Microwave Characterization Of Printable Dielectric Inks Using Additive Manufacturing Methods, Seth York Jul 2018

Microwave Characterization Of Printable Dielectric Inks Using Additive Manufacturing Methods, Seth York

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Two methods of dielectric characterization are presented that offer quick and cost-effective solutions for screening complex dielectric material properties. Through Direct-Print Additive Manufacturing (DPAM) methods, a dielectric material of choice is dispensed into a capacitor structure and characterized through 1-port s-parameter measurements. The presented methods use fixtures that are modeled and validated through simulation then implemented in practice. Advanced simulations are performed to gain insights which are used to optimize the dielectric characterization performance of the fixtures. Additional investigations are performed which investigate the durability of the fixture and material within by exposing the combination to rough environmental conditions for …

Novel Compact Narrow-Linewidth Mid-Infrared Lasers For Sensing Applications, Behsan Behzadi

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

The mid-infrared (2-14 μm) spectral region contains the strong absorption lines of many important molecular species, which make this region crucial for several well-know applications such as spectroscopy, chemical and biochemical sensing, security, and industrial monitoring. To fully exploit this region through absorption spectroscopic techniques, compact and low-cost narrow-linewidth (NLW) mid-infrared (MIR) laser sources are of primary importance.

This thesis is focused on three novel compact NLW MIR lasers: demonstration and characterization of a new glass-based spherical microlaser, investigation of the performance of a novel fiber laser, and the design of a monolithic laser on a silicon chip. Starting with …

The Relationship Between Electrical Conductivity And Magnetically Damped Motion, Kalem Akhtar Jun 2018

The Relationship Between Electrical Conductivity And Magnetically Damped Motion, Kalem Akhtar

The International Student Science Fair 2018

Varying electrical conductivities of different, non-magnetic metals appears to affect the magnitude of magnetically damped motion. To determine the relationship between magnetic damping and conductivity an experiment was designed using different length tubes of aluminium, copper and brass. The tubes had the same diameter and similar wall thickness. A short, cylindrical neodymium magnet was dropped through the tubes of and the time for the magnet to traverse the tube was recorded using a smartphone camera. These times allowed for the terminal velocity to be calculated for each metal length and the average terminal velocity for each metal was determined. This …

Imaging The Three-Dimensional Orientation And Rotational Mobility Of Fluorescent Emitters Using The Tri-Spot Point Spread Function, Oumeng Zhang, Jin Lu, Tianben Ding, Matthew D. Lew Jun 2018

Imaging The Three-Dimensional Orientation And Rotational Mobility Of Fluorescent Emitters Using The Tri-Spot Point Spread Function, Oumeng Zhang, Jin Lu, Tianben Ding, Matthew D. Lew

Electrical & Systems Engineering Publications and Presentations

Fluorescence photons emitted by single molecules contain rich information regarding their rotational motions, but adapting single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM) to measure their orientations and rotational mobilities with high precision remains a challenge. Inspired by dipole radiation patterns, we design and implement a Tri-spot point spread function (PSF) that simultaneously measures the three-dimensional orientation and the rotational mobility of dipole-like emitters across a large field of view. We show that the orientation measurements done using the Tri-spot PSF are sufficiently accurate to correct the anisotropy-based localization bias, from 30 nm to 7 nm, in SMLM. We further characterize the emission anisotropy …

Rotation Of Two-Petal Laser Beams In The Near Field Of A Spiral Microaxicon, S. S. Stafeev, Liam O'Faolain, M. V. Kotlyar

Cappa Publications

Using a spiral microaxicon with the topological charge 2 and NA = 0.6 operating at a 532-nm wavelength and fabricated by electron-beam lithography, we experimentally demonstrate the rotation of a two-petal laser beam in the near field (several micrometers away from the axicon surface). The estimated rotation rate is 55 °/mm and linearly dependent on the on-axis distance, with the theoretical rotation rate being 53 °/mm. The experimentally measured rotation rate is found to be linear and coincident with the simulation results only on the on-axis segment from 1.5 to 3 mm. The experimentally measured rotation rate is 66 °/mm …

Brushless Direct Current Motor Control For Inspired Flight, Aidan James Mccoy Jun 2018

Brushless Direct Current Motor Control For Inspired Flight, Aidan James Mccoy

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Brushless direct current motors have become a very common part of many modern electronics. Although they are more expensive and less robust than conventional brushed direct current motors, they provide large advantages in control, power output, longevity as well as efficiency. To make these motors run, they need more than just power. Each motor needs a separate motor controller that is responsible for taking in a signal for what speed/torque to run the motor at, and then managing the current flow to the motor to keep it spinning while fitting within these boundaries. Brushless direct current motors have a set …

