Clear glasses form in the system Ag2O‐B2O3 up to about 35 mol% (65 wt%) Ag2O. Infrared absorption, thermal expansion, and density data indicated an analogy to the Na2O‐B2O3 system. Pentaborate‐triborate group pairs appear to be formed on addition of Ag2O to B2O3 up to 20 mol% Ag2O and diborate groups from 20 to 33 mol% Ag2O. This interpretation is supported by the comparison of the infrared absorption spectra of quenched and crystallized glasses. One crystallization product, Ag2O‐4B2O3, was …

Thermal expansion of Pb3O4 was investigated by high‐temperature X‐ray diffraction. The coefficient in the a0 direction is 14.6x10−6/°C. Expansion in the c0 direction is 32% greater, with a coefficient of 19.3x10−6/°C. "Thermal expansion and the Pm3m t Fm3m transition of cesium chloride have been studied with high temperature diffractometry, differential thermal analysis, and heating and quenching techniques. The onset temperature of the transition in pure CsCl, on heating, is 471ºC. There are no observable premonitory effects below the transition temperature and no apparent structural relationships between the polymorphs is apparent. Both phases coexist over a 20º to 50ºC temperature range and equilibrium thermal hysteresis occurs on heating and cooling. Hysteresis behavior is explained by addition of strain energy parameters to the free energy function. Initiation of the Pm3m t Fm3m transformation …

"This study was concerned with the evaluation of a high temperature gas pycnometer, used in conjunction with a cation isotopic substitution technique, for determining the stoichiometry of materials. Three methods were investigated for determining the correction factors for the thermal gradient effects in the gas pycnometer. The correction factors were shown to be dependent on the temperature, the sample volume, and the height of the sample in the sample chamber. Under the conditions of these experiments, the correction factors were shown to be essentially independent of sample grain size and pycnometer atmosphere. "The effect of oxygen activity on the sintering of Cr₂O₃ with minor additions of MgO, and of MgO with minor additions of Cr₂O₃ at 1600ºC was investigated. A peak density (99.4% of theoretical) was obtained for high purity Cr₂O₃ by maintaining the equilibrium oxygen partial pressure needed to maintain the Cr₂O₃ phase. The addition of 0.1 wt. % MgO increased the sintered density at the same oxygen pressure to 99.8%. Further MgO additions decreased the density. The density of pure MgO was independent of the PO₂ over the range investigated. Addition of Cr₂O₃ to MgO decreased the density at …

"Internal friction and sodium and potassium self-diffusion coefficients for (1-X)Na₂O · XK₂O· 3SiO₂ glasses were measured. Alkali diffusion was measured between 300 and 500ºC using radioactive isotopes and a thin-sectioning technique. Internal friction was measured from room temperature to 500ºC, 0.1 to 2000 Hz. Comparison between alkali diffusion and internal friction data for Na-K glasses with those for other mixed-alkali glasses shows that the mixed-alkali peak is related to alkali mobility. It is concluded that the mechanism for mixed-alkali internal friction is a cooperative rearrangement of dissimilar alkali ions, with the slower moving ion controlling the rate of reorientation"--Abstract, page …

"Compressive creep measurements were made on two groups of mullites at temperatures between 1455ºC and 1520ºC. The first group consisted of commercially manufactured mullites. The second group was made up of 7 different mullite compositions spanning the alumina-silica solid solution range from 3Al₂O₃ • 2SiO₂ to 2Al₂O₃ • SiO₂ . Thermal activation energies and stress exponents were calculated for the mullites in the second group. Steady state strain rates taken at 1460ºC under loads of 100 and 110 psi varied between 1.3x10⁻⁴ in/in/hr and 15.4x10⁻⁴ in/in/hr. Activation energies were between 109 Kcal/mole and 204 Kcal/mole. "Li₂O•Al₂O₂•2SiO₂ glass fibers were ion-exchanged from 1 to 300 minutes in a sodium nitrate bath at 366ºC. The internal friction was measured along with the lithium and sodium concentration profiles. As sodium progressively replaced lithium, the alkali internal friction peak became smaller while a new peak (mixed alkali peak) appeared and increased in magnitude. These changes in the internal friction are similar to those that occur upon the addition of a second alkali to glasses prepared by conventional melting. The magnitude of both internal friction peaks in ion exchanged glasses was dependent on the overall glass composition. The magnitude of …

