Correlating Grain Size To Radiation Damage Tolerance Of Tungsten Materials Exposed To Relevant Fusion Conditions, Sean Robert Gonderman Jul 2014

Correlating Grain Size To Radiation Damage Tolerance Of Tungsten Materials Exposed To Relevant Fusion Conditions, Sean Robert Gonderman

Open Access Theses

Tungsten remains a leading candidate for plasma facing component (PFC) in future fusion devices. This is in large part due to its strong thermal and mechanical properties. The ITER project has already chosen to use an all tungsten divertor. Despite having a high melting temperature and low erosion rate, tungsten faces a large variety of issues when subject to fusion like conditions. These include embrittlement, melting, and extreme morphology change (growth of fuzz nanostructure). The work presented here investigates mechanisms that drive surface morphology change in tungsten materials exposed to fusion relevant plasmas. Specifically, tungsten materials of different grain sizes …

Open Access Dissertations

Tin-based solder is ubiquitous in microelectronics manufacturing and plays a critical role in electronic packaging and attachment. While manufacturers of consumer electronics have made the transition to the use of lead-free solder, there are still a variety of reliability issues associated with these lead-free alternatives, particularly for high performance, high reliability applications. Because of these performance short-comings, researchers are still searching for a material, an alloy, or a unique alternative that can meet the thermal, mechanical, and electrical requirements for conventional reflow solder applications. In an effort to produce a more reliable alternative, Kim et al. proposed the low-temperature (200°C) …

Characterizing The Pore Structure Of Carbonated Natural Wollastonite, Chiara Villani, Robert Spragg, Raikhan Tokpatayeva, Jan Olek, W. Jason Weiss

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

This paper focuses on examining the pore structure of a cementitious paste made with a calcium silicate (wollastonite) that reacts with carbon dioxide and water to form a hardened solid. The pore structure of the hardened solid has been characterized using vapor sorption and desorption, low-temperature differential scanning calorimetry (LT-DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The total porosity was also measured using mass measurement in oven-dry and vacuum-saturated conditions. Evidence exists that support the hypothesis that the solid has two main pore sizes: large macropores (>10 nm) appear to form between the initial calcium silicate particles and small micropores …

Shear Rheological Characterization Of Gel Healing Response And Construction Of Rheo-Piv System, Abhishek Deepak Bawiskar Apr 2014

Shear Rheological Characterization Of Gel Healing Response And Construction Of Rheo-Piv System, Abhishek Deepak Bawiskar

Open Access Theses

Thermo-reversible gels are solvent-filled 3D networks of polymer chains interconnected by physical (transient) crosslinks. On applying a high shear stress, the crosslinks are broken and these gels show a typical stress-strain behavior due to cohesive fracture of the gel. When heated above a critical temperature and cooled back to room temperature, all the crosslinks are re-formed. Interestingly, partial to full recovery of broken crosslinks is also observed by simply letting the gel stand at room temperature. In this study, the fracture and healing behavior of a model acrylic triblock copolymer gel has been characterized by shear rheometry. A mathematical model …

Examining The Freezing And Thawing Behavior Of Concretes With Improved Performance Through Internal Curing And Other Methods, Wesley A. Jones

Open Access Theses

Internally cured (IC) concrete has been emerging over the last decade as an effective way to improve the performance of concrete. IC holds promise for producing concretes with an increased resistance to early-age cracking and ultimately enhancing the durability of structures. It is a simple and effective way to ensure proper hydration of cementitious material in high performance concrete mixtures; mixtures in which traditional, external, curing can be ineffective. IC supplies water that is necessary to relieve stress buildup from chemical shrinkage and in turn helping to prevent early age shrinkage cracking.^ The first part of this thesis presents and …

Detailed Finite Element Analysis And Preliminary Study Of The Effects Of Friction And Fastener Pre-Tension On The Mechanical Behavior Of Fastened Built-Up Members, Francisco Javier Bonachera Martin Apr 2014

Detailed Finite Element Analysis And Preliminary Study Of The Effects Of Friction And Fastener Pre-Tension On The Mechanical Behavior Of Fastened Built-Up Members, Francisco Javier Bonachera Martin

Open Access Theses

The characterization of fatigue resistance is one of the main concerns in structural engineering, a concern that is particularly important in the evaluation of existing bridge members designed or erected before the development of fatigue design provisions. The ability of a structural member to develop alternate load paths after the failure of a component is known as member-level or internal redundancy. In fastened built-up members, these alternate load paths are affected by the combination of fastener pre-tension and friction between the structural member components in contact. In this study, a finite element methodology to model and analyze riveted and bolted …

Blast Energy Mitigation In Porous Rocks, Brittany Corinne Essink Apr 2014

Blast Energy Mitigation In Porous Rocks, Brittany Corinne Essink

Open Access Theses

Geo-materials are commonly used and sought after for blast mitigation applications due to their wide availability and low cost compared to industry trademarked materials. Characterization of these natural geo-materials such as volcanic rocks is of paramount importance in determining their blast mitigation capabilities. While there is a large amount of information available for materials such as concrete or sand blasts, information on the properties of volcanic rocks is far more scarce. This lack of data is due to the wide range of existing natural volcanic rocks and the variation in the minerals and pore structures of the rocks.

