be formed upon the addition of Ag₂O to B₂O₃ up to 20 mol.% Ag₂O and diborate groups from 20 to 33 mol.% Ag₂O. This interpretation is supported by the comparison of the infrared absorption spectra of quenched and crystallized glasses. One crystallization product ,Ag₂O.4B₂O₃, has been identified previously. Both cellular and general precipitation were observed to occur simultaneously in quenched and aged alloys while only cellular precipitation was observed to occur in isothermally aged alloys. "The disaccommodation technique was used to determine the activation volume of carbon diffusion, ΔV, in six fcc iron-nickel alloys. Measurements were made at temperatures ranging from 68ºC to 90ºC and pressures up to six kilobars on samples having a nickel content between 31 and 63 at. %. A maximum activation volume of 3.9 cm³/mole was found at 34 at. % nickel. The compositional dependence of ΔV is satisfactorily reproduced by a magnetic energy continuum model in which it is assumed that the activation free energy of diffusion is essentially ferromagnetic in origin "--Abstract, page iii.

"The age hardening processes in Mg-3.5 wt.% Th-1.0 wt.% Mn and Mg-1.0 wt.% Th-1.0 wt.% Mn alloys have been studied by light and electron microscopy, and by electron and X-ray diffraction. At aging temperatures of 300ºC and below, G.P. zone formation rapidly hardens these alloys followed by the precipitation of disc shaped plates during averaging. During aging above 300ºC, no G.P. zones form and the disc shaped precipitate grows to very large sizes. The combined results of X-ray and electron diffraction indicate that the disc shaped precipitate has a Mg₃Cd (DO₁₉) type structure. The basal plane of the Mg₃Th discs …

"Li₂O•Al₂O₂•2SiO₂ glass fibers were ion-exchanged from 1 to 300 minutes in a sodium nitrate bath at 366ºC. The internal friction was measured along with the lithium and sodium concentration profiles. As sodium progressively replaced lithium, the alkali internal friction peak became smaller while a new peak (mixed alkali peak) appeared and increased in magnitude. These changes in the internal friction are similar to those that occur upon the addition of a second alkali to glasses prepared by conventional melting. "A model developed to predict adsorbate-induced work-function changes for thermionic emitters is shown here to apply to a more general class of electron emission phenomena and a much broader range of adsorbates. This model predicts that chemically, vapor-deposited boron will increase the work function of a clean tungsten substrate at coverages between 0 and 1 monolayer. "Neutron diffraction and x-ray powder studies have been made of holmium-iron intermetallic compounds. The magnetic moments of Ho and Fe are in good agreement with measured spontaneous magnetization assuming a ferrimagnetic model with the Ho moments antiparallel to the Fe moments. The magnetic moments of the Fe atoms are found to be localized and thus independent of the rare earth content in the alloys. In contrast to HoCo₃, (00ℓ) type magnetic peaks in the neutron diffraction patterns are still prevalent at room temperature and gradually decrease as the Curie temperature is approached. "Glasses of various compositions in the Na₂O-SiO₂ system were prepared with different levels of OH concentration. Phase separation kinetics, thermal expansion, radiation induced optical absorption, and internal friction of these glasses were studied. The increase in OH content in these glasses was found to (a) enhance the rate of phase separation; (b) increase thermal expansion above the glass temperature and change the dilatometric softening temperature in a way that depends on microstructure; (c) increase the radiation induced optical absorption bands associated with positive hole centers and decrease those associated with electron trap centers; and, (d) decrease the low temperature alkali …

"The distribution of relaxation times for the alkali peak in a Li₂ O·A1₂O₃ ·2.0SiO₂ glass and for the mixed alkali peak in a 0.5Li₂O·0.5Na₂O·A1₂O₃·2.OSiO₂ glass was studied using the internal friction technique. A lognormal distribution of relaxation times provided the best agreement with the experimental data. The ß parameter of the lognormal distribution function, which is related to the half-height peak width, varied with temperature, indicating that the distribution of relaxation times is dependent upon the activation energy and the activation entropy of the relaxation mechanism. "The effects of temperatures from 0°C to 50°C and current densities from 10 asf to 200 asf on the current efficiency in the electrolysis of pure zinc sulfate solutions (65 gpl Zn⁺⁺ - 200 gpl H₂SO₄) were determined. Pure platinum and platinum coated titanium anodes were used with an aluminum cathode. Platinum anodes were not inert at certain combinations of temperature and current density, and platinum acted as a low overvoltage impurity causing resolution of the cathode deposit. Orientation of the zinc deposits was found to vary with temperature and to have a distinct relationship to current efficiency. Preconditioning of …