"A model developed to predict adsorbate-induced work-function changes for thermionic emitters is shown here to apply to a more general class of electron emission phenomena and a much broader range of adsorbates. This model predicts that chemically, vapor-deposited boron will increase the work function of a clean tungsten substrate at coverages between 0 and 1 monolayer. This is the first time that a single model has been shown to predict both positive and negative work function changes for different adsorbates. Phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties of the system CaO-FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2 were studied at 1450° and 1550°C, over a range of pO2 from 1 to about 10-11 atm. Isothermal phase diagrams and activity-composition diagrams were constructed for 0, 5, 10, 20, and 30 wt pct SiO2 sections. "The system Al₂O₃-TeO₂-O₂ has been investigated by X-ray diffraction and differential thermal analysis in air and in sealed silica ampoules. The tellurate, Al₂TeO₆, with tellurium in the +6 valence state, forms in air but not in vacuum at 1 mm pressure. A second phase, a tellurite, possibly Al₂Te₂O₇, forms in air or vacuum by devitrification. The glass-forming region is wider than previously stated and is more extensive in vacuum--from 50% to 98% TeO₂. Tentative phase boundaries have been placed for the system in air and vacuum"--Abstract, page ii.

Thermal expansion of tetragonal PbO, investigated by high‐temperature X‐ray diffraction in vacuum, is nearly isotropic, with the coefficient in the c0 direction only slightly greater than that in the a0 direction. Volume thermal expansion is only slightly greater than in massicot. Retardation of the litharge‐massicot transformation is tentatively interpreted as the result of very low oxygen partial pressures caused by catastrophic oxidation of the stainless‐steel sample holder and resulting oxygen scavenging by lead vapor. Thermal expansion of orthorhombic PbO was investigated by high‐temperature X‐ray diffraction. The coefficients in the a0, and c0 directions are equal and Pb–O chains extended in the a0 direction and bonded into layers in the b0 direction; appreciable Pb–Pb bonding is indicated. Coordination and bond distances observed in PbSiO3 and lead silicate glasses, which are similar to those of massicot, and PbnOn polymeric units reported in PbO vapor are interpreted as additional evidence of the importance of PbO chains as structural entities. "Values of fracture surface energy were measured for steatite, zircon, mullite and four densities of alumina. Rods of these high density materials were cut into thin rectangular specimens which were notched and broken in three-point loading. The resulting load necessary for fracture of the specimens was used to calculate the fracture surface energy of the materials. The value for the steatite was around 20,000 ergs/cm². The values for the zircon and mullite were on the order of 13,000 ergs/cm², and the values for the aluminas ranged from 17,000 to 24,000 ergs/cm²"--Abstract, page ii.

"Glasses of various compositions in the Na₂O-SiO₂ system were prepared with different levels of OH concentration. Phase separation kinetics, thermal expansion, radiation induced optical absorption, and internal friction of these glasses were studied. The increase in OH content in these glasses was found to (a) enhance the rate of phase separation; (b) increase thermal expansion above the glass temperature and change the dilatometric softening temperature in a way that depends on microstructure; (c) increase the radiation induced optical absorption bands associated with positive hole centers and decrease those associated with electron trap centers; and, (d) decrease the low temperature alkali …

"The distribution of relaxation times for the alkali peak in a Li₂ O·A1₂O₃ ·2.0SiO₂ glass and for the mixed alkali peak in a 0.5Li₂O·0.5Na₂O·A1₂O₃·2.OSiO₂ glass was studied using the internal friction technique. A lognormal distribution of relaxation times provided the best agreement with the experimental data. The ß parameter of the lognormal distribution function, which is related to the half-height peak width, varied with temperature, indicating that the distribution of relaxation times is dependent upon the activation energy and the activation entropy of the relaxation mechanism. The major contributor to the distribution of relaxation times is a wide distribution in …

"The internal friction and self diffusion coefficients of sodium and rubidium ions for (1 - X) Na₂O·X Rb₂O·3 SiO₂ glasses have been measured. The diffusion measurements employed radioactive isotopes and a thin sectioning technique and extended from 350 to 500°C. Internal friction measurements were made from -150 to 500°C and at frequencies of 0.05 to 6000 Hz. The maximum height for the mixed alkali internal friction peak occurs at the composition where the sodium and rubidium diffusion coefficients are equal. "The large internal friction peak observed in a 10Li₂O·10Na₂O·80SiO₂ glass was studied as a function of the degree of phase separation. Transmission electron microscopy was used to evaluate the type and degree of phase separation. No observable changes in the temperature position or height of the internal friction peak were observed at successive stages of phase separation. Phase separation of a mixed alkali borosilicate glass also produced no changes in the internal friction peaks. Phase separation is not considered responsible for the large internal friction peak observed in mixed alkali glasses"--Abstract, page ii.

