Detailed X-ray powder data for MgBr2·6H2O were obtained by diffractometry by use of CuKα radiation at 22°C. The data were indexed on a bimolecular monoclinic unit cell, space group C2/m, with a = 10.290 ± 0.001 Å; b = 7.334 ± 0.001 Å; C = 6.211 ± 0.001 Å; β = 93° 25′ ± 10′. Calculated density was 2.074 g/cm3, compared with a measured density of 2.07 ± 0.01 g/cm3. © 1974, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.

Knudsen Effusion Study Of The Vaporization Of Cdo(S), R. Tom Coyle, Gordon Lewis

Knudsen effusion studies were conducted on CdO(s) in fused‐SiO2 Knudsen cells from 889 to 1110 K. The orifice size was varied; the largest cell orifice yielded a calculated pressure significantly lower than could be accounted for by experimental error. Average‐slope‐ and average‐free‐energy‐function‐based values of ΔHc298 were 86.9 ± 1.1 and 88.8 ± 0.5 kcal/mol, respectively. The data from the present work were combined with those of previous investigators using a method discussed by McCreary and Thorn; a ΔHc298 of 88.2 ± 0.2 kcal/mol was obtained. "Thermal expansion and transformations of K2SO4, K2CrO4, K2MoO4, and K2WO4 were studied by high temperature diffractometry, differential thermal analysis, and dilatometry. K2SO4 and K2CrO4 transform from an orthorhombic to a hexagonal structure at 580°C and 670°C respectively, with initiation of the transformation probably related to increased amplitude of S-O tetrahedral vibrations. Boron has been adsorbed onto molybdenum field emitter surfaces by the thermal decomposition of boron triiodide at corrected partial pressures of 1.4 x 10-9 Torr to 4.5 x 10-9 Torr. Based on field emission work function data and an analytical work function versus adsorbate-coverage relationship, a quantitative measure of the monolayer coverage of boron on molybdenum has been determined; this value is 6.3 x 1014 atoms/cm2/monolayer. A parameter, β, is defined which is a measure of the effective yield of adsorbed boron on molyb-denum from BI3. β is formulated in terms of the free energy of dissociation of the BI3 …

A simple diode ion source has been developed for direct observation in a mass spectrometer of the positive ions created in an operating diode. The ionic species accelerated toward the cathode were identified. The shape of the peak displayed in the spectrum is related to the region of the diode in which the ions were formed. Variation of experimental parameters, including the composition of the background gases, indicated that the characteristic shapes of the peaks can be related to space charge in the diode. "The effect of dissolved water on borate glasses containing 4-20 mol % Ag2O was investigated. Water was dissolved in the glasses by bubbling with a carrier gas (oxygen) containing different partial pressures of water vapor. A minimum in water solubility was found at 11 mol % Ag2O. Water contents in excess of 0.5 mol % H2O did not have a great effect on the transition temperature or the dilatometric softening point. Below 15 mol % Ag2O, the water content had no effect on the thermal expansion coefficients. Beyond 15 mol % Ag …

"The use of the tensi-volumetric apparatus to study the non-stoichiometric behavior of strontium titanate was discussed. Oxidation kinetics of reduced single crystal strontium titanate were measured with an ultrasensitive capacitance manometer as the sample absorbed oxygen in response to a changing oxygen activity.

"Apparatus to synthesize and dope high purity, optical quality fused silica by flame hydrolysis was constructed. Fused silica samples containing 0, <35, 35 and 90 ppm niobium were synthesized and characterized by the following properties: purity, refractive index, radiation damage resistance, and transmission spectra. The properties of the undoped sample were shown to be comparable to those of available commercial fused silica. Deviations in the properties of the doped samples from those of the undoped samples were explained in terms of the niobium content"--Abstract, page ii.

