Abstract Phase wraparound due to large inter-sensor spacings in multi-channel demixing limits the range of relative delays that many time–frequency relative delay estimators can estimate. The performance of a large relative delay estimation method, called the elevatogram, is evaluated in the presence of significant phase wraparound. This paper compares the elevatogram with the popular relative delay estimator used in DUET and the brute-force approach in D-AdRess and analyses its computational efficiency. The elevatogram can accurately estimate relative delays of speech signals of up to 800 samples, whereas DUET and D-AdRess were limited to delays of 7 and 35 samples, given …

Healthcare benefits related to continuous monitoring of human movement and physical activity can potentially reduce the risk of accidents associated with elderly living alone at home. Based on the literature review, it is found that many studies focus on human activity recognition and are still active towards achieving practical solutions to support the elderly care system. The proposed system has introduced a joint approach of machine learning and signal processing technology for the recognition of human's physical movements using signal data generated by accelerometer sensors. The framework adopts the concept of DSP to select very descriptive feature sets and uses …

Study Of Obstacle Effect On The Gpsr Protocol And A Novel Intelligent Greedy Routing Protocol For Vanets, Ravikumar Chilmula Jan 2018

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

In recent years, connected vehicle technologies have been developed by automotive companies, academia, and researchers as part of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). This group of stakeholders continue to work on these technologies to make them as reliable and cost-effective as possible. This attention is because of the increasing connected vehicles safety-related, entertainment, and traffic management applications, which have the potential to decrease the number of road accidents, save fuel and time for millions of daily commuters worldwide.

Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network (VANET), which is a subgroup of Mobile Ad-Hoc Network (MANET), is being developed and implemented in vehicles as the critical …

An Acoustic-Based Approach For Condition Monitoring Of Pipes, Muhammad S. Khan, Turaj Ashuri, Mitchell Collins, Geoffrey Birkemeier, Emad Almohmmedali Jan 2017

An Acoustic-Based Approach For Condition Monitoring Of Pipes, Muhammad S. Khan, Turaj Ashuri, Mitchell Collins, Geoffrey Birkemeier, Emad Almohmmedali

Polyvinyl chloride pipes are extensively used in municipal sewer systems. As the sewer system ages, polyvinyl chloride pipes become prone to developing cracks that can release toxic effluents into the environment. Traditionally, utility operators pass a close circuit television camera mounted on a guided vehicle through the pipe to monitor the defects. The video is observed by a trained operator who records the condition of the pipe. This arrangement has two major limitations. First, it is expensive due to complex set up. Second, if a pipe is blocked the guided vehicle cannot pass through its entire length. A more economical …

Source Separation Approach To Video Quality Prediction In Computer Networks, Ruairí De Fréin May 2016

Source Separation Approach To Video Quality Prediction In Computer Networks, Ruairí De Fréin

Time-varying loads introduce errors in the estimated model parameters of service-level predictors in Computer Networks. A load-adjusted modification of a traditional unadjusted service-level predictor is contributed, based on Source Separation (SS). It mitigates these errors and improves service-quality predictions for Video-on-Demand (VoD) by :6 to 2dB.

Hybrid Single And Dual Pattern Structured Light Illumination, Minghao Wang Jan 2015

Hybrid Single And Dual Pattern Structured Light Illumination, Minghao Wang

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Structured Light Illumination is a widely used 3D shape measurement technique in non-contact surface scanning. Multi-pattern based Structured Light Illumination methods reconstruct 3-D surface with high accuracy, but are sensitive to object motion during the pattern projection and the speed of scanning process is relatively long. To reduce this sensitivity, single pattern techniques are developed to achieve a high speed scanning process, such as Composite Pattern (CP) and Modified Composite Pattern (MCP) technique. However, most of single patter techniques have a significant banding artifact and sacrifice the accuracy. We focus on developing SLI techniques can achieve both high speed, high …

Touch Screen Sound Controller, James Fenley, Jonathan Law Jun 2010

Touch Screen Sound Controller, James Fenley, Jonathan Law

Electrical Engineering

The Touch Screen Sound Controller sets out to explore the use of a touch screen as a sound control interface for the disk jockey profession. In addition, the project aims to provide an alternate means of transferring audio data by way of TCP/IP communications as opposed to MIDI. By applying our method, a user may stream pulse-code modulated data from a server onto a client’s RAM via an Ethernet connection. A 32bit, 200MHz ARM9 microprocessor addresses data from the RAM and proceeds with executing DSP instructions from the user. The connection between the touch screen and the central microprocessor is …
