On-Line Blood Glucose Control System, Huan Zheng May 1988

On-Line Blood Glucose Control System, Huan Zheng

Theses

A method has been developed that can monitor and control the meal initiation of rats. The goal of studying meal initiation is to find a mechanism of control of the diet, based upon the assumption that the body weight is closely related to feeding behavior. If the feeding behavior can be controlled, then the body weight can be controlled. The experimental system has two major functions: (1) Continuous measurement and recording of the blood glucose concentration and meal pattern of rats. (2) Automatic or manual infusing of glucose or other substances to the rats intravenously.

For blood glucose concentration and …

C/Ku Band Satellite Television Reception System, Costas A. Economides

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to examine and investigate the design of a satellite reception system able to receive most C and Ku band North American geostationary satellites' TV transmissions. The performance criterion used for the system design is based on a required demodulated video signal-to-noise ratio maintained for a specified percentage of time in conjunction with overall cost considerations.

Furthermore, a computer program written in FORTRAN 77 is developed, which among other functions lists the notified, operational, geostationary satellites in sight with their corresponding look angles, from any given location on the earth.

The Tapered Dielectric Rod-Conical Antenna, Nicholas I. Georghiades May 1988

The Tapered Dielectric Rod-Conical Antenna, Nicholas I. Georghiades

Theses

The problem of the linearly tapered dielectric rod/conical antenna, excited by the HEI1 hybrid mode in a metallic circular waveguide , is rigorously studied. A theoretical model, and numerical investigation for the radiation characteristics of such an antenna are presented. The model is based on the combination of classical analysis of the Electromagnetic Fields within the dielectric rod, Local Mode Theory, and the Equivalence Principle for the determination of equivalent current distributions.

The far-zone radiation field is considered to be the summation of the fields produced by two radiative components in the dielectric rod/conical structure: The "aperture" of the uniform …

Theses

In this thesis, a second-order, type-one PLL ( Phase- Lock, Loop ) in which the usual lead-lag loop filter is paralleled with a Hilbert Transformer (the whole system is called HPLL) is analyzed. A motivation for the study was that earlier researchers have found improved performance if Ilse lead-lag network is paralleled by a differentiator, result mg in the so called ERPIM (Extended-Range Phase-Locked Demodulator). For the purpose of com-parison with earlier experimental and analytical results on the PLL and the ERPLD, the numerical results in this thesis ale based on the parameters of Acampora and Newton.

The basic characteristics …

Simulation Study Of The Multi-H Continuous Phase Modulation, Min-Ling Lin May 1988

Simulation Study Of The Multi-H Continuous Phase Modulation, Min-Ling Lin

Theses

Of particular interest in satellite communications are modulation techniques that have a relatively constant envelope and are power and bandwidth efficient. Attempts have been made to satisfy these requirements by using phase and frequency modulation formats. Recently, one approach has been researched which combines the modulation and encoding functions, which is referred to as multi-h continuous phase modulation. Simultaneously good power and bandwidth efficiencies can be achieved at the expense of increased complexity.

This report examines the performance of multi-h continuous phase modulation by a simulation. A multi-h phase coded modulation is generated, passed through the AWGN transmission channel. The …

Microprocessor Testing And Computer Aided Diagnosability Of Digital Circuits, Shirish Patel

Theses

Computer Aided Diagnosability Of Circuits (CADOC), a new method is developed for isolating and pin-pointing a faulty device in digital circuits. CADOC is based on graph-theoretic principle and PFD numbers. Without considering any SA1 or SAO faults, we can zoom out faulty device by selecting different diagnostic path to narrow down the faulty region and to isolate the faulty device. The efficiency of this new technique is confirmed by applying the technique to many examples.

