Thin films of indium sulphide containing oxygen have been synthesized following a dry physical process. The constituents are deposited by thermal evaporation on glass substrates and then annealed under argon flow. Polycrystalline β-In2S3 containing oxygen thin films are obtained as soon as the temperature of annealing is between 623 and 723 K. In this paper, these β-In2S3 thin films have optically been studied. The optical band gap is direct. Its value is not dependent on the temperature of annealing. It is about 2.8 eV, which is higher than that of β-In2S3 …

Optoacoustic techniques are widely used to probe and characterize target materials including solids, liquids and gases. Included in such applications are diagnoses of thin films and semiconductor materials. The need to obtain greater spatial resolution requires the generation of shorter optoacoustic pulses. For such pulses, non-thermal effects may be quite important. On the other hand, even when an optoacoustic pulse is generated by an initially non-thermal technique, the thermal aspects become important in its evolution and propagation. However, the SiC processing technology has not yet reached maturity. There is also limited knowledge of its physical and chemical characteristics, and its device behavior is not well understood. A static test method for modeling low-velocity foreign object impact events to composites would prove to be very beneficial to researchers since much more data can be obtained from a static test than from an impact test. In order to examine if this is feasible, a series of static indentation and low velocity impact tests were carried out and compared. We have proposed determination procedure of the relative amounts of rust constituents of steel. Mossbauer spectroscopy provides the relative amounts of crystalline rust constituents including ultra-fine crystals. A quantitative analysis of ultra-fine crystals is possible with the resolution of several percent by comparing the Mossbauer results with the relative amounts of rust constituents determined by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy.

Textured films of molybdenum disulfide have been obtained by solid state reaction between the constituents in thin films form when a (200) oriented tungsten sheet is used as substrate. The crystallites have their c axis perpendicular to the plane of the substrate. The annealing conditions are T=1073K and t=30 min. The films are stoichoimetric and p type. Such highly textured films are achieved without foreign atom addition (Ni, Co...). It appears, as shown by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, that a thin WS2 layer is present at the interface W/MoS2. Bridge and pier components are a couple of recent applications due the composite's resistance to corrosion from salt water. Fabrication of high quantum efficiency, long lifetime negative electron affinity photocathodes is important for applications such as photomultipliers, image intensifiers, electron beam lithography, electron microscopy, and polarized electron sources. The surface cleanliness of the III-V semiconductor photocathode is crucial in obtaining high photosensitivity.

GaAs(100) and InP(100) photocathodes are prepared by atomic hydrogen cleaning. The cleaning effect on the photocathode performance is discussed. The surface degradation mechanisms which reduce the photocathode lifetime are presented. The photocathode surface cleanliness, structure, and morphology are studied using reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED).

Mössbauer Effect Determination Of Relative Recoilless Fractions For Iron Oxides, Sei J. Oh, Desmond C. Cook

The relative recoilless fraction (F-value) of each of six iron oxides, defined as the ratio of the recoil-free fractions of two different materials, was experimentally determined relative to hematite at 300 K and 77 K by Mössbauer spectroscopy. Using the relative recoil-free fractions compared to that of hematite, the relative recoilless fractions between all pairs of the seven iron oxides were determined. The F-values can allow conversion of Mössbauer subspectral areas to the relative atomic, molecular, or weight fractions of each iron oxide present in a mixed oxide phase sample.

The numerical solution of two classes of hypersingular integral equations is addressed. Both classes are integral equations of the first kind, and are hypersingular due to a kernel containing a Hadamard singularity. The convergence of a Galerkin method and a collocation method is discussed and computationally efficient algorithms are developed for each class of hypersingular integral equation.

Interest in these classes of hypersingular integral equations is due to their occurrence in many physical applications. This thesis presents the results of an experimental and theoretical study of the flexural behavior of thermoplastic beams with and without fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) rebars. Tests are conducted on commercially available thermoplastic beams known as Seatimber. The normal stress-strain relations of both the thermoplastic material and FRP rebars are obtained in tension and compression experimentally. These mechanical property curves are then used as part of the input for developing the theoretical moment-curvature relations using an iterative equilibrium procedure. Typical field emitters consist of sharp metal tips which usually have a short life due to erosion and contamination. To improve the performance of regular field emitters, diamond can be placed on the emitter tip. This is done by selectively growing diamond on tungsten tips using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) processing. Diamond exhibits negative electron affinity, so that electrons will be emitted by properly biasing the tip.

