Archimedean Spiral Antenna Array With Klopfenstein And Exponential Tapered Balun Feeds, Leo Joseph Alvelais Iv, Paul Obrecht, Naguib Abdulla, Preston Mavady, Collin Fan
Electrical Engineering
This project presents the design, fabrication, and experimental evaluation of a broadband 3x3 Archimedean spiral antenna array tile for 2.8-3.8 GHz. Each element combines a two-arm spiral on Rogers RO4350B, a printed 50 to 150 Ω tapered balun, and a conductive backplane. Klopfenstein and Exponential feed implementations were modeled in Ansys HFSS, generated and tuned with automated scripting, fabricated, and evaluated with calibrated network and anechoic-chamber measurements. The Klopfenstein-fed hardware met the -10 dB input-reflection criterion across the project band. The exponential array provided a broad matched response but reached approximately -8 dB near 2.95 GHz. Measured center-element patterns retained …
Computational Methods For Complex Electromagnetic Geometries And Media, Edgar Bustamante
Computational Methods For Complex Electromagnetic Geometries And Media, Edgar Bustamante
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Additive manufacturing has enabled electromagnetic devices with increasingly complex geometries, but existing numerical tools remain limited in their ability to model and design such structures. This dissertation presents two major advancements that address these restrictions in the finite-difference frequency-domain method (FDFD) and the spatially-variant lattice algorithm (SVLA). These two numerical methods provide a foundation for future exploration in the simulation, optimization, and realization of next-generation electromagnetic devices. First, a general bianisotropic FDFD formulation based on the vector wave equation is presented that enables practical modeling of metamaterials using effective medium homogenized parameters rather than explicitly resolving subwavelength metamaterial features. The …
Higher Order Bessel Beams Integrated In Time (Hobbit) With Engineered Light Frequencies And Applications In Computational Imaging, Tyler Cramer
All Theses
This thesis presents an adaptive optical system which leverages the frequency shifts from an acousto-optic deflector (AOD) form an array of uniformly spaced frequency diverse beamlets. These beamlets are then spatially transformed (wrapped) into a circular array forming a non-diffracting ring with an unprecedented orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode switching rate of 50Mhz with an OAM range of ±64. Along with frequency diversity, the non-diffracting range of the beams are analyzed 6 Rayleigh ranges of an equivalently sized gaussian beam. Inherent in the frequencies superposed on the AOD are associated relative phases which can be controlled to form sets of …

Electromagnetic Theory And Applications, 2nd Edition, Nicholas Madamopoulos, George Kliros
Open Educational Resources
This book intends to provide both the fundamentals of Electromagnetics but also some practical applications of the concepts covered. Having taught electromagnetics for several years, the authors feel that many times the field of electromagnetics comes as “old” and often times students do not appreciate the concepts and their importance in everyday applications. The authors intend to accompany the EM concepts with life applications. Hence, students may see the direct impact of the knowledge they acquire through the study of the field of electromagnetics and better appreciate the field.
Adaptive Gps Antenna Array Beam Nulling Effectiveness Under Varying Antenna Element Positioning, Aadesh Neel
Adaptive Gps Antenna Array Beam Nulling Effectiveness Under Varying Antenna Element Positioning, Aadesh Neel
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Global Positioning System (GPS) is an essential part of modern life but is susceptible to same frequency jamming. GPS jamming can add excessive noise to a received low power signal and have the capability to change or completely distort information being sent through the GPS signal. Adaptive antenna arrays have long since been a solution to mitigating GPS jamming via beamnulling algorithms. However, there is little research on the effectiveness of these beamnulling algorithms under varying element positioning. In this work, an adaptive antenna array, consisting of Right-Hand Circularly Polarized (RHCP) nearly square GPS antenna elements, was constructed and tested …
Improved Experimental Validation Of An Electromagnetic Subcell Model For Narrow Slots With Depth, Michael Anthony Illescas
Improved Experimental Validation Of An Electromagnetic Subcell Model For Narrow Slots With Depth, Michael Anthony Illescas
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The coupling of electromagnetic (EM) energy into a system can disrupt operation of essential electronics present within it. Metal enclosures are used to shield these systems from potentially harmful electromagnetic interference (EMI). Seams and gaps in such metal enclosures are minimized but unavoidable for reasons such as maintenance and repair. These seams and gaps create an entry point for EM energy to couple into the system. Entry points are often modeled by EM analysts as narrow slots defined by their length, width, and depth. The depth of these slots can become significant compared to the wavelength, introducing resonances associated with …

