This thesis presents the development and implementation of an intelligent electrocardiogram tutoring package, namely, EKGCHALLENGER which is meant for use in medical schools to teach medical students a method of diagnosing electro cardiograms.
EKGCHALLENGER is an IBM - PC based, user friendly package. It works in two basic modes. The first is a tutorial mode wherein the user is taught the step-by-step diagnosis of electrocardiograms ( EKGs ) which are presented in order of increasing difficulty. Trellis encoding of correlative-FM is studied from the point of view of the overall structure, performance, bandwidth occupancy, and complexity. Here, correlative (partial-response) coding is used to improve the bandwidth efficiency of MSK (Minimum-Shift Keying) at the expense of performance. Then, trellis codes are used to improve the error-rate performance of the corresponding correlative-FM scheme with little or no increase in bandwidth occupancy (compared to uncoded MSK). In a sense, this is similar to Ungerboeck's coding for (memoryless) PSK modulation.

Wave propagation in an optically active isotropic, polymeric thin film waveguides is studied. The waveguides are fabricated using the dipping method. Thin film layers are composed of a passive PMMA (poly methyl methacrylate) host material and a chiral, optically active, ((s)-(+)-1,1'-Binaphthyl-2,2'-dily hydro phosphate), guest material. Experimental results show about 1° per centimeter rotation of polarization as light propagates through a 1.8cm waveguide. The theoretical analysis of the mode structure and wave propagation in the waveguide are examined using first order coupled mode theory. TE (-4 TM mode converter is a typical application of this investigation.

In this thesis, the applicability of an inverse scattering technique for an optical waveguide with imperfect boundaries is investigated. The inversion of imperfect boundaries of waveguides is different from usual inverse scattering algorithms because only eigenmodes can propagate in a waveguide. We suggest a parametric inversion method based on the first-order coupled mode equation. The validity and usefulness of the method are demonstrated using examples of periodic and almost periodic imperfect boundaries.

A simulation model to analyze the performance of CSMA/CD protocol is developed. CSIM, a process oriented simulation language, is used. Performance measures such as throughput, average delay and maximum delay per packet are presented. System performance is analyzed for different loads, number of stations, and network lengths, with packet length as parameter. By trading off the throughput and delay time, an optium packet length can be selected from simulated performance curves. A general scheme for MAC protocols modeling is provided.

This thesis describes the design including specification, schematics,logic and circuit simulation, and standard cell layout for a CMOS mixed-mode I.C. for interfacing sensors into a robotics local area network. The network accepts up to 256 interface chips as nodes in each area. A simple network protocol permits acquisition of digital data from the interface nodes through gateways into ARCNET and MAP.
The sensor chip interfaces directly from analog signals of range 0-1V and 0-20mV. It contains an 8-bit ADC. The application I.C. interfaces to sensors for pressure, tactile stress, humidity, temperature, etc.

Based on the anatomical structure, a structural model of the visual system was established. System responses of different stimulations were analyzed based on the model. More extensive study was made on the system impulse response. A mathematical model with parameters representing prominent process components was developed to represent the system response in a compact form and the parameters were statistically studied to correlate to the real physiological characteristics of the visual system. A powerful computer-aided root-locus method is described and applied to the compensation for SI/SO systems. The approach is based on the concept of continuation methods in which the solution of a parameterized family of algebraic problems is converted into the solution of a differential equation and incorporates the quadratic synthetic division technique. The root-locus is obtained in a systematic manner by numerical integration. Breakaway points are analyzed and classified according to the properties of higher order derivatives. A Turbo Pascal(4.0) program which utilizes the algorithm has been written.

We introduce a new concept, called matched punctured trellis encoding, that simplifies the complexity of Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation (MLSE) receivers for combined trellis encoding and modulations with memory. Matched punctured trellis encoding is applied to tamed frequency modulation (TFM) which is a bandwidth efficient correlative - FM scheme. TFM finds applications in satellite, microwave radio, and mobile communications.

In this thesis, an image coding scheme based upon dynamic quantizations and Differential Pulse Code Miodulalton (DPCM) is studied for application in digital image transmission. This scheme achieves a degree of data compression, and at the same time, maintains an acceptable degraded Mean Square Error (MSE) in the reproduced image. The image to be transmitted is first divided into blocks and each block is then quantized before transmission. CALDAC, which stands for Computer-Assisted Lighting Design and Control, is a design environment integrating two present day state-of-the-art theatrical lighting computer aides, the computer-aided design (CAD) program and the preset storage system. The microwave interferometer is utilized to pick up vibrations of the anterior (front) chest wall, produced by cardiac activity. This instrument is capable of remotely measuring the vibrations at distances up to four feet through clothing, by using low level microwave energy at 9.3 Ghz. The vibrations picked up from subjects are filtered, and processed through a PC to correlate with EKG signals, and thereby evaluate the instrument as a non-invasive, non-contacting cardiac monitor.

In this thesis, the effects of high frequency noise on a perturbational inversion algorithm for a stratified dispersive medium are investigated. It is shown that the perturbational algorithm becomes unstable under high frequency noise. The physical origin of this instability is discussed.
In order to enhance the robustness of the perturbational inverse scattering solution, a parametric inversion algorithm is implemented. The improvement by the use of a parametric inversion is given quantitatively by the profile-to-error ratio (PER). Examples of the two-pole and the three-pole reflection coefficients are compared and contrasted.

An efficient scheme for video sequence coding is presented here. The interframe redundancy present in the video sequence is exploited by motion compensation using the efficient independent orthogonal search technique, which requires least number of computations in the worst case. The motion compensated frame difference signal is encoded with a new technique — subband adaptive vector quantization.
Subband coding like transform coding results in signals of unequal energy patterns, which is efficiently utilized for bit allocation. Previous study of a simplified identification/counter model (1), (2) indicated bifurcations in its behavior. In order to study this topic, graphical representations of the system dynamics are derived. Analysis of the structure of the identification/counter model reveals the reasons why the graphs assume their given shapes.
The graphical representations of the system are used to characterize the system behavior and thus explain the bifurcations previously encountered. In this thesis convolutional coded continuous-phase frequency shift keying (CPFSK) is studied.
CPFSK which is a subclass of continuous phase modulation ( CPM ) is a constant amplitude digital modulation scheme with very good spectral characteristics.
A new method, called matched encoding, that combines convolutional codes and CPFSK is studied. With the maximum free Euclidean distance as the optimization criterion, the best combined coded schemes were found for the same rate of the codes and given total number of states in the optimum decoder.