To obtain single crystal growth right at the tip, a cantilever controlled nucleation method was developed which worked better than other methods. Surface preparation was also important to the growth process. An oxide …

Thin film strain gauges have many applications as transducers for monitoring pressure, vibration, and acceleration. In this thesis, a simple system, consisting of a Nichrome thin film strain gauge deposited on a glass substrate, is investigated in detail. Finite element analysis is used to model the expected sensor behavior. The substrate is shaped to exhibit a constant strain distribution, and is set up in a cantilever beam configuration. R. Low-speed impact response of laminated composite panels is simulated without material damage using the DYNA3D finite element analysis code. The DYNA3D code is a nonlinear transient dynamics simulation tool with a contact algorithm for impact. By gaining a more comprehensive understanding of this dynamic impact event, this work is meant to contribute to improving designs for damage tolerance and residual strength by providing modeling and analysis guidelines for the analyst.

Pultruded composites utilize polymers as matrices and therefore are susceptible to time-dependent effects. The positive effects of increasing the clamping force in bolted joints are well known. Optical and electrical properties of CuAlSe2 thin films obtained by selenization of Cu/Al/Cu...Al/Cu layers sequentially deposited have been investigated. It is shown that the expected energy gap (2.67 eV) is measured for well crystallized films, whereas a slightly higher value is measured for films not so well crystallized. Raman diffusion also shows differences between well and poorly crystallized films with peaks corresponding to the reference powder for the former samples. A p-type conductivity is found whatever the crystalline quality of the samples. The conductivity of the films depends also strongly on their crystalline properties. When the films are badly …

CuAlSe2 thin films have been synthesized by chalcogenization of thin Cu and Al layers sequentially deposited by evaporation under vacuum. It is shown that CuAlSe2 films are obtained with some Cu2-δSe and Se phases present at the surface. These surface phases are suppressed by annealing under vacuum and by chemical etching in a KCN solution. At the end of the process, the XRD spectrum demonstrates that textured CuAlSe2 films have been obtained with preferential orientation of the crystallites along the (112) direction. The study of corrosion behavior was performed using three different analytical techniques, which provided information on the formation, development and layering of iron oxides on the corrosion products as a function of atmospheric conditions, exposure time and type of steel. In particular, the protective layer formed on weathering steel was investigated as a function of different amounts of alloying elements in the steel, atmospheric conditions and exposure times. Combined together, the results provided a better understanding of the atmospheric corrosion behavior of steel, and formed a part of database of the atmospheric corrosion characteristics.

This investigation utilizes the open hole tension (OHT) specimen loaded in tension-tension fatigue under isothermal, fixed frequency conditions. A range of load levels and temperature levels where chosen to assess performance. These loads and temperatures ranged from relatively benign conditions (low stress, room temperature) up through aggressive conditions (high stress, high temperature). Measurements of stiffness, damage accumulation, residual strength, weight loss, and glass transition temperature (Tg) were made. Monte Carlo based numerical simulations were performed to study photoemission from GaAs and diamond. The central goal was to assess the potential for NEA photoemission from diamond, and to predict its characteristics. The GaAs material system was also included in the simulation study to provide: (i) calibration and validation of the numerical model developed by carefully matching the simulation results with available experimental data, and (ii) quantitative comparisons between the response characteristics of diamond and the better known GaAs system.

The primary objectives of this research were to clinically examine the New Jersey Low Contact Stress (LCS)™ Rotating Platform and Meniscal knee bearing systems and to investigate the tribological properties of a new polymer for potential application in total joint replacement. Thus, clinical studies were performed on subjects having the LCSTM Rotating Platform knee bearing and subjects having the LCS™ meniscal knee bearing. A new technique for continuous, real-time, in-situ detection of natural corrosion of aluminum alloys is presented. The technique is a generalized version of attenuated total reflectance (ATR) spectroscopy, that combines optical fibers and a Michelson interferometer spectrometer to make evanescent wave absorption measurements. Aluminum hydroxide is one of the major corrosion products of aluminum. Mechanical alloying of nitrogen into bcc-fe powder is a very effective and efficient means of obtaining very high concentration of nitrogen in micron-size iron particles. Mechanical alloying increases the concentration of nitrogen in the iron powder far in excess of the bcc-Fe lattice low nitrogen solubility, however most of the infused nitrogen resides on the nano-size grain boundaries and in nano-size bct-fe that forms during mechanical alloying.

The demand to improve the corrosion resistance of steel sheet, particularly for use within the automotive industry, has led to a dramatic increase in the use of coated steels in place of cold-rolled sheet steel. Galvanneal steel results from the post annealing of the zinc-coated steel sheet, in which iron and zinc are interdiffused to form an iron-zinc alloy coating. An experimental investigation was conducted to evaluate the hole size effects, i.e., the reduction in strength with an increase in hole size at a constant stress concentration factor, for a glass fiber reinforced epoxy crossply laminate during tensile fracture. The characteristic dimension according to the point-stress and average-stress criteria of the two-parameter models proposed by Whitney and Nuismer were determined and compared for a circular hole, optimized circular hole, square hole with radiused corners and square hole with sharp corners.