Processes & Toolchain For Automation Of Hybrid Direct-Write 3d Printing, Gilbert Thomas Carranza
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Hybrid 3D printing has evolved from a means to rapidly prototype devices to a fully viable means of manufacturing final products. In particular, electronic and electromagnetic devices have been a focus of hybrid 3D printing multi material structures. However, while the hardware capabilities have been around for years, the software capabilities have only begun to catch up. A process and toolchain for hybrid 3D printing is critically needed. This work details a process and toolchain for hybrid 3D printing metal dielectric structures. In it, a basic slicing algorithm is shown along with off-axis printing and conformal printing for arbitrary curvatures. These …
Optical Signal Processing With Discrete-Space Metamaterials, Mohammad Moein Moeini
Optical Signal Processing With Discrete-Space Metamaterials, Mohammad Moein Moeini
Wayne State University Dissertations
As digital circuits are approaching the limits of Moore’s law, a great deal of efforthas been directed to alternative computing approaches. Among them, the old concept of optical signal processing (OSP) has attracted attention, revisited in the light of metamaterials and nano-photonics. This approach has been successful in realizing basic mathematical operations, such as derivatives and integrals, but it is difficult to be applied to more complex ones. Inspired by digital filters, we propose a radically new OSP approach, able to realize arbitrary mathematical operations over a nano-photonic platform. We demonstrate this concept for the case of spatial differentiation, image …

Multi-Physics-Based Approach To Active Microwave Thermography, Seyed Ali Mirala
Doctoral Dissertations
“The goal of this work is to advance a novel nondestructive testing (NDT) method for controlled, rapid, and effective inspection of a structure through the integration of microwave NDT and thermography, referred to as Active Microwave Thermography (AMT). In AMT, the structure under test is exposed to microwave radiation and the thermal profile of the structure is monitored via a thermal camera in order to obtain desired information regarding the structure. This new technique is applicable across a wide range of NDT needs including detection of voids, delamination, water ingress, debonding, and cracks in numerous structures such as carbon fiber …
Modeling Land Subsidence Using Insar And Airborne Electromagnetic Data, Ryan G. Smith, R. Knight
Modeling Land Subsidence Using Insar And Airborne Electromagnetic Data, Ryan G. Smith, R. Knight
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Land subsidence as a result of groundwater overpumping in the San Joaquin Valley, California, is associated with the loss of groundwater storage and aquifer contamination. Although the physical processes governing land subsidence are well understood, building predictive models of subsidence is challenging because so much subsurface information is required to do so accurately. For the first time, we integrate airborne electromagnetic data, representing the subsurface, with subsidence data, mapped by interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR), to model deformation. By combining both data sets, we are able to solve for hydrologic and geophysical properties of the subsurface to effectively model the …

Evaluation Of Wireless Router Antennas And 3d-Printed Simulated Antenna Designs, Bibek Kattel
Evaluation Of Wireless Router Antennas And 3d-Printed Simulated Antenna Designs, Bibek Kattel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As the size of the electronics devices is decreasing the overall size of the antenna inside them is also decreasing. As the antenna size becomes smaller it is more difficult to manufacture them with the process of traditional manufacturing that uses the subtractive method to manufacture a structure. This is where additive manufacturing has an edge on traditional manufacturing. The use of this method to manufacture antennas has been discussed in this thesis. Five antennas from a wireless router are evaluated by modeling them in CST Microwave Studio and are modified so that they can be manufactured with 3D printing. …

Dual Source Excitation Rectangular Waveguide Design And Evaluation For The Measurement Of Electromagnetic Material Properties, Daniel K. Koch
Dual Source Excitation Rectangular Waveguide Design And Evaluation For The Measurement Of Electromagnetic Material Properties, Daniel K. Koch
Theses and Dissertations
Broadband material parameter measurements are essential in understanding how materials interact with electromagnetic waves. Traditional rectangular waveguide material measurement systems are bandwidth limited. This results in multiple rectangular waveguides of different sizes used to conduct broadband material parameter extraction. Efforts to produce a broadband rectangular waveguide have focused on the inclusion of different guiding structures in the waveguide body. These designs have the drawback of requiring precise machining and time-consuming sample preparation. This research proposes a new broadband rectangular waveguide design which uses a dual source excitation design. This is enabled by the fact that rectangular waveguides are linear time …