In this …

Post-Fracture Capacity Of Railroad Flat Car Bridges, Teresa L. Washeleski Mar 2014

Post-Fracture Capacity Of Railroad Flat Car Bridges, Teresa L. Washeleski

Purdue Road School

Railroad flatcars (RRFCs) are a convenient option to replace existing deteriorating bridge structures on low-volume roads. They are typically used as the bridge superstructure by placing two or more flatcars side-by-side to achieve the desired bridge width. Utilizing RRFCs as a bridge allows for rapid construction and greater cost savings compared to traditional practices. These benefits make them an attractive solution for rural communities in Indiana, as well as other states.

Uncertainty remains about the response under higher loads than could be easily achieved in the field and the level of redundancy of railroad flatcar bridges. Using RRFCs as bridges …

Post-Failure Capacity Of Built-Up Steel Members, Matthew H. Hebdon Mar 2014

Post-Failure Capacity Of Built-Up Steel Members, Matthew H. Hebdon

Purdue Road School

Mechanically fastened built-up steel members have long been known to possess internal member redundancy and, as a result, multiple load paths which can be exploited to increase their functional life. Internal redundancy provides the ability to resist total member failure in the event of a fracture of an individual component. However, there is little experimental data in the literature regarding post-fracture capacity in terms of strength and subsequent fatigue life. The experimental study currently underway will provide needed information on parameters that affect the ability of built- up members to arrest a fracture as well as the available remaining fatigue …

Jamming Rheology Of Model Cementitious Suspensions Composed Of Comb-Polymer Stabilized Magnesium Oxide Particles, Lisa R. Murray, Kendra Erk Jan 2014

Jamming Rheology Of Model Cementitious Suspensions Composed Of Comb-Polymer Stabilized Magnesium Oxide Particles, Lisa R. Murray, Kendra Erk

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The colloidal microstructure of concentrated suspensions containing anionic comb- polymer-stabilized magnesium oxide (MgO) particles in water was analyzed by shear rheometry for indications of changes in particle microstructure based on particle size and comb-polymer usage. As the suspensions were sheared at different rates, jamming in the sheared MgO suspensions was observed as shear stress overshoots. The shear-induced evolution of the suspension’s microstructure was strongly related to the perceived interactions between neighboring MgO particles in the suspension. In the jammed state, interactions are believed to be enhanced by the formation of entanglements between opposing comb-polymer side-chains. Steric repulsion between side-chains was …

Analysis Of The Influence Of Organic Corrosion Inhibitors On Corrosion Of Reinforcement In Concrete Bridge Structure Under Simulated Field Service Environment, Liang Shi, J. Ye, C. C. Chen, Y. Wu, J. Z. Liu

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

For concrete bridge projects in marine environments, attention must be paid to the reinforcement corrosion problems caused by chloride intrusion. As kinds of functional admixtures, which can reduce the reinforcement corrosion rate, corrosion inhibitors are becoming very popular in China in new bridge projects. Corrosion inhibitors cover both inorganic and organic inhibitors. Nitrite is representative of inorganic corrosion inhibitors, but its carcinogenicity has hindered its further development. Organic corrosion inhibitors such as small-molecule-based alcohol amine series are becoming the focus of attention. To guide the scientific applications of organic corrosion inhibitors, China is carrying out broad applications technology research. But …

Freeze Thaw Durability Of Internally Cured Concrete Made Using Superabsorbent Polymers, Wesley A. Jones, W. Jason Weiss Jan 2014

Freeze Thaw Durability Of Internally Cured Concrete Made Using Superabsorbent Polymers, Wesley A. Jones, W. Jason Weiss

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

The use of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) to produce internally cured concrete has been shown to be effective in reducing the potential for restrained shrinkage cracking of high performance concrete mixtures. However, not much is known regarding the freeze–thaw durability of concrete mixtures that incorporate SAPs for internal curing (IC). When SAP particles desorb (or partially desorb) the “water” (pore fluid) they contain for the purposes of IC, some believe that the void space created by these particles can provide enough empty voids to accommodate the additional volume caused by water expansion upon freezing. This paper investigates the freeze–thaw durability of …

Influence Of Organic Inhibitor On Corrosion Resistance Of Steel In Simulated Concrete Pore Solution, Jingshun S. Cai, C. C. Chen, J. Z. Liu, J. P. Liu Jan 2014

Influence Of Organic Inhibitor On Corrosion Resistance Of Steel In Simulated Concrete Pore Solution, Jingshun S. Cai, C. C. Chen, J. Z. Liu, J. P. Liu

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

Organic corrosion inhibitor is one of lower cost technologies that limit the deterioration of concrete structures. The influence of a newly prepared organic corrosion inhibitor on the corrosion behavior of carbon steel in simulated concrete pore solution was investigated by polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and so on. The effect of organic corrosion inhibitors on concrete working performance was also studied. The results show that the corrosion rate decreases with the concentration of inhibitor increase; when the content of inhibitor up to 1.5% versus water, the oxide film was completely passive. Organic corrosion inhibitor had no effect on work performance.

