Experimental studies on a vertical metal‐diamond‐silicon switch structure have been conducted for potential pulsed power applications. Both the dc current‐voltage characteristics and the transient switching response have been measured for a range of voltages. With a 1 μm diamond film, the switch has been seen to withstand electric fields up to 1.8 MV/cm. Our results show a polarity dependence which can be associated with current injection at the asymmetric contacts. Polarity effects were also observed in the presence of e‐beam excitation, and arise due to nonuniform carrier generation near the diamond‐silicon interface. The combination of a switched capacitor network and switching power supply techniques can result in a transformer less regulated DC power supply that is small, relatively simple, and efficient. In addition, the output of such a system could be operated over a wide range of common mode voltages. Multiple switched capacitor supplies could be stacked to achieve voltage multiplication.
Although the output of a system of this type is a continuous function, the internal operation must be analyzed in finite time elements. This numerical analysis will be shown in both a mathematical approach and a computer model.

In low pressure discharges, operated in electronegative gas mixtures to the right of the Paschen curve minimum, the discharge resistance can be increased by application of transverse magnetic fields. In this range of operation, both the mean free path and the larmor radius are small compared to the discharge dimensions. The relationship between the electric field and the magnetic field is therefore controlled by electron- molecule collisional processes. Specifically, the magnetically induced increase in the discharge resistance is caused by a downward shift of the electron energy distribution which leads to an increase in attachment and a reduction in ionization. …

This experimental investigation addresses the anomalous overvoltage breakdown and subsequent recovery characteristics observed in gas-blown spark gaps. Previous investigations have reported a two-stage recovery process in self-break, pulse-charged, gas-blown spark gape in which the spark gap recovers first to an intermediate breakdown strength before recovering to the undisturbed breakdown voltage. The recovery process has been explained in terms of two different characteristic times. The first is that required to obtain initial recovery in which the spark gap regains its intrinsic breakdown strength. High-pressure spark gap switches are often used in pulsed power systems because of their high power capabilities. Unfortunately, these switches cannot be operated at high repetition rates because of the time required for the switch to recover. However, the recovery rate of a spark gap may be improved by flowing a gas through the interelectrode region so as to remove the hot gases and debris.

The feasibility of using a dense plasma focus (DPF) as a current interrupting device has been investigated. Specifically, a 34-kJ, Mather-type DPF was modified to accept a third electrode so that a discharge could be created between this electrode and the center electrode of the DPF by a 10-kJ inductive energy storage circuit. It was anticipated that the accelerating mechanisms of the DPF pinch, which are known to cause a rapid reduction in the DPF current, would interrupt the 1-kA to 10-kA secondary discharge current thus forcing the secondary current through an external load and hence result in power amplification. …

This thesis is an introduction to the solution of electromagnetic transients by a combination of the Bergeran method of characteristics and the application of trapezoidal rule of integration.
Three test examples solved by digital computer illustrate the step by step solution and computer programming.
To compare this method with the Laplace transformation technique, a test problem solved by both methods and also digital computer is illustrated. In conclusion, the advantages and disadvantages of both methods are compared.