"Thermal expansion and phase transformations in CaF2, BaF2, SrCl2, and BaCl2 were studied by high temperature x-ray diffractometry, differential thermal analysis, and thermodilatometric analysis. Thermal expansion characteristics of CaF2, BaF2 and SrCl2 are very similar. The structures expand normally at lower temperatures and depart substantially from linearity at higher temperatures, because of formation of defects and disordering of anions. At high temperatures CaF2 and BaF2 react with water vapor, even at low humidities, forming oxides and emitting HF, leading to difficulty in observation of phase transformations. SrCl …

The introduction of Ag in SiAsTe glasses permits the incorporation of Se, otherwise volatile and/or degradable as a constituent in Si-containing chalcogenide glasses. SiAsAgTeSe glasses exhibit much higher softening ranges and glass transition temperatures than encountered in known chalgogenide systems. A glass Si35As15Ag10Te20Se20 had the viscosity log ν = 13 at about 500°C, as compared to 370°C for the base glass Si35As25Te40, the viscosity of log ν = 9.8 at about 560°C, as compared to 442°C for the base glass. Phase separation occurs in the system SiAsAgTeSe and becomes manifest in two glass transitions indicated by changes in the slopes …

Isothermal oxidation of tetragonal PbO in air produced multiphase assemblages with apparent equilibrium compositions which varied linearly with temperature from PbO1.548 at 286°C to PbO1.333 at 351°C. Oxidation at each temperature was relatively rapid to PbO1.40 and very slow from PbO1.40 to apparent equilibrium values. Pseudocubic PbO1+x, with compositions between PbO1.41 and PbO1.57, was indexed on a cubic unit cell at the lower O/Pb ratios and on a tetragonal unit cell at the higher ratios. Linear changes in lattice parameters and deviation from cubic symmetry accompanied reversible oxidation and reduction of the phase. Pseudocubic PbO1+x was reduced irreversibly to Pb3O4 …

Formation of Ni-ferrite, Mn-ferrite, NiZn-ferrite, Zn-ferrite and Mg-ferrite have been investigated using X-ray diffraction analysis. Jander's diffusion equation described the data from these investigations over a portion of the temperature ranges studied. However, the reaction mechanisms and sequences involved in the formation of mixed ferrites have not been well defined in the literature. "A Mexican clay, intended to be used as refractory raw material, was identified. Problems encountered in the characterization of halloysitic clays are discussed and emphasis is made on the use of the electron microscope (scanning or transmission type) as a definite evidence of the existence of halloysite due to its unique morphology within the kaolinite group of clay minerals.

Beneficiation of this particular clay was carried out on a small scale hydrocyclone equipment and the results are discussed.

"The effect of minor additions of CaO dopant to a manganese zinc ferrite – Zn.25Mn.75 Fe2.17 O4.0 - on its grain growth and densification kinetics in air at 1250°C., 1300°C., and 1350°C. was studied. Grain growth was controlled over a range of dopant levels. At a sintering temperature of 1350°C. and time of six hours a ferrite with the smallest dopant addition was sintered to the highest density - 98% of theoretical. Under the same sintering conditions ferrites with higher dopant levels also sintered with normal growth but sintered to lower densities.

"Strength degradation and crack propagation in Al2O3 are shown to depend on the initial strength and porosity of the material. Specimens were fabricated containing between 0 and 5% induced cylindrical, two dimensional, and spherical porosity. The strengths of the various porosity samples decreased discontinuously at a critical quenching temperature. No difference was observed in the critical temperature for the various aluminas; initial strength decrease occurred between 165°C and 175°C temperature differential. The strength retained after thermal shock decreased with increasing initial strength. The degree of damage sustained upon shocking was also characterized by crack density and crack …

"A study of the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of boron from boron triiodide (BI3) on molybdenum has been done with field emission microscopy (FEM) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED).

A correlation of the efficiency by which BI3 is effectively dissociated to form adsorbed boron, and the temperature of the substrate has been shown through work function measurements on the boron covered molybdenum field emitter surfaces. The boron-induced work function change of molybdenum has been shown to be in agreement with a theoretical model which predicts positive, as well as negative work functions for adsorbate-substrate systems. "Thermal expansion, thermal hysteresis, and the monoclinic tetragonal phase transformation of ZrO₂ have been studied with high temperature x-ray diffractometry. The initial transformation temperature in pure ZrO₂, on heating, is about 1150ºC. The transformation occurs over a 100ºC temperature range and thermal hysteresis occurs on heating and cooling. The mechanism of the transformation is related to preferred vibrational modes of atoms on the AO -CO plane of the monoclinic structure. Because the monoclinic BO axis is parallel with the tetragonal [110] axis, structural relationships can be seen to be a controlling factor in the transformation. Initiation of …

