It appears to be worthwhile to carry out the reduction, carburization, and pre-alloying in one process, i.e. reducing tungsten oxide with the dissociated hydrogen from titanium hydride and the added carbon; then carburizing the reduced tungsten metal and dissociated titanium metal; at last, pre-alloying the mixture of TiC and WC. "It has been found that the aging of clay-grog-water mixes before pressing proves to be quite beneficial. The purpose of the aging period is to allow the added water to disseminate throughout the mixture of clay (plastic) and grog (non-plastic) in an effort to bring about the best bonding action possible. The clay-grog-water mixture, if not aged, is of a sticky consistency; while, if the same mixture is aged for twenty-four (24) hours, it is readily workable. "In 1898 F. Heusler discovered that certain alloys containing only copper, manganese, and tin are ferromagnetic. Since that time, ferromagnetic alloys have been reported to occur in the ternary systems copper-manganese-aluminum, copper-manganese-arsenic, copper-manganese-boron, copper-manganese-antimony, copper-manganese-zinc, silver-manganese-aluminum, and silver-manganese-tin. Such ferromagnetic alloys containing only non-ferromagnetic elements have come to be called "Heusler alloys."

From the metallographic standpoint, the ferromagnetic copper-manganese-aluminum and copper-manganese-tin alloys have been the most fully investigated of the Heusler alloys. These alloys owe their ferromagnetism to the beta phases in their respective systems. The structure of the beta phase is based on a body-centered cubic lattice.

"The Bureau of Mines in conjunction with their Electrolytic Manganese Alloys program has developed a series of age hardening copper-manganese-nickel alloys having properties which compare favorably with those of copper-beryllium alloys...An unusual and highly desirable characteristic of these alloys is their insensitiveness to rate of cooling from the solution temperature.
