Experimental And Computational Bearing Strength Of Fiber Metal Laminate With And Without Film Adhesive, Christopher L. Bellanova Jr.
Experimental And Computational Bearing Strength Of Fiber Metal Laminate With And Without Film Adhesive, Christopher L. Bellanova Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
This research characterized the performance of a fiber metal laminate composed of carbon fiber and stainless steel without film adhesive and compared it to a similar, previously tested, fiber metal laminate including film adhesive. Removal of the adhesive layers reduced the localized thickness, simplified manufacturing, and allowed for a 20% increase in foil thickness. Quasi-static testing was conducted in double shear, single shear protruding, and single shear countersunk configurations. The results were compared to adhesive hybrid and control samples. To study the affects of bolt tension, samples at low torque in double shear were also tested. Progressive failure samples revealed …

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) has been used for the first time to investigate the microstructure of additively manufactured molybdenum. Despite the wide applicability of positron annihilation spectroscopy techniques to the defect analysis of metals, they have only been used sparingly to monitor the microstructural evolution of additively manufactured metals. Molybdenum and molybdenum with a dilute addition (0.1 wt%) of nano-sized silicon carbide, prepared via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) at four different scan speeds: 100, 200, 400, and 800 mm/s, were studied by PALS and compared with electron backscatter diffraction analysis. The aim of this study was to clarify …

Adiabatic Shear Banding In Nickel And Nickel-Based Superalloys: A Review, Russell A. Rowe, Paul G. Allison, Anthony N. Palazotto, Keivan Davami
Faculty Publications
This review paper discusses the formation and propagation of adiabatic shear bands in nickel-based superalloys. The formation of adiabatic shear bands (ASBs) is a unique dynamic phenomenon that typically precedes catastrophic, unpredicted failure in many metals under impact or ballistic loading. ASBs are thin regions that undergo substantial plastic shear strain and material softening due to the thermo-mechanical instability induced by the competitive work hardening and thermal softening processes. Dynamic recrystallization of the material’s microstructure in the shear region can occur and encourages shear localization and the formation of ASBs. Phase transformations are also often seen in ASBs of ferrous …

Optimizing Switching Of Non-Linear Properties With Hyperbolic Metamaterials, James A. Ethridge, John G. Jones, Manuel R. Ferdinandus, Michael J. Havrilla, Michael A. Marciniak
Faculty Publications
Hyperbolic metamaterials have been demonstrated to have special potential in their linear response, but the extent of their non-linear response has not been extensively modeled or measured. In this work, novel non-linear behavior of an ITO/SiO2 layered hyperbolic metamaterial is modeled and experimentally confirmed, specifically a change in the sign of the non-linear absorption with intensity. This behavior is tunable and can be achieved with a simple one-dimensional layered design. Fabrication was performed with physical vapor deposition, and measurements were conducted using the Z-scan technique. Potential applications include tunable optical switches, optical limiters, and tunable components of laser sources.

Oxygen Vacancies In Lib3O5 Crystals And Their Role In Nonlinear Absorption, Brian C. Holloway, Christopher A. Lenyk, Timothy D. Gustafson, Nancy C. Giles
Faculty Publications
LiB3O5 (LBO) crystals are used to generate the second, third, and fourth harmonics of near-infrared solid-state lasers. At high power levels, the material’s performance is adversely affected by nonlinear absorption. We show that as-grown crystals contain oxygen and lithium vacancies. Transient absorption bands are formed when these intrinsic defects serve as traps for “free” electrons and holes created by x rays or by three- and four-photon absorption processes. Trapped electrons introduce a band near 300 nm and trapped holes produce bands in the 500-600 nm region. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is used to identify and characterize the …

Analysis Of Microscopic Carbon Fiber Fragments, Zachary R. Scott
Analysis Of Microscopic Carbon Fiber Fragments, Zachary R. Scott
Theses and Dissertations
Carbon Fiber (CF) has different tensile strengths and transverse moduli depending on how they are fabricated. Some CF is export controlled as it can be used for weapons, spacecraft, or gas centrifuges for enriching nuclear fuel. This research project explored a new way to prepare micron sized single CF threads to measure their transverse modulus and compare the moduli of non-export controlled CF to that of an export controlled CF. Five total polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers were used in this project, one of which was an export controlled fiber.
Towards The Integration Of Ferroelectric Negative Capacitance With Gallium Oxide Semiconductors For High Power Applications, Guillermo A. Salcedo
Towards The Integration Of Ferroelectric Negative Capacitance With Gallium Oxide Semiconductors For High Power Applications, Guillermo A. Salcedo
Theses and Dissertations
Gallium oxide is a relatively new semiconductor material with characteristics auspicious for high frequency and high-voltage applications. Although several research groups have already demonstrated radio-frequency (RF) devices on Ga2O3 with remarkable features, there is still room for improvement. For instance, the operating frequency of RF field-effect transistors (FET) decreases with the parasitic capacitance, which can be counteracted by higher gate capacitance. Implementing ferroelectric dielectrics with suitable parameters in Ga2O3 FET promises to enhance the gate capacitance and therefore increase operating frequency. This work investigated the effect of various factors (film composition, film thickness, TiN …

Formulation And Characterization Of Fast-Curing Plastic Scintillators With High-Z Loading, Theodore W. Stephens
Theses and Dissertations
Development of novel fast-curing plastic scintillators is highly advantageous due to their potential to be manufactured via 3D printing. Several formulations were developed that exhibit enhanced photon sensitivity, producing modest but discernible photopeaks at an incident gamma energy of 122 keV. The photon sensitivity is achieved via bismuth high-Z loading; however, this practice typically results in diminished light yields. Subsequent formulations, which varied the photoinitiator concentration and curing time, demonstrated successful curing with sufficient plastic hardness, reduced purple discoloration, reduced heat buildup during curing, and resulted in less cracking during the curing process, all of which were correlated with lower …

Static Fatigue Of Hi-Nicalon S Fiber Tows At 500°C In Air And In Silicic Acid-Saturated Steam, Richard J. Reinink
Theses and Dissertations
Recent developments in aerospace propulsion systems, along with emerging interest in hypersonic air vehicles has emphasized the need for materials which can withstand extreme service environments. The leading candidates for the structural components expected to operate in these environments are SiC-based ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). When a CMC component is subjected to thermomechanical loads in an aggressive environment during service, surface cracks form. As steam penetrates cracks in the SiC matrix, it becomes saturated with silicic acid, (SI(OH)4) and attacks the SiC fibers. The interaction between the Hi-Nicalon™ S SiC fibers and the (SI(OH)4)-saturated steam is …