"Simple diodes were constructed utilizing oxide cathodes and nickel anodes. The cathodes were obtained by applying a mixture of barium, strontium, and calcium carbonates to a nickel filament and decomposing them to yield the oxides. The products of decomposition were analyzed by monitoring the composition of the background gases in the vacuum chamber. A portion of the flux of positive ions bombarding the cathode during diode operation was analyzed. "X-ray intensity and d-spacing measurements were performed upon samples in the system Li₂O-SiO₂. Samples ranged from 0.0 to 28.0 mole percent lithia and were fired for 72 hours at temperatures from 920ºC to 1400ºC. Atomic absorption analyses were made upon the fired samples. Non-equilibrium conditions were prevalent and results are inclusive. Quartz is the stable phase in the high silica field at temperatures below 1050ºC with cristobalite stable above that. The quartz - cristobalite transformation occurs at 950ºC with the cristobalite transforming into tridymite at 1010ºC. There was wide scattering of data at 1000ºC and below. There was no correlation …

"The development of the tensi-volumetric apparatus has been traced to its current position of significance in studies relating to oxide non-stoichiometry. Components of the tensi-volumetric apparatus, especially the capacitance membrane manometer, were examined in detail as were the parameters affecting the performance of such an apparatus. Based on a careful consideration of components and performance, a tensi-volumetric apparatus has been designed, built, and its operation theoretically justified for its particular physical configuration. "The formation sequence of (Cd,Mn,Fe) (Mn,Fe)₂O₄ from the individual oxides,x CdO + (1-x) MnCO₃ + α-Fe₂O₃,was found by X-Ray diffraction. Cd(Mn,Fe)₂O₄ was formed completely from CdO·Fe₂O₃ and CdO·Fe₂O₄ at 900°C and reacted with MnFe₂O₄ for 0 < x < 0.5 and with α-Fe₂O₃ for 0.5 < x < 1.0 to form a single phase of (Cd,Mn,Fe) (Mn,Fe)₂O₄ at 1150°C. This is the first time that the details involved in the formation sequence of CdMn-ferrite have been shown. A mixture of 0.5 CdO + 0.5 MnCO₃ + α-Fe₂O₃ was calcined at 900°C for 2 hrs forming Cd(Mn,Fe)₂O₄ with no Cd present in the other phases. Sintering was accomplished at 1150°C for 30 minutes forming a single phase of Cd₀.₅Mn₀.₅Fe₂O₄ with a bulk sintered density of 98-99% of the X-Ray density. The rate of changing density followed the relationship, p = K ln t + c, at temperatures between 1050°C and 1300°C. Magnetic properties of CdₓMn₁₋ₓFe₂O₄ were affected by composition x. A relationship, B = gx + h, was found between maximum magnetic flux density B and composition x at room temperature for 0 <̲ x <̲ 0.3. This was rationalized by a modification of Néel's theory. The maximum magnetic flux density decreased with increasing cadmium concentration for 0.3 < x <̲ 0.5. This decrease was attributed to the changing direction of the magnetic moment in the octahedral site sub-lattice according to the superexchange theory. No magnetic properties were observed due to the formation of a compensated antiferromagnetic phase for 0.5 < x <̲ 1.0. Maximum magnetic flux density increased with bulk density, while the coercive force decreased with the grain growth and the initial permeability increased with the bulk density and grain size. A stator core used for a-c electric motor application was formed by pre-sintering at 900⁰C for 2 hrs. Slots were then sawed with a tungsten carbide blade and final sintering was accomplished at 1150⁰C for 1 hr"--Abstract, pages iii-iv.

"Relative intensity measurements of X-ray powder diffraction lines were made of compositions in the region ZrTe₀.₅ to ZrTe₂.₀, fired between 600º and 817ºC in evacuated sealed tubes. The experimental relative intensities of samples between ZrTe and ZrTe₂ were compared with values calculated for several theoretical models with different Zr vacancy ordering schemes and Te vacancy concentrations. The most probable structural model for compositions in the range ZrTe to ZrTe₁.₅ is one in which the number of Zr vacancies located at z = 0 ranges from 0% to 30%, with the concentration of Te vacancies ranging from 0 to 35%.
