Minimizing Sheet Resistance Of Organic Photovoltaic Cell Top Contact Electrode Layer: Silver Nanowire Concentration Vs. Conductive Polymer Doping Concentration, Caitlyn Cook
Materials Engineering
The top contact electrode layers of nine organic photovoltaic cells were prepared with two varying factors: three Silver nanowire (AgNW) densities deposited on a conductive polymer doped with three concentrations. Silver’s low sheet resistance of 20-Ω/sq is hypothesized to lower the sheet resistance of the anode layer and thus enhance the overall efficiency of the cell. Four-point probe measurements indicated that increasing AgNW density in the top contact electrode layer of an organic photovoltaic cell significantly reduces sheet resistance from 52.2k-Ω/sq to 18.0 Ω/sq. Although an increase in doping concentration of the conductive polymer reduced sheet resistance in low AgNW …

Sweep Stability Characterization Of A Vernier-Tuned Distributed Bragg Reflector (Vt-Dbr) All-Semiconductor Tunable Swept Laser System At 1550 Nm For Sensing Applications, Roric Christian Martens Biersach
Master's Theses
The short-term jitter and longer-term wander of the frequency sweep profile of a Vernier-Tuned Distributed Bragg Reflector (VT-DBR) laser at 1550 nm used in optical coherence tomography (OCT) and other sensing applications is characterized in this work. The VT-DBR has demonstrated success in source-swept OCT (SSOCT), performing both intensity and phase-sensitive OCT.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate one of the unique aspects of the VT-DBR laser that makes it successful in OCT: the stability of the linear optical frequency sweep. A highly stable linear optical frequency sweep implies benefits for further fiber sensing applications including fiber Bragg …
The Electric Reel For Soccer Fields, Stephen Taylor
The Electric Reel For Soccer Fields, Stephen Taylor
Electrical Engineering
Painting a soccer field consumes too much time. The process of reeling the string after laying out string along the field needs to improve. As a result, my project addresses improvements in how the workers retrieve the string through the production of an electric reel. This electric reel allows the worker to have control of the speed, direction, and on/off state of the device. Direction control allows the user ability to reel and unwind the string. Variable speed allows the user to control how fast the reel unwinds and reels the string. The device gathers string in an orderly manner …

Long distance mountain bikers, bike-packers, and many bikers in developing countries rely on electrical devices for safety and communication. These specific groups of people operate in areas with little to no electricity, and often times have no power to sustain their devices. The purpose of this Cal Poly senior project, VeloElectric, was to design, build, and test a kinetic energy harvester for bicycles that can be used to charge common mobile devices via USB. This senior project team created a device that attaches directly to a bicycle and uses vibrations to generate energy, which in turn powers a variety of …

Master's Theses
Insight Photonic Solutions Inc. has continued to develop their patented VT-DBR laser design; these wavelength tunable lasers promise marked image-quality and acquisition time improvements in SS-OCT applications.
To be well suited for SS-OCT, tunable lasers must be capable of producing a highly linear wavelength sweep across a tuning range well-matched to the medium being imaged; many different tunable lasers used in SS-OCT are compared to identify the optimal solution.
This work electrically and spectrally characterizes two completely new all-semiconductor VT-DBR designs to compare, as well. The Neptune VT-DBR, an O-band laser, operates around the 1310 nm range and is a …

A system and method of generating and comparing a fingerprint for an integrated circuit is provided. A sensor module captures electromagnetic emissions from the integrated circuit. A feature extraction module extracts discriminating features from the captured electromagnetic emissions. A classifier training module generates a plurality of authentication fingerprints of the integrated circuit from the extracted discriminating features creating a reference fingerprint template for the integrated circuit. The reference template for the integrated circuit is stored in a database. For authentication, the reference fingerprint template from the database is compared to the generated authentication fingerprint.

A 433 MHz antenna is proposed for integration with the insole of footwear for a body area network. The folded dipole design with an asymmetric groundplane radiates from its edges and considers the close proximity of the human foot and ground surfaces. It functions for different ground conductivity conditions and an on-body communication link with an Inverted F Antenna in the upper body area was evaluated on a static and dynamic human subject. The antenna solution was compliant with Specific Absorption Rate requirements, remains matched and links with upper-body nodes regardless of the body posture and node location.

