Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), or synchrophasors, are rapidly being deployed in the smart grid with the goal of measuring phasor quantities concurrently from wide area distribution substations. By utilizing GPS receivers, PMUs can take a wide area snapshot of power systems. Thus, the possibility of blackouts in the smart grid, the next generation power grid, will be reduced. The conventional biopotential measurement configuration utilises long lead wires which connect measuring electrodes to signal conditioning circuitry. The majority of bioelectric signals that are measured from the human body have a tiny signal amplitude (5µV-5mV range) and thus any interference that is induced on the lead wires can have a detrimental effect on the original signal. In this paper, we present an alternative configuration, in which digitisation occurs on the electrode, potentially providing enhanced signal measurement as well as significant benefits in terms of the simplification of the physical interconnections between electrodes. The clock generator is a critical component in high-speed wireline communication systems. The clocks in these systems mark time at precise regular intervals. Any deviation of the clock edges from these ideal time points is called jitter and it degrades the overall integrity of the communication system. This thesis looks at both phase locked loops (PLLs) and delay locked loops (DLLs) and their ability to provide these precise clocks. In this paper various mathematical models to characterize and forecast telecommunication traffic time series traffic have been applied, and the ranges of validity of the models are determined by comparing them with measured traffic data using the measurement errors criteria method which resulted into the superior model. This thesis documents the design and implementation of a DSCS III single Channel Transponder (SCT) beacon telemetry display. The system is a personal computer based design which interfaces to three SCT beacon receiver/demodulators. The software was designed to decode and display both the DSCS III A and DSCS HI B satellite beacons. Recordings of the SCT beacon display can be made on paper and/or magnetic media when triggered by the user, a watchdog timer, or the SCT command accept telemetry bit. The purpose of this research was to model and simulate the performance of a digital phase shift keyed satellite modem. The probability of bit error (P sub b) at different levels of energy per bit to noise power ratio (E sub b/N sub o) was the performance measure. The channel was assumed to contribute only additive white Gaussian noise. A second order Costas loop performs demodulation in the modem and was the key part of the simulation. An analysis of the 3 dB lumped-element branchline directional coupler constructed using L-C and T networks is given. Matrices of lumped element capacitances and inductances in the form of low and high pass filters are equated to the matrices of the distributed element transmission lines at the centre frequency of operation, as a result of which design equations are derived. Using even and odd modes of excitation, frequency characteristics of the directional couplers are computed and compared to those of the coupler constructed using distributed element transmission lines.

The quality of synthetic speech from Linear Predictive (LP) vocoders is known to be degraded due to the lack of detail in the commonly used pulse/noise excitation model. In this investigation, it was hypothesized that this degradation is due to the lack of precise timing information in the pulses and to the constraint that each short-time segment of excitation be either an impulse train or white noise. Accordingly, more complex excitation models were implemented using precise timing from peaks in the residual and a mixture of pulses and noise.
