Drafting In Self-Timed Circuits, Christopher Cowan

Electrical and Computer Engineering PhD Day

Intervals between data items propagating in self-timed circuits are controlled by handshake signals rather than by a clock. The sequence of handshakes can be abstracted as the movement of “tokens”. In many self-timed designs, a trailing token will catch up with a leading token, even when it trails by thousands of gate delays. Simulations in SPICE of a simple GasP circular FIFO reveal this effect. Contrary to earlier work, we find the cause of drafting to be charge stored on an isolated node between two series transistors. This mechanism occurs in many decision gates that implement a logical AND. The …

Optimal Mixed-Norm Control Synthesis For Discrete-Time Linear Systems, David R. Jacques Jun 1995

Optimal Mixed-Norm Control Synthesis For Discrete-Time Linear Systems, David R. Jacques

Theses and Dissertations

A mixed-norm approach to control synthesis for discrete time linear systems is developed. Specifically, the problem of minimizing the H2 norm of a transfer function, subject to a combination of ℓ1 and-or H norm constraints on dissimilar but related transfer functions is considered. The uniqueness of the optimal solution is shown, and numerical methods for approximating the optimal solution to within arbitrary accuracy are developed. These methods generally result in high order compensators which can not be implemented in most practical applications. In response to this, a numerical method is developed which solves for suboptimal solutions of …

Explicit Asymmetric Bounds For Robust Stability Of Continuous And Discrete-Time-Systems, Zhiqiang Gao, P J. Antsaklis Feb 1993

Explicit Asymmetric Bounds For Robust Stability Of Continuous And Discrete-Time-Systems, Zhiqiang Gao, P J. Antsaklis

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The problem of robust stability in linear systems with parametric uncertainties is considered. Explicit stability bounds on uncertain parameters are derived and expressed in terms of linear inequalities for continuous systems and inequalities with quadratic terms for discrete-time systems. Cases where system parameters are nonlinear functions of an uncertainty are also examined
