Old Dominion University (ODU) has developed two fundamental courses for freshmen engineering students. The first course introduces the fundamentals of the practice of engineering including innovation, creativity, design and manufacturing, commercialization, teaming skills, environmental impact, and ethics. The second course is an exploration of engineering and engineering technology disciplines with an emphasis on projects. The purpose of these courses is to engage the students in the application of engineering early in their course of study with the hope that their interest will be reinforced and the likelihood of their being retained as students will increase. American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) offer a joint program for faculty and research development. This program known as ASEE/NASA Faculty Fellowship program offers opportunities for professional development for Engineering Technology faculty. This paper discusses one such experience involving applied research at NASA Langley Research Center, which resulted in professional development of the faculty member while enhancing the undergraduate curriculum in Engineering Technology.

This can happen only if the faculty are aware of the current trends in industry and are actively involved with industry and research projects. ASEE/NASA Faculty Fellowship program offers opportunities for professional development for Engineering Technology faculty. A parametric study of water jet cutting (WJC) process was done under the ASEE / NASA faculty fellowship program at NASA Langley Research Center. This is a design project of an air-filter sensor to be used in home heating and cooling system. The project includes conceptual design, analysis, implementation, tests and modifications. First, the air quality and power consumption between a clean air filter and a dirty air filter is studied. Then, a photo sensor circuit with an ultra high brightness LED emitter and a phototransistor receiver is used to detect dust particles. A red warning LED lights up when a specified amount of dust is collected on the filter and blocks the light beam between the emitter and the receiver. The emitter and …

Many engineering technology departments have four general areas that are used for evaluation of tenure and promotion. These areas include teaching, research and scholarly activities, service, and other professional activities. Although teaching is the primary mission in most engineering technology programs, external funding as part of the research area is playing a larger role in tenure decisions at many universities. This paper describes the development of the Automation Control Lab in the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program of the Engineering Technology Department at Old Dominion University. The reorganization goal of the development is to help students design, test, and implement their automation designs effectively. Three processes are adopted to achieve this goal: (1) floor-plan design and inventory control of the components, (2) using Automation Studio to dynamically check each design, and (3) using industrial Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) controllers to download PLC programs.

Assessment methodology and results for two Electrical Engineering Technology laboratory courses are shown. In these cases, courses are offered in both the traditional on- campus and non-traditional distance learning format, assessment methods are prescribed, assessment data are taken, and the results compiled and compared. Student comments are included which also support the assessment data. In addition, this paper describes ways in which the laboratory courses are structured in order to make the assessment process easier to manage. Lean Manufacturing is a powerful philosophy that advocates minimization of waste within an organization. The adoption of Lean Manufacturing philosophy by major manufacturers has created a demand for qualified personnel in this area. A training program in Lean Enterprise was developed by Old Dominion University for the Apprentice School at Northrop Grumman Newport News. Physical simulation activities are an integral part of this training program. Simulation activities related to shipbuilding operations have been incorporated in the Lean training course. This paper presents a successful senior project of instrumentation developed in a Mechanical Engineering Technology senior capstone course. Students were encouraged to approach the problem of designing an air-filter sensor and to propose an optimum and practical solution for the problem. Work includes conceptual design and analysis, implementation, tests and modifications. When an air filter is used in a home air conditioner, inhabitants often forget when to replace it until the cooling or heating capacity is obviously reduced. If the filter remains in service, the efficiency of the cooling/heating system will continue decreasing while the electricity bill will significantly increase. …

The Department of Engineering Technology at Old Dominion University offers TAC of ABET accredited baccalaureate programs in Civil Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, and Mechanical Engineering Technology. All students are required to take traditional courses in algebra and trigonometry, as well as differential and integral calculus, at the freshman and sophomore levels. While these courses provided the necessary basic mathematical skills, it was difficult to justify the traditional upper-division mathematics courses such as differential equations, vector analysis, etc., as appropriate for the special needs of engineering technology students.

This paper presents an approach on using spreadsheets to teach machine design. It also lists detailed procedures on how to implement the teaching scheme. Results show that spreadsheet programs can help students organize their design procedures. By using the characteristics of spreadsheet programs, students do not have to repeat the same calculation and can get the alternate solution of a design almost instantly when given different values on the inputs. When compared to the method taught by using calculators, students can significantly improve their performance on homework problems and tests. A senior design (Capstone) project for three mechanical engineering technology students at Old Dominion University is described. A prototype design is presented to perform the functional test of a leak-preventive toilet system. There are two major leaks in the toilet water tank. In the first case, leaking occurs when the seal in the water tank becomes aged. The leak is very easy to detect visually, since the outside of the tank and the floor becomes wet. The design and construction of a mobile laboratory to be used in conjunction with the televised program in Mechanical Engineering Technology Program at Old Dominion University is discussed. The aim of this program is to offer educational opportunities to individuals currently employed with an associate degree. The merit of the concept lies in the fact that it offers a cost effective way to provide a laboratory for multiple sites. Old Dominion University has developed an extensive distance learning system that includes 40 remote sites. A majority of the sites are located at community colleges. There are 30 sites in Virginia, three sites in North Carolina, one site in Washington State and one site in Arizona. In addition, there are four sites at Higher Education Centers in Virginia and one site at a local industrial facility. The long-term career patterns of Old Dominion University's engineering technology baccalaureate graduates have been studied extensively. Results from approximately 400 alumni have been analyzed. The results of the analysis are presented and conclusions are drawn from the trends. The results indicate that the career progress of engineering technology graduates over a nearly twenty-year period is substantial and that they are performing effectively in a variety of career patterns.