As wireless protocols become easier to implement, more products come with wireless connectivity. This latest push for wireless connectivity has left a gap in the development of the security and the reliability of some protocols. These wireless protocols can be used in the growing field of IoT where wireless sensors are used to share information throughout a network. IoT is being implemented in homes, agriculture, manufactory, and in the medical field. Disrupting a wireless device from proper communication could potentially result in production loss, security issues, and bodily harm. The 802.15.4/ZigBee protocol is used in low power, low data rate, …

Adaptation Of Vt-Dbr Lasers For Lidar, Luke Horowitz Jun 2018

Adaptation Of Vt-Dbr Lasers For Lidar, Luke Horowitz

Master's Theses

Vernier Tuned Distributed Bragg Reflector (VT-DBR) lasers have had great success in the field of Swept-Source Optical Coherence Tomography (SS-OCT) due to their continuous and nearly 40 nm wavelength tuning range in a single longitudinal mode. Fast sweeps allow for real time imaging with micrometer resolution at a distance of a few centimeters. While this laser has proven quite useful as a medical imaging tool via OCT, it has yet to similarly prove itself for general light detection and ranging (LIDAR) applications due to range limitations that arise from a finite laser coherence length. The goal of this thesis is …

A Comparative Analysis Of Integrated Optical Waveguide Isolators With Magneto-Optic Layers, Reyhane Oztekin

Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study is to theoretically devise an on-chip optical isolator which is monolithically integrated with a semiconductor waveguide layer yielding low loss. The optical properties of iron are modeled for the use of optical waveguide isolators by improving the Brendel-Bormann model. Our model for iron shows excellent fit with the optical data up to 30 electronvolts (eV). The semiconductor optical waveguide isolator with magneto-optic layers based on non-reciprocal loss shift is developed in this study. Fe, Co, and Ni metals as well as cerium-substituted yttrium iron garnet (Ce:YIG) have been used as magneto-optic layers. We have shown …

Multiple-Photon Excitation Of Nitrogen Vacancy Centers In Diamond, Peng Ji, Ryan Balili, Jonathan Beaumariage, Silpa Mukherjee Apr 2018

Multiple-Photon Excitation Of Nitrogen Vacancy Centers In Diamond, Peng Ji, Ryan Balili, Jonathan Beaumariage, Silpa Mukherjee

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

We report the observation of multiphoton photoluminescence excitation (PLE) below the resonant energies of nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. The quadratic and cubic dependence of the integrated fluorescence intensity as a function of excitation power indicates a two-photon excitation pathway for the NV- charge state and a three-photon process involved for the neutral NV0 charge state, respectively. Comparing the total multiphoton energy with its single-photon equivalent, the PLE spectra follows the absorption spectrum of single photon excitation. We also observed that the efficiency of photoluminescence for different charge states, as well as the decay time constant, was dependent on …

An Exploration Of The Optical Detection Of Ionizing Radiation Utilizing Modern Optics Technology, Sean D. Fournier, Adam Hecht, Cassiano De Oliveira, Jeffrey B. Martin, Richard K. Harrison, Charles Potter

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

Modern ultraviolet (UV) cameras, when combined with UV-transmitting lenses/filter arrangements, can be used to detect radiation dose in air. Ionizing radiation excites nitrogen molecules in ambient air, the resulting decay includes weak emission of ultraviolet photons. Previous work has proven this phenomenon is detectable using highly-sensitive electronically cooled cameras traditionally used in astronomy for low-background imaging. While the ability to detect the presence of radiation (i.e. qualitative measurement) has been demonstrated at Sandia National Laboratories, there are several challenges in correlating images to known dose-fields (quantitative measurement). These challenges include: a low signal to background ratio, interferences due to electronic …

This is achieved by spatially modulating the images so that they are placed at different locations in the …

Plasmonic Structures For Subwavelength Guiding And Enhanced Light-Matter Interactions, Amirreza Mahigir Apr 2018

Plasmonic Structures For Subwavelength Guiding And Enhanced Light-Matter Interactions, Amirreza Mahigir

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation we design and analyze nanostructures for subwavelength guiding and enhanced light-matter interactions.

We first investigate three-dimensional plasmonic waveguide-cavity structures, built by side-coupling stub resonators that consist of plasmonic coaxial waveguides of finite length, to a plasmonic coaxial waveguide. These structures are capable of guiding and manipulating light in deep-subwavelength volumes. We show that three-dimensional plasmonic coaxial waveguides offer a platform for practical realization of deep-subwavelength optical waveguides.

