Using Shrimp Shells As Based Catalysts For Fame Production From Palm Oil Feedstock, Assadaporn Poonanan, Anupat Prukpaiboon, Paul Egwuonw Dim, Mutsee Termtanun
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
In this study, waste shrimp shells from industry were used as a heterogeneous bio-based catalyst for trans-esterification reaction of fresh palm oil. CaO was prepared from shrimp shells calcination. Surface area, phase composition, and basicity of the calcined shrimp shell catalysts were studied using N2 adsorption (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and CO2 temperature-programmed-desorption (CO2-TPD), respectively. The influence of shrimp shells calcination temperature and operation condition, methanol to palm oil ratio on trans-esterification reaction, were investigated. Five hours trans-esterification was carried out at 65℃ using different shrimp shell at four different calcination temperature: 700, 750, 800 and 850℃ with 9:1 methanol …

Extraction Of Cellulose Nanofibers From Empty Palm Fruit Bunches Via Mechanical Defibrillation, Zi-Qian Tan, Takaomi Kobayashi, Duangdao Aht-Ong
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in finding alternative material to replace fossil-oil based product due to the environmental concern. Lignocellulosic biomass has emerged as the promising candidate due to its low-cost and sustainability. The objective of this work was to prepare cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) from empty palm fruit bunches (EPFB), which are the waste originating from palm oil industry. Cellulose fibers were first extracted from EPFB by chemical treatment, followed by mechanical disintegration using high-pressure homogenization. Fiber concentration and defibrillation time during mechanical treatment were studied to investigate their effects on the properties of produced nanofibers. …

Large piezoelectric properties was observed in (1-x)BZT-(x)BCT where x=0.5 or Ba0.85Ca0.15Ti0.9Zr0.1O3 (denoted as BCZT), leading to a promising candidate for lead-free piezoelectric materials. However, phase formation of the BCZT is controversial and still unclear since various phase coexistences were identified in the literatures, for instances, the mixed phases of rhombohedral-tetragonal (R-T), ortho-rhombic-tetragonal (O-T) or rhombohedral-orthorhombic-tetragonal (R-O-T). Additionally, it is well known that the crystal structure plays a crucial role on the occurrence of polarization in the piezoceramics. Therefore, this work aims to investigate the coexistence of phase formation at room temperature for the BCZT powder and ceramic. Moreover, the electrical …

The Effect Of Phosphogypsum On Stabilizing Clay Soil And Improving Its Properties For Use As Foundation Soil, Mai Yahya Maaitah, Mus'ab Ziad Banat
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
Expansive soil covers large areas in a variety of regions in Jordan which is insufficient to meet the engineering specifications in construction. Phosphogypsum is considered to be the main by-product material which comes from phosphate rock deposits that is available in Jordan. The main purpose of this research is to study the effects of stabilization by phosphogypsum on expansive soil properties. Three Jordanian regions were chosen to represent the expansive soils, Irbid, Madaba, and Abu-Nusire city. Soils were mixed with phosphogypsum at different percentages by dry weight of soil. Some of the representative laboratory tests for swell properties were conducted: …

Influence Of Precursor Preparation On The Synthesis Of Boron Carbide From Glutinous Rice Flour, Kannigar Dateraksa, Sujarinee Sinchai
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
Boron carbide is a promising candidate for a variety of applications, including blasting nozzles, neutron moderators, and lightweight armor. Using of inexpensive and readily available starting materials which can react with boric acid to form B-O-C bonds, e.g., glutinous rice flour, is one of alternative means to produce high purity boron carbide powder at low temperature. In this study, boric acid and glutinous rice flour, boron and carbon sources, were used for synthesizing B4C powder by the carbothermic reduction. The mole ratios of boric acid to glutinous rice flour ranging from 1:1 to 2.5:1 were formulated and mixed by continuous …

The Effect Of Artificial Defects On The Fatigue Characteristics Of Aisi 4340 Steel, Yakov B. Unigovski, Dmitry Fishman, Liat Fishman, Liron Shichman, Ofir Moshe, Roni Shneck, Emmanuel Gutman
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
This study examined the fatigue life (Nf) and fatigue limit (FL) of AISI 4340 steel in relation to surface roughness, artificial defects and shot peening. Artificial surface defects on fatigue specimens were obtained by electrical discharge machining (EDM) or by pre-corrosion in 3.5% NaCl and perchloric acid solutions, followed by a fatigue test. The presence of artificial defects of various sizes, taken into account by the area parameter, led to a significant decrease in fatigue characteristics, while shot peening contributed to their noticeable improvement. Defects resulting from electrochemical corrosion had a much greater negative effect on fatigue …

Coal fly ash (CFA) is a powder generated during combustion of coal; its improper disposal constitutes an environmental issue. To minimize this problem, one of the uses of CFA is as feedstock for production of zeolite. Different studies have shown that zeolites may be easily obtained from CFA by relatively cheap and fast conversion processes. Most of these studies have been focused on the study of the zeolite synthesis using classical methods through changing one factor per time and fixing the other factors, where it illustrates the impact of each variable individually via a huge number of experiments, however it …

Nanotechnology uses exceptional approaches for the control of bacterial infections which uncovers the potential function of bio-systems at nano-scale level. Compared to silver ions, silver nanoparticles possess enhanced physicochemical stability and low bio-toxicity properties. The intrinsic chemical framework of silver nanoparticles is prone to exhibit a significant chemistry when used as sensor and as therapeutic. Nowadays, silver is used in (nano-) medicine, in the form of nanoparticles to optimize its therapeutic property for controlling infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria. Exclusive use of antibiotics as medicines and its discharge from the body of the infected person or animals into the sewage …

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
One-dimensional ZnO nanostructures were grown on ZnO seed layer by hydrothermal method using zinc nitrate (Zn(NO3)2) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as precursors. The concentrations of NaOH and Zn(NO3)2 were varied from 40 mM to 680 mM and kept constant, respectively. Effects of increasing the hydroxide ions on the concentration of zinc-hydroxo species in the solution were studied using thermodynamic simulation software. The simulated results showed that Zn(OH)2 and Zn(OH)3- concentrations tended to decrease but Zn(OH)42- was non-linearly increased when the concentration of NaOH at room temperature was increased. After the growth of ZnO, the samples were characterized by FESEM and …

The yield of amorphous silica has less residue of mineral content in rice husk (RH) and a high specific surface area through the simple alkaline extraction process at first, then acid precipitation of RH. At this time, the leaching process using alkali and calcination of RH is the best method to acquire amorphous silica with a high surface area. The different temperatures were used for the calcination of RH and continue with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) treatment by using different concentration. The sample titrated using hydrochloric acid (HCl) to extract silica. Pretreatment with acid leaching for the RH was also conducted …
