NanoMIL has studied and developed SnO2-based memristors, while the W.M Keck Center has been a research leader in printed silver inks. The focus of this thesis is to take the previous generation of memristors on glass and develop a process for creating memristors on flexible Kapton film for the first time. Moreover, collaborative work between the two UTEP laboratories produced memristors with printed silver top electrode contacts, also for the first time. These approaches may enable inexpensive flexible memory.

Acoustic reflectometry, a non invasive technique, consists of solving, the inverse problem of estimating the cross sectional area as function of the distance of a cylindrical cavity by impacting an audible acoustic pulse of high amplitude and short duration, and analyzing the reflected wave. The technique has been applied in Biomedical Engineering to estimate both the area of a human upper airway and the patency of endotracheal tubes as a function of distance. Cadmium sulfide Chemical-Bath-Deposition parameters are modified to allow, for the first time, real time monitoring of cadmium ion molarity using a commercially available cadmium ion Ion-Selective-Electreode at 60°C. This modification involves alterations to typical deposition parameters that eliminate the formation of cadmium hydroxide and keep cadmium ion molarity above 10-7M. The new or atypical parameters developed are pH values below 8.9 and lower moralities for all chemicals. In order to have complexation of cadmium ion driven mainly by ammonia, parameters that minimized complexation by other chemicals are found. Cadmium acetate concentration below 2mM and ammonium acetate concentration below 10mM minimize …

The main constraints in a WSN node are limited processing power, memory allocation, and battery life. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) conducts pioneering research and development in Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and solar cell research. This dissertation project combines these two areas to create ultra-thin small-form-factor crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells. These miniature solar cells create a new class of photovoltaics with potentially novel applications and benefits such as dramatic reductions in cost, weight and material usage.
At the beginning of the project, unusually low efficiencies were obtained in the research group. The intention of this research was thus to investigate the main causes of the low efficiencies through simulation, design, fabrication, and characterization.

This dissertation introduces the theory of compressive sensing with prior information about a signal's sparse representation. We show, mathematically and in numerical simulations, that prior information improves signal reconstruction, in terms of number of required measurements, computation time and signal-to-noise ratios. Following, we present a set of methods for enhanced magnetic resonance imaging and tomography that can be combined with prior information, for enhanced image quality.

The technique relies on the output of an n-dimensional (n>2) non-linear system that exhibits chaotic behavior.

The selective CdTe Nanohetero-Epitaxy growth on Si(100) substrates has been achieved without the use of a mask in an attempt to reduce the dislocation density at the CdTe/Si interface to 105/cm3 using the Close-Space Sublimation (CSS) technique, which is a low-cost effective technique for the deposition of polycrystalline CdTe films. Retrieving the information accurately from sensors placed randomly is a challenging problem of sensor communication and signal interpolation. In this research, we propose spatio-spectral processing techniques for the detection of dust storms in 5-band NOAA-AVHRR imagery. The research is mainly focused on locating the dust sources and automatically finding the transport direction of the dust storm. Previous methods that use simple band math analysis have produced promising results but have some drawback in producing consistent results when low SNR images are used. A novel and state-of-the-art approach for the analysis of cardiac arrhythmias is proposed. Currently, the analysis of the electrocardiogram is only performed in the time-domain. The proposed method improves the electrocardiogram analysis by adding spatial properties. The spatial properties added to the electrocardiogram allow for the analysis of specific regions inside the human heart where cardiac arrhythmias are suspected to have occurred. This Thesis compares a Compute Node, a cluster compute node that can completely contain smaller processes within, but not larger ones, with a Memory Node, a cluster compute node that can fully contain large processes within main memory. The Compute Node and Memory Node are tested by executing matrix multiplication programs that range in size from small processes similar to jobs that can be run on a single workstation to large processes that would only fit entirely within a Memory Node. Super-Resolution (SR) involves the registration of multiple images/frames and reconstruction of a single higher resolution image. The goal of this research is to use multiple, very-low resolution images, such as those produced from a video sequence in a wireless sensor network system, as input to the super-resolution process in a face recognition system. The algorithm used for face recognition is the Fisherfaces method with a nearest neighbor classifier used for the recognition decision.