We present new pulmonary nodule segmentation algorithms for computed tomography (CT). These include a fully-automated (FA) system, a semi-automated (SA) system, and a hybrid system. Like most traditional systems, the new FA system requires only a single user-supplied cue point. On the other hand, the SA system represents a new algorithm class requiring 8 user-supplied control points. This does increase the burden on the user, but we show that the resulting system is highly robust and can handle a variety of challenging cases. The proposed hybrid system starts with the FA system.
If improved segmentation results are needed, the SA …

Magnetic Amplifiers For Voltage Regulation Applications, Casey Morgan O'Grady
Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to present research on magnetic amplifiers and to discuss how magnetic amplifiers are useful in voltage regulation applications. Beginning with a background in magnetics and magnetic properties, this thesis outlines the importance of the B-H curve and explains how to simulate the B-H curve of a saturable inductor using LtSpice. Furthermore, two saturable inductors can be aligned in antiparallel to create a magnetic amplifier. The theory of magnetic amplifiers is dated, but its simplistic design has benefits for modern applications. The magnetic amplifier acts as a variable impedance switch where a small amount of …

Top-Down Aluminum Induced Crystallization For Photovoltaics, Seth Daniel Shumate
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Passivating silicon solar cell surfaces is critical to fabricating very high efficiency and low cost photovoltaic devices. The sun-facing surface of the solar cell, known as the emitter, is particularly important when designing a solar cell. This work focused first on an alternative method of forming the emitter of silicon solar cells, and secondly on a method for improving the surface passivation of both these non-traditional and standard n-type solar cells.
Top-down aluminum induced crystallization (TAIC) was used for forming a polycrystalline silicon layer from amorphous silicon using aluminum to catalyze the crystallization at much lower temperatures than otherwise possible. …

Large-Scale Graphene Film Deposition For Monolithic Device Fabrication, Khaled Al-Shurman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Since 1958, the concept of integrated circuit (IC) has achieved great technological developments and helped in shrinking electronic devices. Nowadays, an IC consists of more than a million of compacted transistors.
The majority of current ICs use silicon as a semiconductor material. According to Moore's law, the number of transistors built-in on a microchip can be double every two years. However, silicon device manufacturing reaches its physical limits. To explain, there is a new trend to shrinking circuitry to seven nanometers where a lot of unknown quantum effects such as tunneling effect can not be controlled. Hence, there is an …

Reducing Radio Frequency Susceptibilities In Commercial-Off-The-Shelf Camera Equipment For Use In Electromagnetic Compatibility Testing, Kevin Mainini
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Technical Testing and Analysis Center (TTAC) Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory performs electromagnetic compatibility testing on various radiation detection units. These tests require remote viewing of the equipment’s display to monitor its compliance with national and international standards. The Commercial-Off-the-Shelf (COTS) camera equipment that is used to monitor the displays exhibits radio frequency susceptibilities causing issues when determining the actual susceptibilities of the device under test. In order to mitigate this issue, a COTS camera was placed in two common test positions and cycled through three angled orientations with various radio frequency shielding methods applied. The development of …

Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Arrays For High Frequency Applications, Asmaa Elkadi
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents a thorough analysis of semiconducting Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube-based devices, followed by a test structure fabrication and measurements.
The analysis starts by developing an individual nanotube model, which is then generalized for many nanotubes and adding the parasitic elements. The parasitic elements appear when forming the device electrodes degrade the overall performance.
The continuum model of an individual nanotube is developed. A unique potential function is presented to effectively describe the electron distribution in the carbon nanotube subsequently facilitating solving Schrödinger's equation to obtain the energy levels, and to generalize the model for many nanotubes.
It is shown …

A circularly polarized solar cell antenna consisting of four sequentially rotated printed inverted-F antennas is proposed. Four multicrystalline silicon solar cells act as the ground plane and the antenna is suitable for low power airborne communication nodes and wireless sensor networks. The antenna design was developed to allow 100% insolation of the cells when directly facing a light source. The low-profile antenna minimises shadowing of the solar cell for oblique angle insolation.

