The issue is derived from ballistic erosion as it relates to nanoparticle production and respiration of these particles as a health concern ballistic erosion and ballistic erosion as it relates to railgun performance. A common thread between these two issues is dynamic recrystallization (DRX). DRX has been demonstrated to be the dominant mechanism for solid-state flow associated with ballistic projectile/target penetration and interaction, friction-stir welding phenomena, and other high-strain rate deformation phenomena.

The fabrication of Cu components were first built by additive manufacturing using electron beam melting (EBM) from low-purity, atomized Cu powder containing a high density of Cu2O precipitates leading to a novel example of precipitate-dislocation architecture. These microstructures exhibit cell-like arrays (1-3µm) in the horizontal reference plane perpendicular to the build direction with columnar-like arrays extending from ~12 to >60 µm in length and corresponding spatial dimensions of 1-3 µm. These observations were observed by the use of optical metallography, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Self-reacting friction stir welding is the latest FSW tool configuration developed, it employs two shoulders--one on top and one on the bottom of the workpiece-- this tool configuration offers many advantages over conventional welding techniques. However, the current lack of information and specifications limits its understanding and application. Nb-based alloys are of particular interest to replace the current Ni-based superalloys for high-temperature structural applications. One important limitation to improve the efficiency of gas-turbine engines is the temperature limit of current materials being used. The oxidation response of various niobium based refractory alloys from the Nb-Mo-Si-B-X alloy system has been examined at temperatures between 700 and 1400°C in air. The development of these alloys was part of an ongoing effort to develop and discover a new materials system capable of replacing nickel based super alloys. Additions of titanium were found to provide limited oxidation resistance. A discontinuous layer of TiO2 was observed to from at temperatures above 1100°C. An Ab-Initio Study Of The Elastic Properties Of Important Group Iv Diborides At High Temperatures, Manny Gonzales

Presented is an ab-initio Molecular Dynamics (MD) study, employing the Density Functional Theory (DFT), of the lattice parameter, thermal expansion coefficients and elastic constants of ZrB2, TiB2 and HfB2 as a function of temperature. The MD trajectories provide the equilibrium lattice parameters at finite temperatures, and the gradient of the energy from these equilibrium solutions is then used to calculate the components of the stiffness tensor. The results for ZrB2 are shown to agree well with reported experimental results for the lattice parameters and elastic constants as a function of temperature.

Computer simulations have been in use for decades in the modeling of hypervelocity impacts and general large deformation problems. Several computer codes have been developed to simulate this type of problems under a variety of geometric configurations and for any number of materials. These codes make use of several constitutive material models to simulate the response of the material under a variety of thermo-mechanical conditions. The processing of ZrB2-ZrC-ZrxSiy composite by reactive metal penetration was investigated as a successor to the ZrB2-SiC composites for hypersonic vehicles application, which cannot be used for extended time at temperatures greater than 1600C due to formation of SiO and CO gases. Zirconium (Zr), zirconium disilicide (ZrSi2), and boron carbide (B4C) were reacted in graphite crucibles for 60, 120, 180, and 240 minutes. Microscopy and x-ray diffraction (XRD) deduced the formation of a heterogeneous microstructure of ZrB2-ZrC-ZrxSiy precipitates surrounded by a solidified Zr-Si melt. The microstructures of Ti-Al alloys with 70-80 wt% Al were investigated. Aluminum wire (99.999%) and TiH2 powder (99.7%) were used to produce the sample compositions inside a vertical tube furnace at 1600oC in an Ar atmosphere. Argon is purified through a dehumidification and deoxidation system. Magnesium perchlorate Mg(ClO4)2 acts as a desiccant and titanium sponge pulls oxygen from the Ar in furnaces operating at 800oC and 750oC. The causes of urolithiasis include such influences as diet, metabolic disorders, and genetic factors which have been documented as sources that aggravate urinary calculi depositions and aggregations, and, implicitly, as causes of urolithiasis. This study endeavors to detail the scientific mechanisms involved in calcium oxalate calculi formation, and, more importantly, their inhibition under growth conditions imposed by the traditional medicinal approach using the herbal extract, Larrea tridentata. Surfaces with exceptional properties are needed for next generation materials. Hypersonic re-entry space vehicles or turbines are subjected to both oxidizing and neutral environments and nose-caps or wings on such vehicles could easily reach operating temperatures of over 2000°C. Ultrahigh temperature ceramics like ZrB2 and HfB2 have melting temperatures of 3245°C and 3380°C respectively. However, these materials need to be protected from oxidation, usually with an oxide layer. Zirconium is more affordable and will be used to study its reaction with B4C and ZrSi2.

The problems of energy, efficiency and resolution calibration of the system operating in the energy (5-60 keV) range are discussed. We present the operation characteristics of the portable pyro-electric x-ray generator (COOL-X) and the application of the calibrated response spectrum in the elemental analysis using X-ray Fluorescence (XRF).

The objective of this thesis was to assess the repeatability of four-point bending method for estimating fatigue cracking of hot mix asphalt. This experimental research examined the influence of mix proportions, specifically asphalt and air void contents, on fatigue behavior of asphalt beam specimens in the laboratory tested with four-point bending method of loading. Following the relevant specifications, the strain-controlled mode of loading was selected. Fatigue failure is expected to occur at the cycle which the flexural stiffness of asphalt specimen reduced to 50% of initial amount. The main hip components analyzed were the femoral heads and the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) liners. Previous research has shown that hip implants tend to fail by the PE liners due to adhesive and abrasive wear, delamination, and third body particles (metals, ceramics, and PE). In this investigation we seek to identify the magnetic behavior of Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticles though AC-susceptibility and DC-magnetization measurements. Powder x-ray diffraction was performed to determine the purity and average diameter ( ~ 9nm) of the particles. Aditionally, structure was confirmed by comparison through the International Centre for Diffraction Data's Powder Diffraction File [52] (PDF # 08-0234).

Zero-field cooled and field cooled DC magnetization measurements (bifurcation and blocking temperature), as well as M(H) hysteresis (below and above the blocking temperature) lead us to initially suggest that the material may in fact be superparamagnetic. In this study, pure and l-arginine-doped KDP single crystals were grown by the slow solvent evaporation technique and further subjected to infrared absorption and Raman studies for the confirmation of chemical group functionalization and possible bonding between the organic and inorganic materials. The appearance in the infrared absorption spectra of additional vibrational lines, which mostly originate from disturbed N-H, C-H, and C-N bonds of the l-arginine-doped salt, confirm the interaction between KDP and the organic material. With industry's growing focus on the rapid manufacturing (RM) of end-use products, rapid prototyping (RP) or layered manufacturing (LM) machines that were originally designed to build prototypes may now be required to build functional end-use products. To successfully accomplish the transition, the available materials utilized in RP must provide the performance required for RM.