Free-Space Measurements Of Dielectrics And Three-Dimensional Periodic Metamaterials, Clifford E. Kintner
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents the free-space measurements of a periodic metamaterial structure. The metamaterial unit cell consists of two dielectric sheets intersecting at 90 degrees. The dielectric is a polyetherimide-based material 0.001” thick. Each sheet has a copper capacitively-loaded loop (CLL) structure on the front and a cut-wire structure on the back. Foam material is used to support the unit cells. The unit cell repeats 40 times in the x-direction, 58 times in the y-direction and 5 times in the z-direction. The sample measures 12” × 12” × 1” in total. We use a free-space broadband system comprised of a pair …
Quasi-Magnetostatic Field Modeling Of Ships In The Presence Of Dynamic Sea Waves, Cody Lonsbury
Quasi-Magnetostatic Field Modeling Of Ships In The Presence Of Dynamic Sea Waves, Cody Lonsbury
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Mechanical stresses placed on ferromagnetic materials while under the influence of a magnetic field are known to cause changes to the permanent magnetization of the material. Modeling this phenomenon is vital to the safety of ocean faring ships. In this thesis, a quasi-strip theory method of computing the nonlinear wave induced motion of a ship is developed, and the fluid pressure on the surface of the hull is used to determine the mechanical stresses. An existing magnetostatic volume integral equation code is used to evaluate the effects of the ship motion and hull stresses. The resulting changes in the magnetic …
Constrained Divergence-Conforming Basis Functions For Method Of Moments Discretizations In Electromagnetics, Robert Pfeiffer
Constrained Divergence-Conforming Basis Functions For Method Of Moments Discretizations In Electromagnetics, Robert Pfeiffer
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Higher-order basis functions are widely used to model currents and fields in numerical simulations of electromagnetics problems because of the greater accuracy and computational efficiency they can provide. Different problem formulations, such as method of moments (MoM) and the finite element method (FEM) require different constraints on basis functions for optimal performance, such as normal or tangential continuity between cells. In this thesis, a method of automatically generating bases that satisfy the desired basis constraints is applied to a MoM formulation for scattering problems using surface integral equations. Numerical results demonstrate the accuracy of this approach, and show good system …
On Electromagnetic And Quantum Invisibility, Pattabhiraju Chowdary Mundru
On Electromagnetic And Quantum Invisibility, Pattabhiraju Chowdary Mundru
Doctoral Dissertations
The principle objective of this dissertation is to investigate the fundamental properties of electromagnetic wave interactions with artificially fabricated materials i.e., metamaterials for application in advanced stealth technology called electromagnetic cloaking. The main goal is to theoretically design a metamaterial shell around an object that completely eliminates the dipolar and higher order multipolar scattering, thus making the object invisible.
In this context, we developed a quasi-effective medium theory that determines the optical properties of multi-layered-composites beyond the quasi-static limit. The proposed theory exactly reproduces the far-field scattering/extinction cross sections through an iterative process in which mode-dependent quasi-effective impedances of the …
A Multi-Physics Computational Approach To Simulating Thz Photoconductive Antennas With Comparison To Measured Data And Fabrication Of Samples, Darren Ray Boyd
A Multi-Physics Computational Approach To Simulating Thz Photoconductive Antennas With Comparison To Measured Data And Fabrication Of Samples, Darren Ray Boyd
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
The frequency demands of radiating systems are moving into the terahertz band with potential applications that include sensing, imaging, and extremely broadband communication. One commonly used method for generating and detecting terahertz waves is to excite a voltage-biased photoconductive antenna with an extremely short laser pulse. The pulsed laser generates charge carriers in a photoconductive substrate which are swept onto the metallic antenna traces to produce an electric current that radiates or detects a terahertz band signal. Therefore, analysis of a photoconductive antenna requires simultaneous solutions of both semiconductor physics equations (including drift-diffusion and continuity relations) and Maxwell’s equations. A …
An Approximation Method For Solving Complex Electromagnetics Problems Using The Volume Integral Equation, Ryan Nobis, Dan Jiao, Saad Omar
An Approximation Method For Solving Complex Electromagnetics Problems Using The Volume Integral Equation, Ryan Nobis, Dan Jiao, Saad Omar
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Solving complex electric field problems can lead researchers to a host of electronic characteristics about an inhomogeneous, complex object. However due to the complexity of these electric fields, a computer needs to be used in order to solve them. Due to the size of the matrices for some problems, methods for improving speed and performance for these algorithms are absolutely necessary. A Volume Integral Equation was used to solve the Electric Field Displacement, D, and approximate the differential term in this equation. The problem was next discretized using phasors, so that it can computationally be solved. Data used to form …
Investigating The Possible Sources Of Error Using The Method Of Moments To Solve A Dielectric Scattering Problem, Phillip D. Bishop
Investigating The Possible Sources Of Error Using The Method Of Moments To Solve A Dielectric Scattering Problem, Phillip D. Bishop
Master's Theses (2009 -)
In an electromagnetic scattering problem, an incoming electromagnetic wave interacts with an object. The object is typically located in some medium, such as free space. When this electromagnetic wave becomes incident upon the object, the wave scatters. The goal of this work is to analyze the scattered fields for three different incoming wave types: a plane wave, a monopole line source, and a multipole line source. Each source is incident on an infinitely long circular cylinder of lossless dielectric material. Each source has a unique scattering characteristic.
The volume equivalence principle is used to replace the object geometry with mathematically …

Constitutive Parameter Measurement Using Double Ridge Waveguide, Nathan J. Lehman
Theses and Dissertations
Electromagnetic materials characterization is important in the design of systems that interact with electromagnetic waves. Determining the constitutive parameters of a material is a vast area of research and practice. For this paper, discussion will focus on a destructive method using waveguides in the frequency range of 6-18 GHz. Traditional methods to perform similar measurements include using coaxial cable, stripline, focus beam and rectangular waveguides. This work will use Double Ridged Waveguide (DRWG) to compare to these other methods and will discuss the attributes and drawbacks of this new approach. The most similar method utilizes rectangular waveguide, so the primary …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The use of Graphical Processing Units (GPU's) for scientific applications has been evolving and expanding for the decade. GPU's provide an alternative to the CPU in the creation and execution of the numerical codes that are often relied upon in to perform simulations in computational electromagnetics. While originally designed purely to display graphics on the users monitor, GPU's today are essentially powerful floating point co-processors that can be programmed not only to render complex graphics, but also perform the complex mathematical calculations often encountered in scientific computing. Currently the GPU's being produced often contain hundreds of separate cores able to …
