This research thesis describes a new InxGa1-xAs/InAysP1-y/InP technology for long wavelength photodetectors and photodetector arrays. A unique and novel detector structure was designed and fabricated using Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy, for low leakage current photodetector arrays in the 1-2.6 µm wavelength region. Potential applications of InGaAs focal plane arrays include near-infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence, remote sensing, environmental sensing, space and astronomical applications. A thermal microprobe has been designed and built for high resolution temperature sensing. The thermal microprobe consists of a very-thin-film thermocouple junction confined to the very end of a low mass Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) probe tip. Essential to high resolution temperature sensing is the confinement of the thermocouple junction to a short distance at the AFM tip. This confinement is achieved by controlled photoresist coating.

The performance of digital mobile radio communication systems is primarily limited by cochannel interference and multipath fading. Antenna arrays, with optimum combining (OC), have been shown to combat multipath fading of the desired signal and are capable of reducing the power of interfering signals at the receiver through spatial filtering. With OC, the signals received by several antenna elements are weighted and combined to maximize the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SLNR). A Multi-Wavelength Imaging Pyrometer (M-WIP) for real-time remote sensing of temperature profiles of targets with unknown emissivity was developed and demonstrated. To measure the spectral radiance of a target at several distinct wavelengths an M-WIP system was implemented based on an 320x122-element PtSi IR-CCD imager with an assembly of 7 narrow-band 1k filters in the range from 1790nm to 4536nm. A real-time algorithm for simultaneous estimation of the temperature and model parameters of the target emissivity from the least-squares fit of the theoretical model of 1k camera output signal to the experimental spectral measurements was developed and implemented. There exists hypothesis that gait selection is strongly correlated with mechanical energy efficiency in normal subjects. The hypothesis is experimentally proven, and intuitively taken for granted. However, it is not mathematically proven that the minimum energy consumption hypothesis is the underlying principle for the normal human gait. To prove the hypothesis we have developed a mathematical model of human walking, in which it is possible to predict an optimal gait at any given speed of walking based on the principle of minimum mechanical energy consumption.

The primary objective of this work was to demonstrate the feasibility of an image sensor that is capable of capturing images at 107 frames per second. Such high frame rate operation is based on storage of a certain (N) number of frames into the BCCD memory registers and readout at a slower rate at the end of the frame collection period. To accommodate an optical frame time of 100ns, a high-speed virtual-gate photodetector with six multiple n-type implants was proposed and a novel design strategy was developed. To implement the rule, probabilities of detection PD and false alarm PF for each detector must be known, which is not readily available in practice. A unique low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) process has been developed to synthesize amorphous and crystalline SiC films using environmentally benign chemicals. The interrelationships governing the process variables, compositions and select properties of the resulting films were established. Such films can be used to produce high quality mask membrane for x-ray lithography. These films can also be used in fabricating high power electrical devices, and hetrojunction devices in conjunction with silicon.
Amorphous SiC films were synthesized using a single precursor, ditertiarybutylsilane, at temperatures below 850°C. Compositional analysis performed on these deposits revealed that, in the deposition temperature range of …

Electronic control systems for counterpulsation Cardiac Assist Devices (CADs) are an essential part of cardiac assistance. Synchronization of the counterpulsation CAD controller with the cardiac cycle is critical to the efficacy of the CAD. The robustness of counterpulsation CAD controllers varies with the ability of the CAD controller to properly trigger on aortic pressure (Pa) and electrocardiogram (ECG) signals for sinusoid rhythms, non-sinusoid rhythms and non-ideal signals resulting from surgical intervention. A prototype monolithic 6H-SiC pressure sensor operational up to 350°C, with potential to operate up to 600°C, was batch fabricated and tested. At temperatures higher than 450°C, silicon diaphragms creep under minimal load. To operate beyond 450°C, therefore, the use of 6H-SiC was proposed. However, three key technological issues - fabrication, high temperature metallization, and gage factor characterization - had to be resolved. Since conventional fabrication technology is not applicable to SiC due to its near inert chemistry, photoconductive selectivity techniques to etch the piezoresistors were developed. A process was developed for fabrication of 360x360-element Very High Frame Rate (VHFR) burst-image sensor on the bases of one-dimensional (1-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) device and process simulations using SUPREM III, SUPREM IV, PISCES IIB and ISE-TCAD software, and the process data provided by the David Sarnoff Research Center. This process includes SiO2-Si3N4 gate dielectric, four-levels of polysilicon, three-levels of metal, eight implants, and requires twenty-one mask levels. In an IS-54 TDMA system, the frequency re-use factor has to be set to 7 so that cells with the same spectrum are separated far enough to meet a required carrier-to-interference ratio (CIR). Several DSP (Digital Signal Processing) algorithms are developed for the MIT TurboNet parallel computer. In contrast to other parallel computers that implement exclusively in hardware either the message-passing or the shared-memory communication paradigm, or employ distributed shared-memory architectures characterized by inefficient implementation of the shared-memory paradigm, the hybrid architecture of TurboNet supports direct, efficient implementation of both paradigms. Three versions of each algorithm are developed, if possible, corresponding to message-passing, shared-memory, and hybrid communications, respectively. The aim of this dissertation is to study the common features of block transforms, subband filter banks, and wavelets, and demonstrate how discrete uncertainty can be applied to evaluate these different decomposition techniques. In particular, we derive an uncertainty bound for discrete-time functions. It is shown that this bound is the same as that for continuous-time functions, if the discrete-time functions have a certain degree of regularity.
This dissertation also deals with spectral modeling in filter banks. It is shown, both theoretically and experimentally, that subspectral modeling is superior to full spectrum modeling if performed before the rate change. The …

Microfabricated threshold accelerometers were successfully designed and fabricated following a careful analysis of the electrical, mechanical, and fabrication issues inherent to micron-sized accelerometers. A uniform cantilever beam was chosen because of the simplicity of design and fabrication. New models for the electrostatic force exerted on the cantilever beam were developed and calculations were made that accurately predicted the electrical characteristics of the accelerometer. The calculations also provided design guidelines for optimizing the accelerometer dimensions. Computer simulation demonstrated that the error of the electrostatic force, calculated using the most accurate model, was within 2% of the actual force which was obtained …

The relaxation semiconductor is defined as one in which the dielectric relaxation time (τd;resistivity times permittivity) is greater than lifetime (τo). Non-hydrogenated amorphous Silicon Carbide (SiC) and KrF excimer laser induced disordered Si were used for the relaxation semiconductors. Both semiconductors have high resistivity, wide energy gap, and numerous defects. A novel diode, consisting of those semiconductors on p-type crystalline Silicon (c-Si), was fabricated. In the diode structure, an injecting contact was made on the relaxation material and a Schottky barrier contact was made on the c-Si.

Several variations of adaptive CDMA synchronous receiver schemes which can automatically adjust to the system parameters, are studied in this dissertation. Unlike their non-adaptive counterparts, these adaptive detectors require no knowledge of the received signals' energies and have similar or better performance.
Minimum energy and decorrelating criterion are used to update the weights. Since weights are updated according to the changes of the detector's outputs, hence no training sequence is required. The convergences of some of the aforementioned adaptive detectors are also disscussed.
