Cretaceous sediments in Montana record events during a period of unusual geologic interest. After a long period of extensive submergence of the area during Jurassic time, came a period of varying continental and marine deposition with consequent variations in the types of sediments laid down. A study of these variations, their extent, and their cause has been the primary object of this thesis.

The intensive postwar search for new petroleum horizons has resulted in widespread prospecting in the northern Great Plains. No commercial production has as yet been derived from Ordovician or Devonian rocks in Montana, but the relatively few tests that have penetrated to critical depths have disclosed encouraging conditions which merit further consideration, especially in Devonian strata.

Sometime prior to 1870, a group of prospectors made what was believed to be a "rich strike' on one of the tributaries of Prickly Pear Creek in Jefferson County, Montana. Instead of striking it rich, they had uncovered a native copper deposit, worthless to them because of its limited extent and remote location, but now of much interest to the geologist, and to the mining engineer because of its possible commercial value.

Iron was electro-deposited from a ferrous chloride bath. Studies were made of deposits formed when current density was varied, and finally when both current density and temperature were changed. An attempt was made to lay the ground work for a long range study of the chloride bath, and to determine the most simple conditions possible for obtaining a smooth, even, and thick deposit.

The five counties discussed in this paper compose the northernmost and westernmost counties in Montana. On the eastern boundary are Glacier National Park and the Continental Divide; on the southern boundary are Missoula and Powell counties; Idaho lies on the southwestern and western side; and the Canadian border lies along the northern edge. The region is on the Pacific Ocean side of the Rocky Mountains. Three major rivers, the Clark Fork, the Flathead, and the Kootenai drain this area into the Columbia River.

"A thesis giving the details of construction of a rotating induction furnace and its use to experimentally determine the amounts of copper absorbed in high-iron and low-iron slags at various temperatures. A rotating induction furnace is advantageous for slag study in that the slag is contained in a molten pure metal cup and does not come in contact with any refractory, which would be attacked by the slag and contaminate it. "The Bureau of Mines in conjunction with their Electrolytic Manganese Alloys program has developed a series of age hardening copper-manganese-nickel alloys having properties which compare favorably with those of copper-beryllium alloys...An unusual and highly desirable characteristic of these alloys is their insensitiveness to rate of cooling from the solution temperature. Air cooled and water quenched samples will have identical time hardness curves on being aged. Instead of requiring closely controlled conditions characteristic of many age hardening alloys, these alloys cannot be subjected to a thermal mechanical handling which will prevent hardening on their being subsequently heated to the aging temperature. …

"There is no satisfactory method of concentrating the finely disseminated oxide ores of zinc. Gravity methods of concentrating such ores may be used for coarsely crystalline materials in which the zinc material is free at approximately 10- to 35-mesh or coarser. In addition, gravity methods of concentration do not give a satisfactory separation on those ores in which the gangue mineral is small. As a result there is need for a method of beneficiating various deposits of oxidized zinc ores. A determination of the solubility of zinc ethyl xanthate was attempted by measuring the refractive index of a saturated solution of that salt. The small increment in refractive index effected by adding zinc ethyl xanthate to water in saturation quantities rendered measurements difficult and of dubious accuracy.