"The transformation of a synthetic mica composition K₂Mg₅Si₈O₂₀F₄ from amorphous to crystalline structure was studied isothermally at selected temperatures from 560°C to 1150°C. thermal changes associated with the transformation were followed by differential thermal analysis techniques. Structural changes promoted by the isothermal treatments were observed by density measurements, Debye-Scherrer X-ray diffraction techniques, electron replication microscopy, and electron scanning microscopy. Isothermal treatment at 450°C for 9 hours produces structural ordering in quenched K₂Mg₅Si₈O₂₀F₄ glass. Fluorine exerts a significant influence on the transformation temperature; decreasing amounts of fluorine producing increasing transformation temperatures. "The traditional approach to thermal shock testing in brittle materials has been to determine the temperature difference required to nucleate cracks in these materials. Recent work has indicated that the degree of damage after crack nucleation should be an additional consideration. The degree of damage resulting from cooling thermal shocks has been the primary consideration of the present work. Test specimens of two geometries: long, solid rods and short, solid cylinders were quenched from selected temperatures into ice water. "The microstructure and mineralogical composition of direct bonded, 50 wt.% magnesia - 50 wt.% chrome ore refractory compositions containing controlled additions of silica were correlated with their compressive creep behavior in the temperature range 1450⁰ to 1550⁰C under stresses of 100 to 175 psi. Steady state creep rates were determined from the linear regression of the steady state regions of deformation on time. Apparent activation energies and deformation flow characteristics were determined from the temperature and stress dependence of the steady state creep rates. Silica contents up to 3.5 wt.% increased the amount of direct intergranular bonding which decreased the …

"The decomposition rate of strontium carbonate (SrC0₃) was measured using a TGA apparatus. It was found to deviate slightly from zero order classical reaction. The rate of formation of strontium zirconate (SrZr0₃) from zirconium oxide (ZrO₂) and strontium oxide (SrO) in the form of the decomposition product of SrCO₃ was measured using quantitative x-ray diffraction for mineralogical analysis. It was found to most nearly follow the Zhuravlev-Lesokhin-Tempel' man rate equation. "The valence state and coordination site of the transition-metal ion, chromium, was investigated in a MgO host lattice. The chromium ion incorporated into poly-crystalline MgO by quenching from elevated temperatures allowed investigation of a single crystalline phase, MgO-solid solution (ss). The chromium ion was confirmed to occur in the trivalent state and to occupy octahedral cation sites in the MgO lattice by the use of optical reflectance spectroscopy. "This study was concerned with the sinterability of Cr₂C₃ powders produced by the calcination of a Cr(OH)₃ gel. The decomposition of the gel was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray analysis and microscopic examination. Comparison was made between the size of crystallites as determined by X-ray line broadening and the size of aggregated particles as determined by independent means. These lineal measurements were compared to surface area measurements on the calcined powders. "The deformation of refractory materials consisting of 90% sintered or fused alumina plus 10% silica was measured at temperatures from 1450 to 1515⁰C and a compressive stress of 100 psi. Creep rates and activation energies were determined from the steady state portion of deformation vs. time data and correlated with the mineralogical composition. "Four levels of particle size distribution and four compositions of feldspar ranging from high-potash to high-soda content were evaluated in their effect on body and surface defects and selected engineering properties of an electrical porcelain. It was found that surface blistering defects occurred at a high incidence in porcelain specimens slightly overfired at 1225⁰C in a body composition containing 33% albite (soda), 67% high-potash feldspar blend and a relatively coarse, 140 mesh grind, of the feldspar. The occurrence of surface and volume blisters was correlated with the formation of a microscopic bleb structure in the porcelain matrix. It was also …

"Knudsen effusion experiments were carried out on CdO in fused silica crucibles at temperatures of 918°K, 1008°K with orifice areas from 2.742x10-3 cm2 to 30.52x10-2 cm2. The experiments were made in a molybdenum-wire, resistance-heated vacuum furnace. Several orifice areas were used at each temperature and reciprocal pressure versus orifice area plots were made.