Cellulose Nanocrystals As A Material For Microencapsulation, Lauren C. Kennedy, Congwang Ye, Colton Steiner, Carlos Martinez

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Cellulose is an abundant, biodegradable, and inexpensive renewable polymer that is light in weight with high mechanical strength (Habibi, Lucia, Rojas 2010). Full fibers of cellulose have been used in many products such as plastics and textiles for over a century and a half, but recently, modern extraction techniques have made it possible to investigate uses for minuscule cellulose fibers (Habibi, Lucia, Rojas 2010). Through acid hydrolysis, cellulose fibers become rod-like nanostructures with a high aspect ratio that are known as Cellulose Nanocrystals (CNCs) (Habibi, Lucia, Rojas 2010). Since CNCs are biodegradable and derive from a renewable resource, finding ways …

Efficiently Dispersing Carbon Nanotubes In Polyphenylene Sulfide, Kevin M. Sommer, R. Byron Pipes

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Thermal plastics are replacing conventional metals in the aerospace, sporting, electronics, and other industries. Thermal plastics are able to withstand relatively high temperatures, have good fatigue properties, and are lighter than metals. Unfortunately, they are not very electrically conductive. However, adding carbon nanotubes to thermal plastics such as polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) can drastically increase the plastic's conductivity at a low weight percent of nanotubes called the percolation threshold. The percolation threshold is the point where adding a little more carbon nanotubes brings together the network of nanotubes and greatly increases the conductivity. We need to learn how to increase the …

Prediction Of Fiber Orientation In Compression Molded Parts Of Short-Fiber-Reinforced Thermoplastics, Anshuman Jagtap, R Byron Pipes, Chris Schwall, Ethan Brubaker

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Short Fiber molded thermoplastics like poly ether ketone ketone (PEKK) have the potential to be used to build reinforcement structures for next generation air crafts. Because of the anisotropic properties of these fibers, it is necessary to know the orientation of fibers in molded parts to determine the strength of parts. The goal of the project is to prepare samples that will be used to determine the spatial distribution of fibers as a function of the parts thickness and for comparison with computer generated models to test for accuracy. Using a full factorial method the effects of four key control …

Testing Self Healing Properties In Polymers, Hamsini Gopalakrishna, John Blendell Oct 2013

Testing Self Healing Properties In Polymers, Hamsini Gopalakrishna, John Blendell

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Mussels and barnacles have the ability to stick to underwater surfaces with the help of a cross-linked protein structure. Reduction in the plastic consumption can be achieved by using toughened polymers. Synthesized cross-linking polymers can be used for underwater adhesion by mimicking the protein structure used by mussels and barnacles. One such polymer is poly(3,4-dihydroxystyrene-co-styrene) having enhanced toughness. Traditionally, blister tests measure the adhesion between a substrate to a surface but this was modified to serve as the driving force to drive crack propagation in controlled flaws. The modified blister tests were carried out on polystyrene (PS) samples. Once the …

Silver Oxide-Graphene Sensor For Hydrogen Peroxide, Austin D. Scherbarth, L Stanciu Oct 2013

Silver Oxide-Graphene Sensor For Hydrogen Peroxide, Austin D. Scherbarth, L Stanciu

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

A nonenzymatic, amperometric sensor for Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) was designed by drop coating glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs) with Silver Oxide (Ag2O). Combining Ag2O with Graphene Oxide and a polymer, PEDOT, was also attempted in order to increase stability and electrochemical properties. Using metal oxides along with Graphene Oxide for sensors has been done quite a bit, but Ag2O itself has not been research extensively. So, in order to produce the best H2O2 sensor, the configuration of all components had to be optimized. Three different Ag2O …

Characterization Of Hardness And Elastic Modulus Of A Pharmaceutical Material For Multiple Crystal Orientations, Alexis L. Mertz, David F. Bahr

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Nanoindentation has made it possible to test material properties of extremely brittle molecular crystals, which include many pharmaceuticals. An antifungal, griseofulvin, is tested to determine differences in hardness and elastic modulus for different crystal orientations. Hardness and elastic modulus are determined by nanoindentation on single crystals that are rotated in 15° intervals. There are differences in hardness at rotation degrees of 45°, 60°, and 75° from the 0° orientation and differences in elastic modulus at rotation degrees of 15°, 60°, and 75° from the 0° orientation. It is also found that the elastic modulus and hardness values of the 75° …
