Autonomous Dc Microgrid With Self-Configurable Feasibility, Amir Farshad

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Microgrids are power systems that work not only from the main power grid, but also in island mode operation. As each of the power sources and loads have voltage and current limitations, the autonomous microgrid should be able to control voltage and current levels while loads and sources are connected to the grid. Therefore, the microgrid bus voltage remains constant and power transfers safely.

To configure an autonomous microgrid, the load and source type identification comes to mind. An autonomous microgrid needs to know the type of the electrical components which are going to be connected to the grid. In …

Dc Microgrid Stabilization Through Fuzzy Control Of Interleaved, Heterogeneous Storage Elements, Robert David Smith Jan 2014

Dc Microgrid Stabilization Through Fuzzy Control Of Interleaved, Heterogeneous Storage Elements, Robert David Smith

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

As microgrid power systems gain prevalence and renewable energy comprises greater and greater portions of distributed generation, energy storage becomes important to offset the higher variance of renewable energy sources and maximize their usefulness. One of the emerging techniques is to utilize a combination of lead-acid batteries and ultracapacitors to provide both short and long-term stabilization to microgrid systems.

The different energy and power characteristics of batteries and ultracapacitors imply that they ought to be utilized in different ways. Traditional linear controls can use these energy storage systems to stabilize a power grid, but cannot effect more complex interactions. This …

Out-Of-Step Detection Based On Zubov’S Approximation Boundary Method, Yawei Wei Jan 2014

Out-Of-Step Detection Based On Zubov’S Approximation Boundary Method, Yawei Wei

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Disturbances in power systems may lead to electromagnetic transient oscillations due to mismatch of mechanical input power and electrical output power. Out-of-step conditions in power system are common after the disturbances where the continuous oscillations do not damp out and the system becomes unstable. Existing out-of-step detection methods are system specific as extensive off-line studies are required for setting of relays. Most of the existing algorithms also require network reduction techniques to apply in multi-machine power systems. To overcome these issues, this research applies Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) data and Zubov’s approximation stability boundary method, which is a modification of …

Experimental Investigation Into Particulate Matter Distribution In Catalyzed Particulate Filters Using A 3d Terahertz Wave Scanner, Ryan Kristopher Foley

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The particulate matter distribution (PM) trends that exist in catalyzed particulate filters (CPFs) after loading, passive oxidation, active regeneration, and post loading conditions are not clearly understood. These data are required to optimize the operation of CPFs, prevent damage to the CPFs caused by non-uniform distributions, and develop accurate CPF models. To develop an understanding of PM distribution trends, multiple tests were conducted and the PM distribution was measured in three dimensions using a terahertz wave scanner. The results of this work indicate that loading, passive oxidation, active regeneration, and post loading can all cause non-uniform PM distributions. The density …
