Eeg Classification Using Residual Neural Networks, Eren Esener Jun 2019

Eeg Classification Using Residual Neural Networks, Eren Esener

Electrical Engineering

There is a growing desire to understand the EEG (electroencephalogram) signals related with brain activities. In order to analyze EEG signals, they first must be measured by sensors, which induces a lot of noise; then these signals are classified to understand the intended actions. In many cases a neural network is used as the algorithms for classification. A residual neural network (ResNet) is an artificial neural network (ANN) of a kind that are related with the pyramidal cells in the cerebral cortex. The goal of this work is to investigate the viability of ResNets for classifying EEG signals for hand …

3d Signal Strength Mapping Of 2.4ghz Wifi Networks, Brett D. Glidden Dec 2018

3d Signal Strength Mapping Of 2.4ghz Wifi Networks, Brett D. Glidden

Electrical Engineering

Many commercial businesses operate out of multi-story office buildings. These companies often use many Wi-Fi access points to set up their own wireless network. IT personnel determine proper Wi-Fi access point placement using Wi-Fi strength maps. Conventional Wi-Fi strength maps only provide a two-dimensional view representing the wireless access point's effective range. The signal quality and strength measurements do not include changing vertical elevation. Efficient network layout in a multi-story building requires a system calculating signal quality metrics in three dimensions.

This project involves designing and prototyping a system to achieve 2.4GHz Wi-Fi signal quality measurements in a three-dimensional reference …

Collision Avoidance Smartphone, Matt Columbres, Aaron Parisi, Joey Schnecker, Luis Wong Jun 2018

Collision Avoidance Smartphone, Matt Columbres, Aaron Parisi, Joey Schnecker, Luis Wong

Electrical Engineering

There are many instances in day-to-day life where people cannot or would rather not pay full attention to their surroundings. Walking while preoccupied with a smartphone or walking while blind are excellent examples where technology could be used to make the task of avoiding 2collisions reactive, instead of proactive. A device which monitors a user’s surroundings and notifies the user when a potential collision is detected (and, additionally, notifying them as to where the obstacle is with respect to them) could be used to make walking distracted less of a hazard for the user and those around the user and …

Electronic Drum Machine (E.D.M), Nyssa Marie Backes Jan 2018

Electronic Drum Machine (E.D.M), Nyssa Marie Backes

Electrical Engineering

Many people argue that a drummer plays the most important role in a band of any genre. During live performances, the other band members rely on the drummer to keep the song moving forward at a proper steady pace. Even in recorded music, drums help listeners sing and dance along with their favorite songs. Thus, achieving success as a band, both in terms of recordings and live shows, absolutely requires a drummer. So, if a band does not have a drummer, and cannot afford the hefty cost of hiring a session drummer, a touring drummer, or both, how can they …

Dual Method Headphone Amplifier, Joseph S. Gross, Timothy P. Murphy Dec 2017

Dual Method Headphone Amplifier, Joseph S. Gross, Timothy P. Murphy

Electrical Engineering

Many high impedance headphones underperform their full potential when directly connected to the audio source. Amplifiers boost the audio signal and provide the headphones with sufficient power to ensure their maximum performance. The invention of transistors caused vacuum tube implementation to decline, leaving many audiophiles unsatisfied with the transistor’s sound signature. Vacuum tubes and transistors both amplify signals, however the distinct “tube sound” has vanished.

We have designed and created a product where the user selectively switches between solid-state transistor and tube amplification to compare the sound signatures of each amplification method. The ability to switch between the solid-state and …

Chipper: Capacitive Bed Occupancy Sensing For An Intelligent Alarm Clock, David Levi Jun 2015

Chipper: Capacitive Bed Occupancy Sensing For An Intelligent Alarm Clock, David Levi

Electrical Engineering

What if your alarm clock knew when you got out—and stayed out—of bed? Current alarm clocks happily let you go back to bed after turning them off. In this project, I build an alarm which only stops ringing when you get out bed, and starts ringing again if you lie back in bed.

This project uses capacitance to detect bed occupancy. A person on or near the bed creates a tiny, picofarads level increase in capacitance, as seen by a sensor placed under the mattress. A microprocessor interprets this signal, and also drives an audio alarm. Shielding of the sensor …

Continuous Hand-Tool Leveling Device, Shaun Villa Koide Jun 2014

Continuous Hand-Tool Leveling Device, Shaun Villa Koide

Electrical Engineering

To produce clean and precise cuts, hand-tools (e.g. knives and saws) must maintain a consistent angle of orientation during the entire cutting process. The Continuous Hand-Tool Leveling Device mounts on the desired hand-tool and the user inputs the desired angle of the cutting plane. The device utilizes a microcontroller unit (MCU) and accelerometer to implement real-time angle measurement. When using a hand-tool, the device uses an LED that indicates that the hand-tool’s angle deviates from the user-set desired angle, which prevents any potential mistakes from occurring due to user error. The device easily mounts on many common cutting tools. Additionally, …

The purpose of this project is to create a system that automatically converts monophonic music into its MIDI equivalent. Automatic pitch recognition allows for numerous commercial applications, including automatic transcription and digital storage of live performances. It is also desirable to be able to take an audio signal as an input and create a MIDI equivalent score because the MIDI information can be used to replace the original audio signal sounds with any sound the user would like. For example, if a piano composition is entered into the system, the resulting MIDI out could be used to trigger guitar samples. …

Multiplicative Feedback Audio Distortion Circuit, Colton Parsons Jun 2013

Multiplicative Feedback Audio Distortion Circuit, Colton Parsons

Electrical Engineering

This circuit aims to distort an audio signal input in a novel and aesthetically pleasing manner. When it comes to the timbre of a note, even harmonics generally sound better than odd harmonics. Most forms of audio signal distortion (usually for electric guitar) primarily add odd harmonics to a signal, as this is easily accomplished by clipping the waveform. This project instead utilizes a signal multiplier in a feedback loop, with one multiplier input coming from the circuit’s input, and the other from the multiplier’s own output. This process creates even harmonics. A delay line is placed in the loop, …

Digital Graphic Equalizer Implemented Using An Fpga, Anthony Giardina Jun 2012

Digital Graphic Equalizer Implemented Using An Fpga, Anthony Giardina

Electrical Engineering

A graphic equalizer is a device that adjusts the tonal quality of an audio signal. When sound is converted from a digital format to analog sound waves, there are amplification and transducing steps in-between the two formats. Common devices to perform these tasks are speakers, amplifiers, DACs, etc. Many of these devices exhibit a non-uniform frequency response over the range of human hearing. Thus, it is possible that certain frequency ranges of the audio signal will be amplified and others will be attenuated. To counteract this, an audio equalizer can be used to boost and attenuate certain frequency ranges within …