Study Of Dynamic Cmos Families And Development Of Certain Guidelines For Logic Synthesis, Vinay Santurkar

Theses

This work studies in detail two dynamic logic families, namely Zipper and Nora. It compares their performance using SPICE, a popular circuit simulator. Results show that a novel clocking scheme and a different latch circuit for the Nora pipelined structure can push its maximum clock rate of CMOS Dynamic circuits higher. It also ascertains whether the increased complexity of NORA is justified compared to the simpler Zipper circuit. It is shown that for very long logic chains, Nora works faster than Zipper. The work also presents some guidelines for synthesis of logic functions using CMOS Dynamic Cells. It shows that …

On Conventional And Harmonic Load Flow Analysis, Ranjit B. Pradhan May 1988

On Conventional And Harmonic Load Flow Analysis, Ranjit B. Pradhan

Theses

In conventional power flow analysis, simultaneous linear equations numbering in thousands must be solved repeatedly and in many instances on-line. Luckily the matrix of coefficients of these equations is sparse with a few elements in each row. Therefore for a faster solution and to save computer memory, sparsity must be exploited and an optimal ordering of the equations must be sought. When considering harmonics, the number of the simultaneous equations to be solved is multiplied and therefore, considering sparsity and optimal ordering is doubly important.

In this thesis a software package for optimizing computation time and memory requirements through exploitation …

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The four-detector photopolarimeter (FDP) is analyzed for an arbitrary spatial configuration and any reflection characteristics (ri, ψi, Δi) of the first three detectors. The instrument matrix A, which relates the output signal vector I to the input Stokes vector S by I = AS, and its determinant are derived explicitly. The essential condition that A be nonsingular (det A ≠ 0) is satisfied in general with uncoated absorbing detector surfaces, assuming that the plane of incidence (POI) is rotated between successive reflections by other than 90°. Therefore no special coatings on …

The Switch Capacitor Biquad Filter And It's Application On Active Filter Design, Sung-Chiang Chang Jan 1988

The Switch Capacitor Biquad Filter And It's Application On Active Filter Design, Sung-Chiang Chang

Theses

The purpose of this subject is to use the programmable switch capacitor filter to design a traditional analog filter which usually cause a tedious job on finding a group of values for resistors and capacitors. We start from the basic concept of switch capacitor, then we learn to use auxiliary equipment to design a filter. To design the desired filter, first, we have to find the s-domain transfer function, then transfer it to the z-domain. After we found the coefficients of z-domain transfer function, we have to implement this on the auxiliary equipment. Then we will get the desired filter.

A Bulk Optically Controlled Semiconductor Switch, Rudolf K.F. Germer, Karl H. Schoenbach, Stephen G.E. Pronko Jan 1988

A Bulk Optically Controlled Semiconductor Switch, Rudolf K.F. Germer, Karl H. Schoenbach, Stephen G.E. Pronko

Bioelectrics Publications

Turn‐on and turn‐off of bulk semiconductor switches, based on excitation and quenching of photoconductivity, respectively, have been demonstrated with copper‐doped II‐VI semiconductor crystals. The increase of the conductivity (turn‐on) was realized with a xenon flash‐lamp pulse of 15‐μs duration. A reduction of the conductivity (turn‐off) was obtained by irradiating the samples with IR light using an 8‐ns Nd:YAG laser pulse (YAG denotes yttrium aluminum garnet). For turn‐on in CdS:Cu the conductivity follows the xenon flash excitation. The turn‐off time constant was 250 ns. ZnS and ZnSe crystals showed a slower response. A memory effect for the IR light was observed.

A Modified Extended Kalman Filter As A Parameter Estimator For Linear Discrete-Time Systems, Bruno Johannes Schnekenburger Jan 1988

A Modified Extended Kalman Filter As A Parameter Estimator For Linear Discrete-Time Systems, Bruno Johannes Schnekenburger

Theses

This thesis presents the derivation and implementation of a modified Extended Kalman Filter used for Joint state and parameter estimation of linear discrete-time systems operating in a, stochastic Gaussian environment. A novel derivation for the discrete-time Extended Kalman Filter is also presented. In order to eliminate the main deficiencies of the Extended Kalman Filter, which are divergence and biasedness of its estimates, the filter algorithm has been modified. The primary modifications are due to Ljung, who stated global convergence properties for the modified Extended Kalman Filter, when used as a parameter estimator for linear systems.

Implementation of this filter is …