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is used to identify a new and unique photoactive silicon-related point defect in single crystals of rutile TiO2. The importance of this defect lies in its assignment to interstitial silicon ions and the unexpected establishment of silicon impurities as a major hole trap in TiO2. Principal g values of this new S=1/2 center are 1.9159, 1.9377, and 1.9668 with principal axes along the [¯110],[001], and [110] directions, respectively. Hyperfine structure in the EPR spectrum shows the unpaired spin interacting equally with two Ti nuclei and unequally with two Si nuclei. These silicon …

Circular Bessel Field Statistics And The Pursuit Of Far-Subwavelength Resolution, Yulu Chen
Open Access Dissertations
The statistical description of wave propagation in random media is important for many applications. While polarized light in systems with weakly interacting scatterers and sufficient overall scatter has zero-mean circular Gaussian statistics, the underlying assumptions break down in the Anderson localization and weakly scattering regimes. Although probability density functions for wave intensity and amplitude exist beyond Gaussian statistics, suitable statistical descriptions for the field with strong and weak random scatter were unknown. The first analytical probability density function for the field that is effective in both the Anderson localization regime and the weakly scattering regime is derived by modeling the …
On Pattern Reconfigurable Antennas Steered By Modulation Scheme, Adam Narbudowicz, Max Ammann, Dirk Heberling
On Pattern Reconfigurable Antennas Steered By Modulation Scheme, Adam Narbudowicz, Max Ammann, Dirk Heberling
Conference papers
The paper demonstrates how a modulation constellation can be used to steer the radiation pattern of a reconfigurable omnidirectional circularly polarized antenna. The proposed approach offers the benefit of digital beamforming while using a single antenna: the steering can be executed by low frequency electronics and independently for each frequency channel. In the proposed study, the antenna is excited by a signal generated by two I/Q modulators. By appropriately changing the I and Q components, a phase shift is generated which effectively steers the radiation pattern. The results were achieved using cosimulation between CST Microwave Studio and CST Design Studio.

The combination of numerical analysis with the scanning technology has been seeing increased use in many research areas. There is an emerging need for high-fidelity geometric modeling and meshing for practical applications. The Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) is a comprehensive computational framework, which integrates geometric modeling and meshing with analysis. Different from other existing numerical methods, the IGA can generate analysis ready models without loss of geometrical accuracy. In IGA, the continuity and the quality of a solution can be conveniently controlled and refined. These features enable IGA to integrate modeling, analysis, and design in a unified framework, the root idea …
Computational Electromagnetic Studies For Low-Frequency Compensation Of The Reflector Impulse-Radiating Antenna, Casey E. Fillmore
Computational Electromagnetic Studies For Low-Frequency Compensation Of The Reflector Impulse-Radiating Antenna, Casey E. Fillmore
Theses and Dissertations
The reflector impulse-radiating antenna (IRA) is considered to meet the requirement for a wideband, directional antenna with short temporal response and small electrical footprint. Standard reflector IRA designs are modeled and performance is simulated using full-wave computational electromagnetic (CEM) software. Characterization of the standard designs reveals the possible existence of wide, frequency-independent backlobes containing nearly 40% of the radiated power at high frequencies. These undesirable backlobes have never been hypothesized, predicted or measured, likely due in part to their alignment outside the primary measurement planes. At the lowest operating frequencies, the reflector IRA is unaffected by backlobes, but is characterized …

Investigation Of Electromagnetic Velocities And Negative Refraction In A Chiral Metamaterial With Second-Order Material Dispersion Using Spectral Analyses And Dispersive Models, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Tarig A. Algadey
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In recent years, considerable research has been carried out relative to the electromagnetic (EM) propagation and refraction characteristics in metamaterials with emphasis on the origins of negative refractive index.
Negative refractive index may be introduced in metamaterials via different methods; one such is the condition whereby the Poynting vector of the EM wave is in opposition to the group velocity in the material. Alternatively, negative refractive index also occurs when the group and phase velocities in the medium are in opposition. The latter phenomenon has been extensively investigated in the literature, including recent work involving chiral metamaterials with material dispersion …

A simple and flexible method is presented for the generation of optical focal field with prescribed characteristics. By reversing the field pattern radiated from a uniform line source, for which the electric current is constant along its extent, situated at the focus of a 4Pi focusing system formed by two confocal high-NA objective lenses, the required illumination distribution at the pupil plane for creating optical focal field with desired properties can be obtained. Numerical example shows that an arbitrary length optical needle with extremely high longitudinal polarization purity and consistent transverse size of ~0.36λ over the entire depth of focus …
