"The element titanium has a high degree of chemical activity at room temperature when in a finely divided condition. In the massive state this activity is only exhibited at high temperatures. The powdered metal is highly pyrophoric. Titanium forms quite stable sulphides and carbides, although these are subject to oxidation at high temperatures. It also form nitrides. Titanium being a transitional element forms hydrides with hydrogen which are stable at ordinary temperatures, but which dissociate at red heat liberating the hydrogen and leaving the metallic titanium in a very active state. "The 'tungsten bronzes are a series of anionic substitutional solid solutions of alkali or alkaline earth metal metatungstates and tungstic oxide. They are neither alloys or intermetallic compounds, the term "tungsten bronzes" was adopted because of their remarkable metallic properties -- e.g., high electrical conductivity, metallic luster on the crystal, and high specific gravity. "The purpose of this research was to investigate the possibility of producing the multicarbides of tungsten and titanium from a tungsten oxide-titanium hydride-carbon mixture. It appears to be worthwhile to carry out the reduction, carburization, and pre-alloying in one process, i.e. reducing tungsten oxide with the dissociated hydrogen from titanium hydride and the added carbon; then carburizing the reduced tungsten metal and dissociated titanium metal; at last, pre-alloying the mixture of TiC and WC. The use of Pidgeon and the carbothermic processes for the production of magnesium during the war forced a perfection of both equipments and techniques for high vacuum operations. Imports of manganese ore probably supply a major proportion of the needs of the United States. Domestic production is reported to be higher than pre-war levels, but does not equal that of the peak production year of 1943. In 1946, the Anaconda Copper Mining Company accounted for 90 percent of the total shipments of manganese nodules, and this company is the largest producer of domestic metallurgical ore in the United States.

Karst Kamp, a southwestern Montana recreation resort, is 32 road miles south of Bozeman on the east bank of the Gallatin River in a narrow V-shaped valley flanked on the west by the rugged Madison mountain range and on the east by the equally rough Gallatin range. The asbestos deposit itself lies approximately one-half mile northwest of the ranch on a heavily timbered "Alpine-like" slope nearly 1200 feet above the floor of the valley.

The Salt Chuck, Rush and Brown, and adjacent mines and claims form an area of approximately 15 square miles near the head of Kasaan Bay about 10 miles northwest of the village of Kasaan on Prince of Wales Island in southeastern Alaska. It is an area of moderate relief in which the hills rise from the water’s edge to heights of some 500 feet. Most of the area is covered with dense vegetation and muskeg.

The United States, although the leading consumer of chromite, depends almost entirely on imports for its supply. Domestic production of chromite is limited, because high-grade imported ore is plentiful and inexpensive in normal times. There are several large deposits of chromite in the United States, representing millions of tons of low grade ore. The object of casehardening is to produce articles of steel having a tough or ductile interior and a hard surface.
