Bicycle-Powered Ac Generator, Andrew Austin Jun 2011

Bicycle-Powered Ac Generator, Andrew Austin

Electrical Engineering

The purpose of this senior project is to design, build, and be able to present a mechanism that will produce AC power using the mechanical energy produced by a person pedaling a standard bicycle. Also, I would like to be able to show the user and the audience the advantage of using compact fluorescent bulbs, and in doing so, make them more conscience of energy-saving products. To do this, I must present a stand that can support a bicycle with a rider, a way to convert the wheel’s motion to DC power, to convert that DC power to usable AC …

Dc House Modeling And System Design, Jessica E. Chaidez Jun 2011

Dc House Modeling And System Design, Jessica E. Chaidez

Electrical Engineering

This project entails the study and design of DC power distribution for the DC House Project. Wire size, common high efficient loads, maximum power input, and different distribution system implementation (ring or radial) play a major role when designing an efficient, low-voltage distribution system. Efficiency is determined based on which main bus voltage powers all the loads with minimal power loss. Power efficiency is heavily dependent in DC-DC converter efficiencies due to the power loss in converting the voltage from high to low, or vice versa. Selection of the wire size plays a major role in power losses. There are …

This backpack will allow students to charge their devices “on the go.” When students walk or bike around campus, the solar panels attached to the backpack will allow recharging of their portable …

Android Application Controlled Surge Protector, Lok An Jun 2011

Android Application Controlled Surge Protector, Lok An

Electrical Engineering

A significant amount of consumer electronics cannot be switched off completely without being unplugged. Standby power, also known as phantom power, refers to the electric power consumed by electronic appliances when they are switched off. There are some devices that need constant power; items like alarm clocks and security systems need constant power to function correctly. Some devices, such as video game consoles and televisions, consume power without offering any features. Electricity lost from standby power has been increasing with the amount of consumer electronics increasing in households.

This project’s goal is to create a low power remote that can …

Design And Simulation Of V2g Bidirectional Inverter And Dc-Dc Converter, Allan Agatep, Mason Ung

Electrical Engineering

As plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) become more popular, the utility companies are forced to feed the grid more electricity. However, these PHEVs are capable of providing power to the grid when they are parked serving as ancillary systems for grid regulation (V2G). Using a system based on photovoltaic (PV) technology, a design for a bidirectional inverter with LCL filter, and a bidirectional dc-dc with a constant current controller, was constructed using LTspice. Various papers were researched and analyzed to determine applicable designs for components. Simulations show the designs are capable of bidirectional power transfer. ETAP simulations show that delivering …

Development Of Wind Tunnel For Laboratory Wind Turbine Testing, Danny Alexander Zepeda Jun 2011

Development Of Wind Tunnel For Laboratory Wind Turbine Testing, Danny Alexander Zepeda

Electrical Engineering

A wind tunnel with a 0.5 HP motor was purchased by Cal Poly Electrical Engineering Department from Hampden for $16,000. It can only simulate winds of up to 10 MPH. The tunnel has a manual dial that controls the wind speed. It also measures the voltage and current output with an analog measure display. This wind tunnel was expensive and unfortunately cannot achieve very high wind speeds. For this reason, a similar wind tunnel with more potential and with a smaller budget was proposed to be built for use in the Sustainable Energy Lab. The new wind tunnel that was …

Wireless Sensor Network For Energy And Environmental Monitoring: Helping Old Buildings Go Green, Jacob Power

Electrical Engineering

Today, the rising cost of energy and social trend of “going green” has put increasing pressure on commercial property owners to improve the efficiency of their investments.  There is good reason for this, too.  In the State of California, office buildings represent the single largest user of energy in the commercial sector.  This project consisted of the design, implementation, construction, testing, and deployment of a wireless sensor network for energy and environmental monitoring in retrofit commercial office installations.  The analyzed data generated by this system can be used by building management and owners to identify areas of inefficiency within the …

A control circuit was implemented to prevent overcharging or over-discharging of the battery, by disconnecting it from the panel or the load, respectively. The control circuit turn-on and cutoff voltages were measured versus battery voltage, and the on-resistance of the MOSFET switches was measured for various load currents. A table of …

Wireless Energy Transfer, Ryan Sasur Jan 2011

Wireless Energy Transfer, Ryan Sasur

Electrical Engineering

Phones are now an integral component in the daily lives of people. Smartphones give access to movies, internet, and even books. This versatility and increased use can also lead to a shorter battery life. A phone with video viewing capabilities will be a heavy load on the unit’s battery. With phones utilizing 3G and 4G technology, even heavier demands are placed on the battery. As technology improves even further to provide for a larger entertainment experience on the phone, this could also lead to further battery degradation if the current battery situation isn’t addressed. To have a fully operational phone …

Hydro-Electric Generation System For The Dc House Project, Dennis Kwan, Mitchell Krug

Electrical Engineering

This paper focuses on the design, integration, and construction of a system that harnesses energy from flowing water. The system will be used in conjunction with the DC House Project. The proposed system employs a DC generator and DC-DC Boost-converter to provide electricity to the DC House at approximately 200-300W. Results of the testing and measurement show that the goal of the system is feasible, but currently limited. The generator could not output the specified power. Details of the design, along with ideas for further improvement, are presented in this report.

Power Losses Associated With Stand-By Chargers, Robert Peralta Jun 2010

Power Losses Associated With Stand-By Chargers, Robert Peralta

Electrical Engineering

Many average households across the United States may not realize how much power is saved by simply removing the plug from the receptacle when not being used. A misconception with stand-by/portable chargers is; if a device is not connected to the charger, but the charger is still connected to the wall, then the charger will not consume power. That statement is false. The following report will demonstrate how much power is lost in an average household. When a reference is made to an average house, I will refer to a 4 bedroom single family home. The house will have an …

Electrical Engineering

The Electric Bicycle System is a systems project that incorporates three different ways of charging a lithium-ion battery: the 120VAC wall outlet, regenerative braking, and solar power; which is used to power an electric hub motor running a bicycle. The purpose of the project is to show that it is possible and relatively simple, to build an electric bicycle by oneself. This project can be broken down into five separate categories: the lithium-ion battery, the DC-DC boost converter, the solar panel, the motor, and the motor controller. Each of these will be built upon and improved further by future students, …

Transmission Line Forecast Study, Ryan Garoogian Jun 2010

Transmission Line Forecast Study, Ryan Garoogian

Electrical Engineering

Load forecasting is the procedure to predict future loading conditions on a power system. Using simulation software such as ETAP you are able to predict abnormal voltage conditions, overloading of certain equipment, as well as determine protective equipment from short circuit studies. This study consisted of a 115kV loop network with multiple loading busses and one infinite bus. There was no separate generation other than the infinite bus. As load increased from forecasting to the future voltage dropped. To restore voltage levels capacitors were added at strategic points in the system to boost the voltage back up. Preparing yourself for …