We then introduce compact wavelength-scale slit-based structures for coupling free space light into the fundamental mode of plasmonic coaxial waveguides. We consider single-, double-, and triple-slit structures optimized at the …

Circularly Polarized Two-Dimensional Microstrip Standing-Wave Array Antenna, Yang Fan Apr 2018

Circularly Polarized Two-Dimensional Microstrip Standing-Wave Array Antenna, Yang Fan

Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation reviews current designs of single-fed circularly polarized microstrip antennas and proposes a novel design concept with improved performance. The structure is similar to a regular microstrip patch antenna and the design procedure is relatively simple. By extending this SF scheme to an array structure based on the standing-wave array concept, a novel circular polarized array antenna can be realized by using one SF CP patch with standing-wave feeding networks. The standing-wave array antenna developed at SMU has a low-profile planar configuration and a simple feeding network structure and thus can be fabricated easily and cheaply with relatively high …

Non-Invasive Picosecond Pulse System For Electrostimulation, Ross Aaron Petrella Apr 2018

Non-Invasive Picosecond Pulse System For Electrostimulation, Ross Aaron Petrella

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Picosecond pulsed electric fields have been shown to have stimulatory effects, such as calcium influx, activation of action potential, and membrane depolarization, on biological cells. Because the pulse duration is so short, it has been hypothesized that the pulses permeate a cell and can directly affect intracellular cell structures by bypassing the shielding of the membrane. This provides an opportunity for studying new biophysics. Furthermore, radiating picosecond pulses can be efficiently done by a compact antenna because the antenna size is comparable to the pulse width. However, all of the previous bioelectric studies regarding picosecond pulses have been conducted in …

Quantification Of The Impact Of Photon Distinguishability On Measurement-Device- Independent Quantum Key Distribution, Garrett K. Simon, Blake K. Huff, William M. Meier, Logan O. Mailloux, Lee E. Harrell

Faculty Publications

Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution (MDI-QKD) is a two-photon protocol devised to eliminate eavesdropping attacks that interrogate or control the detector in realized quantum key distribution systems. In MDI-QKD, the measurements are carried out by an untrusted third party, and the measurement results are announced openly. Knowledge or control of the measurement results gives the third party no information about the secret key. Error-free implementation of the MDI-QKD protocol requires the crypto-communicating parties, Alice and Bob, to independently prepare and transmit single photons that are physically indistinguishable, with the possible exception of their polarization states. In this paper, we apply the …

Dual Source Excitation Rectangular Waveguide Design And Evaluation For The Measurement Of Electromagnetic Material Properties, Daniel K. Koch Mar 2018

Dual Source Excitation Rectangular Waveguide Design And Evaluation For The Measurement Of Electromagnetic Material Properties, Daniel K. Koch

Theses and Dissertations

Broadband material parameter measurements are essential in understanding how materials interact with electromagnetic waves. Traditional rectangular waveguide material measurement systems are bandwidth limited. This results in multiple rectangular waveguides of different sizes used to conduct broadband material parameter extraction. Efforts to produce a broadband rectangular waveguide have focused on the inclusion of different guiding structures in the waveguide body. These designs have the drawback of requiring precise machining and time-consuming sample preparation. This research proposes a new broadband rectangular waveguide design which uses a dual source excitation design. This is enabled by the fact that rectangular waveguides are linear time …

Demonstration Of Versatile Whispering-Gallery Micro-Lasers For Remote Refractive Index Sensing, Lei Wan, Hengky Chandrahalim, Jian Zhou Mar 2018

Demonstration Of Versatile Whispering-Gallery Micro-Lasers For Remote Refractive Index Sensing, Lei Wan, Hengky Chandrahalim, Jian Zhou

Faculty Publications

We developed chip-scale remote refractive index sensors based on Rhodamine 6G (R6G)-doped polymer micro-ring lasers. The chemical, temperature, and mechanical sturdiness of the fused-silica host guaranteed a flexible deployment of dye-doped polymers for refractive index sensing. The introduction of the dye as gain medium demonstrated the feasibility of remote sensing based on the free-space optics measurement setup. Compared to the R6G-doped TZ-001, the lasing behavior of R6G-doped SU-8 polymer micro-ring laser under an aqueous environment had a narrower spectrum linewidth, producing the minimum detectable refractive index change of 4 x 10−4 RIU. The maximum bulk refractive index sensitivity (BRIS) …

Coaxial Magnetic Gearbox With A Flux Concentration Halbach Rotor And Consequent Pole Rotor Typology, Ho Yin Wong Mar 2018

Coaxial Magnetic Gearbox With A Flux Concentration Halbach Rotor And Consequent Pole Rotor Typology, Ho Yin Wong

Electrical and Computer Engineering PhD Day

This paper presents the performance comparison between a flux concentration and triple permanent magnet consequent pole magnetic gear rotor typology with the same 7.5:1 gear ratio. The triple permanent magnet consequent pole magnetic gear is unique in that it can create torque change through two field heterodyning pole combinations. The performance with respect to volumetric and mass torque density is considered. It is shown that the flux concentration typology can operate with a higher mass and volumetric higher torque density, even when using a low flux concentration ratio rotor.
