Effect of the addition of carbon on phase formations in AlxCoCrFeNiCu (x = 0.3, 1.5, 2.8) high-entropy alloys (HEAs) was studied. Free diffusion of carbon from graphite crucible resulted in the partitioning of the entire Cr from the matrix and the formation of the (Cr,Fe)23C6 phase in all HEAs. No other metal-carbide phase was detected. The formation of (Cr,Fe)23C6 enhanced the overall hardness of the HEAs. By increasing the amount of Al, the Cr amount decreased resulting in the reduction of carbon diffusion and volume fraction of the (Cr,Fe)23C6 …

Elucidating The Effect Of Water-To-Cement Ratio On The Hydration Mechanisms Of Cement, Aida Margarita Ley-Hernandez, Jonathan Lapeyre, Rachel Cook, Aditya Kumar, Dimitri Feys
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The hydration of cement is often modeled as a phase boundary nucleation and growth (pBNG) process. Classical pBNG models, based on the use of isotropic and constant growth rate of the main hydrate, that is, calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H), are unable to explain the lack of any significant effect of the water-to-cement (w/c) ratio on the hydration kinetics of cement. This paper presents a modified form of the pBNG model, in which the anisotropic growth of C-S-H is allowed to vary in relation to the nonlinear evolution of its supersaturation in solution. Results show that once the supercritical C-S-H nuclei form, their …

Corrosion Resistance Of Pipeline Steel With Damaged Enamel Coating And Cathodic Protection, Liang Fan, Signo Tadeu Dos Reis, Genda Chen, Michael L. Koenigstein
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents the first report on the corrosion resistance of pipeline steel with damaged enamel coating and cathodic protection in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution. In particular, dual cells are set up to separate the solution in contact with the damaged and intact enamel coating areas, to produce a local corrosion resistance measurement for the first time. Enamel-coated steel samples, with two levels of cathodic protection, are tested to investigate their impedance by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and their cathodic current demand by a potentiostatic test. Due to its glass transition temperature, the enamel-coated pipeline can be operated on …

Efficiency Of Solid Inclusion Removal From The Steel Melt By Ceramic Foam Filter: Design And Experimental Validation, Soumava Chakraborty, Ronald J. O'Malley, Laura Bartlett, Mingzhi Xu
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
An investigation was performed to measure the efficiency of solid alumina inclusion removal by filtration during casting. A mold design was developed using modeling software to produce two castings that fill simultaneously, one with a filter and the other without a filter. The design avoided vortex formation and thus air entrainment, which helped to avoid reoxidation inside the mold cavity. Samples from these castings were analyzed utilizing an SEM/EDS system with automated feature analysis (AFA) to measure the efficiency of inclusion removal using a 20 ppi zirconia foam filter. This study also documents the occurrence of inclusion flotation and agglomeration …

Effects Of The Tempering And High-Pressure Torsion Temperatures Onmicrostructure Of Ferritic/Martensitic Steel Grade 91, Artur Ganeev, Marina Nikitina, Vil Sitdikov, Rinat Islamgaliev, Andrew Hoffman, Haiming Wen
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Grade 91 (9Cr-1Mo) steel was subjected to various heat treatments and then to high-pressure torsion (HPT) at different temperatures. Its microstructure was studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Effects of the tempering temperature and the HPT temperature on the microstructural features and microhardness in the ultrafine-grained (UFG) Grade 91 steel were researched. The study of the UFG structure formation takes into account two different microstructures observed: before HPT in both samples containing martensite and in fully ferritic samples.

