Modeling And Validation Of A Synchronous-Machine/Controlled-Rectifier System, Kyle A. Hord
Modeling And Validation Of A Synchronous-Machine/Controlled-Rectifier System, Kyle A. Hord
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
The hardware validation of a novel average-value model (AVM) for the simulation of a synchronous-generator/controlled rectifier system is presented herein. The generator is characterized using genetic algorithm techniques to fit standstill frequency response (SSFR) measurements to q and d-axis equivalent circuits representing the generator in the rotor reference frame. The generator parameters form the basis of a detailed model of the system, from which algebraic functions defining the parametric AVM are derived. The average-value model is compared to the physical system for a variety of loading and operating conditions including step load change, change in delay angle, and external closed-loop …
Investigation Of Protection Issues And Method For The Distribution System With Distributed Generations, Ke Xu
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Because DGs are introduced into distribution systems, the coordination of fuses and reclosers doesn’t work well. It means the original protection schemes are not available for the distribution systems with DGs. This thesis paper presents the study on the impacts of DGs on the fault current and voltage in the distribution system by the simulation of a model distribution system. After we study the impacts of DG on distribution systems, there is an introduction of current several current protection schemes and fault locations methods. At last, an adaptive protection scheme with a more efficient fault location method for the distribution …

A New Design Of Dc-Dc Converter For Capacitive Deionization Process, Zhiao Li
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
The shortage of clean water has become a significant global problem, and capacitive deionization (CDI) is a technology that can be used to help relieve the problem. A Ćuk converter system that can recover energy from CDI cells is described. This converter transfers energy between two CDI cells when a cell is in its desorption period, allowing energy that would otherwise be lost to be recovered and improving overall system efficiency. In order to control the states of the MOSFET switches in the converter, a self boost charge pump is used. In this way, the microcontroller can control system duty …
Coordinated Voltage And Reactive Power Control Of Power Distribution Systems With Distributed Generation, Esa A. Paaso
Coordinated Voltage And Reactive Power Control Of Power Distribution Systems With Distributed Generation, Esa A. Paaso
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Distribution system voltage and VAR control (VVC) is a technique that combines conservation voltage reduction and reactive power compensation to operate a distribution system at its optimal conditions. Coordinated VVC can provide major economic benefits for distribution utilities. Incorporating distributed generation (DG) to VVC can improve the system efficiency and reliability. The first part of this dissertation introduces a direct optimization formulation for VVC with DG. The control is formulated as a mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem. The formulation is based on a three-phase power flow with accurate component models. The VVC problem is solved with a state of …

Copper Indium Diselenide Nanowire Arrays In Alumina Membranes Deposited On Molybdenum And Other Back Contact Substrates, Bhavananda R. Nadimpally
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Heterojunctions of CuInSe2 (CIS) nanowires with cadmium sulfide (CdS) were fabricated demonstrating for the first time, vertically aligned nanowires of CIS in the conventional Mo/CIS/CdS stack. These devices were studied for their material and electrical characteristics to provide a better understanding of the transport phenomena governing the operation of heterojunctions involving CIS nanowires. Removal of several key bottlenecks was crucial in achieving this. For example, it was found that to fabricate alumina membranes on molybdenum substrates, a thin interlayer of tungsten had to be inserted. A qualitative model was proposed to explain the difficulty in fabricating anodized aluminum oxide …

Fpga To Power System Theorization For A Fault Location And Specification Algorithm, Christina Yeoman
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Fault detection and location algorithms have allowed for the power industry to alter the power grid from the traditional model to becoming a smart grid. This thesis implements an already established algorithm for detecting faults, as well as an impedance-based algorithm for detecting where on the line the fault has occurred and develops a smart algorithm for future HDL conversion using Simulink. Using the algorithms, the ways in which this implementation can be used to create a smarter grid are the fundamental basis for this research. Simulink was used to create a two-bus power system, create environment variables, and then …

Power System State Estimation Using Phasor Measurement Units, Jiaxiong Chen
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
State estimation is widely used as a tool to evaluate the real time power system prevailing conditions. State estimation algorithms could suffer divergence under stressed system conditions. This dissertation first investigates impacts of variations of load levels and topology errors on the convergence property of the commonly used weighted least square (WLS) state estimator. The influence of topology errors on the condition number of the gain matrix in the state estimator is also analyzed. The minimum singular value of gain matrix is proposed to measure the distance between the operating point and state estimation divergence.

Power Control Of Single-Stage Pv Inverter For Distribution System Volt-Var Optimization, Xiao Liu
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
The output power variability of intermittent renewable sources can cause significant fluctuations in distribution system voltages. A local linear controller that exploits the capability of a photovoltaic inverter to provide both real and reactive power is described. This controller substitutes reactive power for real power when fluctuations in the output of the photovoltaic source are experienced. In this way, the inverter can help mitigate distribution system voltage fluctuations. In order to provide real and reactive to the grid, a three-phase grid-connected single-stage photovoltaic system with maximum power point tracking and power control is described. A method of reducing the current …
