Hpc-Enabled Fast And Configurable Dynamic Simulation, Analysis, And Learning For Complex Power System Adaptation And Control, Cong Wang
All Dissertations
This dissertation presents an HPC-enabled fast and configurable dynamic simulation, analysis, and learning framework for complex power system adaptation and control. Dynamic simulation for a large transmission system comprising thousands of buses and branches implies the latency of complicated numerical computations. However, faster-than-real-time execution is often required to provide timely support for power system planning and operation. The traditional approaches for speeding up the simulation demand extensive computing facilities such as CPU-based multi-core supercomputers, resulting in heavily resource-dependent solutions. In this work, by coupling the Message Passing Interface (MPI) protocol with an advanced heterogeneous programming environment, further acceleration can be …

The development of green and sustainable water-splitting hydrogen production technology is beneficial to reducing the over-reliance on fossil fuels and realizing the strategic goal of "carbon neutral". As one of the half reactions for water splitting, oxygen evolution reaction has suffered the problems of sluggish four-electron transfer process and relatively slow reaction kinetics. Therefore, exploring efficient and stable catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction is of critical importance for water-splitting technology. Metal alkoxides are a series of compounds formed by the coordination function of metal ions with alcohol molecules. Metal alkoxides possess the double advantages of organic materials and inorganic materials, …

The growing demands for electric vehicles and consumer electronics; as well as the expanding renewable energy storage market; have promoted extensive research on energy storage technologies with low costhigh energy density and safety. Lithium (Li) metal and solid-state electrolytes are considered as important components for next-generation batteries because of their great potential for improvements in energy density and safety performance. Inorganic garnet-type solid electrolytes with high Li-ion conductivity (about 10-3 S·cm-1) and high shear modulus (55 GPa) are considered to be ideal solid-state electrolytes; however; the issue of Li dendrite growth still obstructs their practical application. Herein; …

Thanks to abundant resource and rapid redox reaction kinetics, iodine is regarded as promising positive materials inthe batteries. However, the shuttling effect due to the high solubility of iodine in the electrolyte makes the performance of battery poor. In this paper, polyethylene glycol (PEG400) and potassium iodide were added into zinc-ion aqueous electrolyte. PEG400 could complex with iodine to reduce the dissolution of iodine, therefore alleviating the formation of soluble triiodide (I3–) from iodine and iodide ions. Furthermore, this electrolyte was used in the battery with double carbon cloths as the current collectors, double separators and zinc …

Frequency Stability Constrained Grid Operation With High Penetration Of Renewables, Ningchao Gao
Frequency Stability Constrained Grid Operation With High Penetration Of Renewables, Ningchao Gao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Achieving carbon neutrality necessitates a significant integration of renewable energy into power systems. However, the swift implementation of fluctuating renewable energy (VRE) sources such as solar photovoltaics (PV) exacerbates real time power imbalances due to the randomness and uncertainty associated with VRE power generation. Further, the declining reliance on conventional synchronous generators (SGs) for system inertia presents considerable challenges in maintaining frequency stability, especially following disturbances.
Two possible solutions are proposed to address the first issue. Firstly, a speedy real time generation dispatch can be scheduled to allocate generation resources within short time intervals to effectively respond to changes in …

Journal of Electrochemistry
Hydrophobicity of the cathode catalyst layers (CCLs) crucially determines the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) by affecting the transports of oxygen and liquid water. In this regard, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is usually used as a hydrophobic additive to facilitate the oxygen and water transports in CCLs. So far, there remains lacking systematic effort to optimize the addition methods of PTFE in CCLs and the mechanisms behind. In this work, the effects of the approaches for PTFE addition and the distribution of PTFE on the mass transport of oxygen and the proton conduction in CCLs were studied by using …

