Synthesis And Application Of Ceramic Paste For High-Temperature Electronic Packaging, Ardalan Nasiri

This dissertation research focused on the synthesis and application of ceramic paste for high-temperature applications. An alumina paste material comprising aluminum dihydric phosphate and alumina powder was developed for high-temperature electronic packaging. Nano aluminum nitride and nano-silica powders were embedded to promote the paste curing process, limit the grain growth, and increase its bond shear strength. The chip-to-substrate bond strength was enhanced and met the MIL-STD requirements for die-attach assembly. Its encapsulation property was improved with fewer cracks compared to similar commercial ceramic encapsulants. The die-attach material and encapsulation properties tested at 500°C showed no defect or additional cracks. Thermal …

The work that follows examines the impact of lead sulfide quantum dots on a native epitaxial graphene (EG) SiC Schottky device, resulting in a hybrid optoelectronic device which presents a possible avenue towards a novel hybrid carbide-based Schottky solar cell. The active (n-type SiC) and contact (graphene) layers for the Schottky junction of the device were grown epitaxially using a novel technique incorporating tetrafluorosilane (TFS) as a precursor gas. The bare EG/SiC device was characterized based on its I-V behavior in dark and under illumination for both forward and reverse bias conditions. In rural areas where electric power grid network is rarely available, power generation from renewable energy resource such as solar photovoltaic (PV) is mostly accomplished in standalone mode. The standalone solar PV system requires energy storage device to achieve reliable power supply to the end users. This paper presents modelling and coordination control of solar PV with battery energy storage system (BESS) for rural-electrification applications. The proposed control is accomplished via a bidirectional buck-boost converter with the objective of maintaining voltage at the DC bus constant. The use of nonlinear circuits of an autoparametric nature with inductive and capacitive elements for obtaining the necessary phase shifts in single-phase-three-phase converters is considered. The amplitude-phase relations between the stresses of windings located on different rods of a three-core core are obtained. The conditions under which it is possible to stabilize the stresses of the artificial phases of the Converter, as well as the phase shifts between them, are shown.

Calibration of a radiometry system uses a readout circuit of a photo-detector to provide first and second measurements collected over first and second integration times, respectively, where the first and second measurements are related to a photonic input to the photo-detector by a gain and a bias. First mean and variance values are computed for a plurality of first measurements. Second mean and variance values are computed for a plurality of second measurements. This paper describes a method of estimating distance via Time-of-Flight (TOF) measurement using ultrasonic Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signals. Using OFDM signals allows the signals and their sub-carriers to remain orthogonal to each other while continuously transmitting. This estimation method is based on the change of phase of a traveling wave as it propagates through a medium (air for ultrasonic signals). By using signals containing multiple tones, the phase change between each frequency component is slightly different. The device indicates to the worker whether to leave one, two, or three nodes on a cane. Currently, the only communication firefighters have is with Very High Frequency (VHF) 160 MHz band analog radios. Contamination of low-moisture foods including flour, wheat grain, baby formula, and more, have increasingly become a concern due to sanitizing challenges. While industrial food processors have long used RF heating to sanitize mass quantities, an equivalent consumer device is absent from the market today. The Characterization of Effective Electromagnetic Fields on the Safety and Quality of Low-Moisture Foods (EEFS) project is an interdisciplinary effort to develop an RF heating consumer device to sanitize low-moisture foods.

The RaySuns senior project team was tasked with lowering the drying costs of raisins for River Ranch Raisins. In doing so, we explored several options for cutting costs: utilizing automation and exploring new drying technologies were our primary focus. We eventually planned a modular infrared heating mechanism which would be easy to automate in future projects. After manufacturing and testing an infrared heating mechanism, it was found that infrared drying could significantly cut costs versus the previous natural gas fired dryer tunnels while leaving room for automation.
