Study Of Electron Energy Filtering For Cold Electron Transport At Room Temperature, Pushkar Kiran Gothe
Study Of Electron Energy Filtering For Cold Electron Transport At Room Temperature, Pushkar Kiran Gothe
Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
The Fermi-Dirac thermal excitation of electrons at room temperature has been a significant limitation to many technologically important phenomena such as single electron transport. The electron thermal excitation also degrades the performance of modern electronic devices as well as spintronic devices. The scaling of metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) is hindered due to the thermal excitation of electrons at room temperature. Suppression of the thermally excited electrons at room temperature would therefore enable further scaling of the transistors, and in turn, improve the performance of electronic devices. This study demonstrates the suppression of electron thermal excitation at room temperature without using …

In the recent times, industry's production speed has been increasing and thus, the production of parts needs to adapt and so do the materials used to manufacture them. Hence, tools exposed to more extreme conditions using hard coatings need them to be more reliable. In this work an improvement of the toughness of TiN/Ni coatings is achieved through the combination of different microstructures at different levels. This first part consisted on finding the optimum TiN/Ni composition by using a high throughput methodology for a faster analysis and the second on the combination of that composition with a multilayer structure to …

Simulation Of Li Dendrite Inhibition In Lithium Battery By Phase-Field Method, Yao Ren
Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Lithium (Li) dendrite growth poses serious challenges for the development of Li metal batteries which also stops the footsteps of human utilizing the environment-friendly new power source. Replacing liquid electrolyte with solid electrolyte can not only inhibit the dendrite growth by mechanical suppression, but also introduce more possibilities to the electrochemistry of battery. However, the underlying mechanism is still not fully understood, and most theoretical works focus on pure liquid electrolyte, ignoring the mechanical strain effects. Here we developed a phase-field model which simulates the Li dendrite growth to study the competition between diffusion and deposition rates, the pure elastic …

The principal objective of this study is to employ non-destructive broadband dielectric spectroscopy/impedance spectroscopy and machine learning techniques to estimate the moisture content in FRP composites under hygrothermal aging. Here, classification and regression machine learning models that can accurately predict the current moisture saturation state are developed using the frequency domain dielectric response of the composite, in conjunction with the time domain hygrothermal aging effect. First, to categorize the composites based on the present state of the absorbed moisture supervised classification learning models (i.e., quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA), support vector machine (SVM), and artificial neural network-based multilayer perceptron (MLP) classifier) …

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are being used in numerous fields owing to their intrinsic strength to weight ratio and various design benefits. However, these materials are prone to environmental aging, particularly moisture absorption. In essence, absorbed moisture infiltrates the polymer matrix and induces changes in the polymer network through chain scission, plasticization, and other bonding interactions. This causes irreversible damages to the material and significantly decreases mechanical strength. In this study, Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BbDS) has been used to identify the absorption mechanisms in glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites by detecting the related polarization mechanisms. Here, results show …

Due to continual exposure to moist environment, environmental degradation is a major threat to structural composites throughout their service life. Impedance Spectroscopy (IS)/Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BbDS) is a reliable nondestructive method that has been used in polymer industries for dielectric characterization of material. While moisture absorption causes irreversible changes in the polymer matrix composites, it also alters the electrical properties of the system which is detectable using BbDS. Since the physics that drives the change in electrical characteristics is driven by the modifications imposed by water molecules (whether free or bound), both events can be linked. A dielectric spectrum over …

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are being used in number of fields including aerospace, marine, sports, medical, power sectors, etc. due to their lightweight nature while retaining high mechanical performance in terms of high specific strength, stiffness, and great fatigue properties. However, the applicability of these materials is restricted by their stability up to a certain temperature (i.e. glass transition temperature) and environmental degradation (i.e. moisture, UV light, etc.). Moisture ingression greatly reduces their mechanical properties altering material structure by causing polymer plasticization, chain scission and fiber-polymer interface deterioration. These changes instantaneously affect the thermal properties of the materials which …

Many industries, including aircraft, automobiles, and marine, are using prepreg (pre-impregnated fibers and a partially cured polymer matrix) to manufacture composite parts to achieve optimum fiber and resin volume ratio and part repeatability. Since prepregs have a short out oflife (i.e., the maximum storing time allowed at room temperature), they must be stored in refrigerators at low temperatures, which, if not maintained, have an unfavorable influence on the intended quality of the final product. For the present study, glass/epoxy prepregs (expired out-life) were plasmatreated before being used to make the composite part to compensate for the room temperature aging effect. …

As the shrinkage of electronic devices becomes more appealing, so do their high capacity and efficiency. This demand for ever-shrinking sizes of electronic devices follows the trend predicted by Moore’s Law. To achieve smaller devices, reduced sizes of solder joints, Cu traces, Cu pads, and other components in packages are implemented with tighter tolerances for geometries and layouts. With each incremental change in dimension or material, new reliability challenges emerge. Electromigration (EM), the directional diffusion of atoms with the flow of electrons, has been an inevitable reliability concern for microelectronic device packaging. It is one common failure mechanism in wafer-level …

Musculoskeletal (MSK) injury includes any injuries that affect the bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, or nerves. Open bone fracture is one of the common types of MSK traumatic injuries which results in not only bone fracture but also damage/loss of associated muscles, nerve, vasculature, endothelium, periosteum, fascia, and connective tissue. Surgical procedures and biological interventions are required to fix the broken bone, and muscle transfer is performed to compensate the skeletal muscle defects. Current treatments include fixative metal implants and regenerative biopolymer scaffolds, then muscle flap procedures to cover the bone. Yet, these treatments are inadequate because the used materials do …

Electrolytic plasma processing (EPP) can be operated in two modes, namely plasma electrolytic saturation (PES) and plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). In this study, the PES was used to create hydrophilic surface profiles on titanium (Ti). The wettability, surface morphology characteristics and chemical composition of the treated samples were studied as a function of PES processing parameters. The PES profiled surfaces comprised of a characteristic “hills and valleys” morphology because of continuous surface melting and freezing cycles. A bimodal surface profile was produced with 2-3 µm height hills and valleys with nano-roughness (= 200 nm). The produced profile resulted in a …

Detection of organic chemicals in liquid medium have been gaining utmost attention in recent times. Real time detection and monitoring of a variety of environmental pollutants, explosive materials, chemical agents, and pharmaceutical drugs in liquid medium are of great need in today’s technological advancements. While there are several scattering, emission and spectroscopy techniques in use, Raman spectroscopy is attractive because of its molecular specificity i.e., each molecule has a Raman fingerprint. Raman spectroscopy utilizes the inelastic portion of the scattered wave for detection. But since intensity of inelastic scattering (Raman scattering) is very low, compared to the elastic scattering, low …

A composite is generally defined as a material composed of two or more separate sub-materials that complement each other's characteristics when combined. Composites are widely used in several major industries due to their low density, high strength, and relatively predictable chemical and electrical properties. One of the significant challenges of integrating composites into more diverse fields is the ability to accurately and consistently test for damages. Due to the myriad number of microscopic structures available in composite materials, a single-use testing system is a large contributor to current research. One approach to the non-destructive testing of composites lies in exploiting …