Understanding Homogeneous Nucleation In Solidification Of Aluminum By Molecular Dynamics Simulations, A. Mahata, Mohsen Asle Zaeem, M. I. Baskes
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Homogeneous nucleation from aluminum (Al) melt was investigated by million-atom molecular dynamics simulations utilizing the second nearest neighbor modified embedded atom method potentials. The natural spontaneous homogenous nucleation from the Al melt was produced without any influence of pressure, free surface effects and impurities. Initially isothermal crystal nucleation from undercooled melt was studied at different constant temperatures, and later superheated Al melt was quenched with different cooling rates. The crystal structure of nuclei, critical nucleus size, critical temperature for homogenous nucleation, induction time, and nucleation rate were determined. The quenching simulations clearly revealed three temperature regimes: sub-critical nucleation, super-critical nucleation, …

Micro-Slotting Technique For Measurement Of Local Residual Stress In Metallic Materials, Elizabeth Anne Burns
Doctoral Dissertations
"Micro-slotting, a micro-scale relaxation residual stress measurement technique, has been shown in recent years to be a reliable method for measuring local residual stresses in metallic materials. This technique employs an SEM-focused ion beam system for milling and imaging, digital image correlation software to track displacements due to residual stress relaxation, and finite element analysis for interpolation of the original local stress state. In this research, a micro-slotting procedure was established using finite element models and was used to obtain sub-surface residual stress measurements on machined and shot peened planar Ti-6Al-4V samples. These measurements were compared to macro-scale XRD residual …

However, high crude price and higher carbon footprint has lead interest of researchers to synthesis PU foams using plant-based raw materials, that are inexpensive and renewable. In this dissertation, PU foams were fabricated using soy-based polyol and its thermal and mechanical properties were investigated. In the first part, of PU foam samples with different formulations were fabricated using soy-based polyol HB230, and varying amounts …
Functionalized Nanoporous Carbon Scaffolds For Hydrogen Storage Applications, Christopher L. Carr
Functionalized Nanoporous Carbon Scaffolds For Hydrogen Storage Applications, Christopher L. Carr
Doctoral Dissertations
"Recent efforts have demonstrated confinement in porous scaffolds at the nanoscale can alter the hydrogen sorption properties of metal hydrides, though not to an extent feasible for use in onboard hydrogen storage applications, proposing the need for a method allowing further modifications. The work presented here explores how the functionalization of nanoporous carbon scaffold surfaces with heteroatoms can modify the hydrogen sorption properties of confined metal hydrides in relation to non-functionalized scaffolds (FS). Investigations of nanoconfined LiBH4 and NaAlH4 indicate functionalizing the carbon scaffold surface with nitrogen can shift the activation energy of hydrogen desorption in excess of …

Chemistry, Design, And Processing Of Two-Stage Trip Steel, Daniel M. Field
Doctoral Dissertations
"A regular solution model was developed to calculate the chemical driving force for α-martensite formation, ΔGλ→ αChem. A model for the strain energy, ΔGλ→αstr, was formulated utilizing the Young’s modulus (E), lattice misfit squared (δ²), and molar volume (Ω) which opposed the chemical driving force for α-martensite formation. The MαS was determined at a temperature at which ΔGλ→αChem + ΔGλ→αstr = 0. In conjunction with a previously developed ε-martensite model, a means of predicting the volume fraction of λ-austenite was determined; and it was shown that for values …

Corrosion Performance Of Zirconium-Based Passivations On Electroplated Zinc Nickel, Madison Morgan Reed
Masters Theses
“Performance requirements for Department of Defense (DoD) electrical components include corrosion and electrical contact resistance. Historically, electroplated cadmium with a chromate conversion coating (CrCC) has been used to meet corrosion and contact resistance standards. However, replacements are needed for these materials because they are toxic and carcinogenic. Electroplated γ-ZnNi has been identified as an acceptable alternative to Cd. This study evaluated commercially available Zr-based thin films and sealers as passivations for potential replacement of CrCCs. Ten different passivations were tested and compared with bare γ-ZnNi. X-Bond and Zircobond passivations were found to provide some improvement to the bare ZnNi corrosion …

Effect Of Microstructural Features On Steel Machinability, Mark C. Emmendorfer
Masters Theses
Non-metallic inclusions can have a tremendous impact on the machinability of steel. Some oxide inclusions such as alumina, spinel, and other refractory abrasive oxide inclusions can have a detrimental effect on machinability. Modification of oxide inclusions by calcium treatment can promote the formation of low melting point oxides such as anorthite and gehlenite inclusions that can assist in chip formation and form a lubricating layer on the rake surface of the machine tool. MnS is known to be beneficial to improving the machinability of steel. They assist in chip formation by being heavily deformed in the primary shear zone. Sulfide …