With a high cell-level specific energy and a low cost, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery has been intensively studied as one of the most promising candidates for competing the next-generation energy storage campaign. Currently, the practical use of Li-S battery is hindered by the rapidly declined storage performance during battery operation, as caused by irreversible loss of electroactive sulfide species at the cathode, dendrite formation at the anode and parasitic reactions at the electrode-electrolyte interface due to unfavorable cathode-anode crosstalk. In this perspective, we propose to stabilize the Li-S electrochemistry, and improve the storage performance of battery by designing asymmetric electrode-electrolyte interfaces …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Organic Additives For Copper Electroplating Of Interconnects, Yue-Hui Zhai, Yi-Xiao Peng, Yan Hong, Yuan-Ming Chen, Guo-Yun Zhou, Wei He, Peng-Ju Wang, Xian-Ming Chen, Chong Wang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Copper interconnects are essential to the functionality, performance, power efficiency, reliability, and fabrication yield of electronic devices. They are widely found in chips, packaging substrates and printed circuit boards, and are often produced by copper electroplating in an acidic aqueous solution. Organic additives play a decisive role in regulating copper deposition to fill microgrooves, and micro-vias to form fine lines and interlayer interconnects. Generally, an additive package consists of three components (brightener, suppressor, and leveler), which have a synergistic effect of super-filling on electroplating copper when the concentration ratio is appropriate. Many works of literature have discussed the mechanism of …

Recent Progress Of Bifunctional Electrocatalysts For Oxygen Electrodes In Unitized Regenerative Fuel Cells, Tian-Long Zheng, Ming-Yu Ou, Song Xu, Xin-Biao Mao, Shi-Yi Wang, Qing-Gang He
Journal of Electrochemistry
Unitized regenerative fuel cells (URFCs), which oxidize hydrogen to water to generate electrical power under thefuel cells (FCs) mode and electrolyze water to hydrogen under the water electrolysis (WE) mode for recycling, areknown as clean and sustainable energy conversion devices. In contrast to the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) andhydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on the hydrogen electrode side, the sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on the oxygen electrode side requires highly efficient bifunctional oxygencatalysts. Conventional precious metal oxygen catalysts combine Pt and IrO2 with excellent ORR and OER activities toachieve bifunctional electrocatalysis performance, but …

Band Alignments Of Metal/Oxides-Water Interfaces Using Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics, Yong-Bin Zhuang, Jun Cheng
Journal of Electrochemistry
Band alignments of electrode-water interfaces are of crucial importance for understanding electrochemical interfaces. In the scenario of electrocatalysis, applied potentials are equivalent to the Fermi levels of metals in the electrochemical cells; in the scenario of photo(electro)catalysis, semiconducting oxides under illumination have chemical reactivities toward redox reactions if the redox potentials of the reactions straddle the conduction band minimums (CBMs) or valence band maximums (VBMs) of the oxides. Computational band alignments allow us to obtain the Fermi level of metals, as well as the CBM and VBM of semiconducting oxides with respect to reference electrodes. In this tutorial, we describe …

Crafting charge transfer channels at titanium dioxide (TiO2) based photoanodes remain a pressing bottleneck in solar-to-chemical conversion technology. Despite the tremendous attempts, TiO2 as the promising photoanode material still suffers from sluggish charge transport kinetics. Herein, we propose an assembly strategy that involves the axial coordination grafting metalloporphyrin-based photosensitizer molecules (MP) onto the surface-modified TiO2 nanorods (NRs) photoanode, forming the composite MP/TiO2 NRs photoelectrode. As expected, the resulted unique MPB/TiO2 NRs photoelectrode displays significantly improved photocurrent density as compared to TiO2 NRs alone and MPA/TiO2 NRs photoelectrode. Scanning …

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been reported as a type of solvent for the controllable synthesis of metal nanostructures. Interestingly, flower-like palladium (Pd) nanoparticles composed of staggered nanosheets and nanospheres are spontaneously transformed into three-dimensional (3D) network nanostructures in choline chloride-urea DESs using ascorbic acid as a reducing agent. Systematic studies have been carried out to explore the formation mechanism, in which DESs itself acts as a solvent and soft template for the formation of 3D flower-like network nanostructures (FNNs). The amounts of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and sodium hydroxide also play a crucial role in the anisotropic growth and …

Metals And Alloys As Catalytic Hosts Of Sulfur Cathode For Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Zhen-Yu Wang, Xue-Ping Gao
Journal of Electrochemistry
Lithium-sulfur batteries are recognized as one of the most promising next-generation energy storage devices, owing to the high theoretical energy density of 2600 Wh·kg–1. However, their application has been seriously hindered by the sluggish electrochemical reaction kinetics of elemental sulfur and discharged products (Li2S2/Li2S), and the notorious “shuttle effect” of soluble intermediate lithium polysulfide species, leading to poor cycle stability, low sulfur utilization and inferior coulombic efficiency. Introducing catalytic hosts into sulfur cathode is an efficient path to propel the conversion of sulfur-contained species, thus preventing the dissolution and loss of active-sulfur …
