Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Electrochemical sensing is widely used for chemical and biological detection due to its high sensitivity, label-free operation, and compatibility with miniaturized electronic systems. However, conventional microelectrode platforms operate in an ensemble-averaged regime in which the measured current represents the collective response of many molecules interacting with the electrode surface. This ensemble averaging masks localized nanoscale electrochemical events and limits the ability to detect rare interactions, such as single molecules or nanoparticles. Achieving single-entity electrochemical detection therefore requires strategies that confine electrochemical reactions to nanoscale regions while maintaining compatibility with scalable planar microfabrication.
This dissertation investigates nanoscale electrochemical confinement on planar …
High-Performance Circuit Manufacturing And Testing Exercises, Benjamin S. Keppers
High-Performance Circuit Manufacturing And Testing Exercises, Benjamin S. Keppers
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
An advanced demonstrator Printed Circuit Board (PCB) has been designed and implemented providing a framework for advancing students’ knowledge in hands-on PCB design and manufacturing process through industry recognized test coupons, stack ups, and transmission lines. Students are guided through several key aspects of design and simulation relating to manufacturing and qualifications. Manufacturing allows students to refine process development and analyze performance data with respect to qualification tests specified by Global Electronics Association standards. Results are then used to build a stackup model, and complete a design activity for calculating expected test results for a series of controlled impedance electrical …

Process Development, Physical, And Electrical Characterization Of Langmuir Blodgett Trough Deposited Polyaniline, Mehdi Malekrah
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Conductive polymers have recently attracted a lot of attention in advanced technologies because of their unique characteristics. Among the conductive polymers, polyaniline (PANi) has been studied widely because of its environmental stability, simple processing, inexpensive source monomer, and, most importantly, its controllable wide conductivity range due to the doping (protonation) process. These characteristics of PANi make it a strong candidate for applications in numerous areas such as biosensors, transparent display, photovoltaic devices, batteries, and, more recently, flexible electronics. Even with the many studies that have been conducted in this field, however, future advances are still needed to optimize the processability, …
Towards Systems On Cloth: The Design, Manufacturing, And Validation Of Open-Source Embroidered Resistors, Somerset Schrock
Towards Systems On Cloth: The Design, Manufacturing, And Validation Of Open-Source Embroidered Resistors, Somerset Schrock
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
This thesis is focused on advancing embroidered wearable electronics and textile electronics by creating open-source flexible resistors. Advancements in textile electronics could usher a new generation of smart devices that are entirely flexible. Current systems on cloth primarily use rigid components, which limits the flexibility and comfort of using the fabric devices. To advance this field, I propose a novel method of creating flexible electrical resistors with embroidery. To realize this technology, I created an open-source tool to create embroidery files for machine fabrication. This thesis details the methods and tools created for resistor fabrication. The resistors were tested to …

Nanosphere Lithography And Its Application In Rapid And Economic Fabrication Of Plasmonic Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon Photovoltaic Devices, Chenlong Zhang
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Solar photovoltaic (PV) devices harvest energy from solar radiation and convert it to electricity. PV technologies, as an alternative to traditional fossil fuels, use clean and renewable energy while minimizing pollution. For decades researchers have been developing thin film solar cells as an important alternatives to the relatively expensive bulk crystal solar cell technology. Among those, hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) solar cells prevails for good efficiency, non-toxic and materially abundant nature. However, a-Si:H thickness must be minimized to prevent light induced degradation, so optical enhancement is necessary. Light manipulation has to be applied and carefully engineered to trap light within …
Scalable Integrated Circuit Simulation Algorithms For Energy-Efficient Teraflop Heterogeneous Parallel Computing Platforms, Lengfei Han
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Integrated circuit technology has gone through several decades of aggressive scaling. It is increasingly challenging to analyze growing design complexity. Post-layout SPICE simulation can be computationally prohibitive due to the huge amount of parasitic elements, which can easily boost the computation and memory cost. As the decrease in device size, the circuits become more vulnerable to process variations. Designers need to statistically simulate the probability that a circuit does not meet the performance metric, which requires millions times of simulations to capture rare failure events.
Recent, multiprocessors with heterogeneous architecture have emerged as mainstream computing platforms. The heterogeneous computing platform can …