High Temperature Polymer Composites Using Out-Of-Autoclave Processing, Sudharshan Anandan
Doctoral Dissertations
"High performance polymer composites possess high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and have design flexibility. Carbon/epoxy composites are commonly used aerospace materials. Bismaleimide based composites are used as a replacement for epoxy systems at higher service temperatures. Aerospace composites are usually manufactured, under high pressure, in an autoclave which requires high capital investments and operating costs. In contrast, out-of-autoclave manufacturing, specifically vacuum-bag-only prepreg process, is capable of producing low cost and high performance composites. In the current study, out-of-autoclave processing of high temperature carbon/bismaleimide composites was evaluated. The cure and process parameters were optimized. The properties of out-of-autoclave cured laminates compared …

"The transport and interfacial phenomena in laser melting and crystallization of silicon in micro-/nano-scale confinement lacks sufficient understanding. Uncovering the underlying mechanisms, and hence harness the melting and crystallization processes can help the formation of controllable single-crystal structures or patterns. In this dissertation, a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was conducted to calculate the interfacial free energy of the silicon system in contact with flat and structured walls. Then the calculated interfacial energies were employed to predict the nucleation mechanisms in a slab of liquid silicon confined by two walls and compared with MD simulation results. Further, in combination with a …

Facile Synthesis Of Nanostructured Metal Borides And Composites For Applications In Sustainable Energy, Maalavan Arivu
Masters Theses
"Electrocatalytic water splitting is a promising solution for sustainable energy generation since one of the half reactions lead to the formation of H2 which is a clean fuel. The other half of the reaction leading to O2 evolution is an energy intensive process necessitating the need for an electrocatalyst to break the activation barrier for the commencement of the reaction. In this work we will focus on expanding the family of non-oxidic OER electro-catalysts, especially borides, whereby, apart from facilitating delocalization of electron cloud on the catalytically active transition metal site, low anion electronegativity and increased covalency in …

Ce-Al-O coatings with thicknesses between ca. 136 nm and 1094 nm were deposited on Al 2024-T3 alloy substrates using magnetron co-sputtering of independent Al and CeO2 targets. The Ce-Al-O coatings with thicknesses from ca. 136 nm to 490 nm were compact, dense, and did not have distinct X-ray diffraction peaks. The ca. 1094 nm thick Ce-Al-O coating exhibited a columnar-textured outer layer ∼700 nm thick and a dense, ∼390 nm thick inner layer. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the Ce-Al-O coatings contained Ce (III) species, and that the Al/Ce atomic ratio decreased with increasing coating thickness. Electrochemical corrosion data …

A Simple Model For Elastic-Plastic Contact Of Granular Geomaterials, Jian Wang, Qimin Li, Changwei Yang, Yidan Huang, Caizhi Zhou
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We propose a simple elastic-plastic contact model by considering the interaction of two spheres in the normal direction, for use in discrete element method (DEM) simulations of geomaterials. This model has been developed by using the finite element method (FEM) and nonlinear fitting methods, in the form of power-law relation of the dimensionless normal force and displacement. Only four parameters are needed for each loading-unloading contact process between two spheres, which are relevant to material properties evaluated by FEM simulations. Within the given range of material properties, those four parameters can be quickly accessed by interpolating the data appended or …

We investigate the interaction of ultrashort laser pulses with ternary zinc phosphate glasses. We explore the viability of ten different glass compositions with different levels of alumina to inscribe optical waveguides via the fs-laser direct writing technique, finding that only samples with [O]/[P] ratios of 3.25 are suitable candidates. We also test a zinc magnesium phosphate glass to fabricate waveguide Bragg gratings in order to generate filters and mirrors with specific spectral properties. Confocal Raman spectroscopy inspection shows that laser-damaged material exhibits a relative intensity decrease and a subtle blue-shift on the 1209 cm-1 Raman peak, which implies a relative …
