One of the fundamental protections used in electrical network power system is Overcurrent and Earth Fault (OCEF) protection. They have to be both sensitive and quick in minimizing the electrodynamic and thermal stress imposed on the equipment during the fault time interval. It is utmost important for the relays to be capable of removing only the faulty section while keep up the flexibly to solid areas in the system. In order to achieve this objective, correct relay coordination setting is important to prevent the system from suffering catastrophic effects. These days, the consumer is enforcing raising performance demands by reducing …
Enhancing Practical Tractability Of Lyapunov-Based Economic Model Predictive Control, Helen Durand, Dominic Messina
Enhancing Practical Tractability Of Lyapunov-Based Economic Model Predictive Control, Helen Durand, Dominic Messina
Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications
Lyapunov-based economic model predictive control (LEMPC) is an optimization-based control design that computes economically-optimal control actions for a process while maintaining the closed-loop state within a bounded region of state-space; however, it may be difficult to design in practice without closed-loop simulations, as it requires an auxiliary stabilizing controller, Lyapunov function, and a number of sets to be developed to ensure closed-loop stability. Practical application of this method could benefit from methods which make it more likely that, without simulations to identify aspects of the control design that would provide stability, controller parameters can be selected that would maintain stability. …

Mitigating Cyberattack Impacts Using Lyapunov-Based Economic Model Predictive Control, Helen Durand, Matthew Wegener
Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications
One of the pressing concerns for next-generation manufacturing is the development of techniques for guaranteeing that a control system is cyberattack-resilient in the sense that even if a cyberattack is successful at breaking information technology-based defenses (e.g., it succeeds at providing a false sensor measurement to the controller), closed-loop stability is still maintained. Our prior work has provided a nonlinear systems definition for cyberattacks. This work explores how a nonlinear systems perspective on cyberattack-resilience for false sensor measurements provided to controllers may allow an economic model predictive control (EMPC) formulation known as Lyapunov-based EMPC (LEMPC) to be designed such that …
Lyapunov-Based Economic Model Predictive Control With Taylor Series State Approximations, Keshav Kasturi Rangan, Helen Durand
Lyapunov-Based Economic Model Predictive Control With Taylor Series State Approximations, Keshav Kasturi Rangan, Helen Durand
Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications
A method for integrating optimization and control during on-line process operation is known as economic model predictive control (EMPC). EMPC optimizes a general cost function which reflects process economics subject to a model of the process. One formulation of EMPC which can maintain closed-loop stability in the presence of sufficiently small disturbances is Lyapunov-based EMPC (LEMPC). In this work, we make precise connections between closed-loop stability considerations under LEMPC and numerical approximations (via Taylor series) of the solution of the nonlinear dynamic model of the process used in the controller. A chemical process example is utilized to demonstrate the concepts …

Autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operating as a swarm can be deployed in austere environments, where cyber electromagnetic activities often require speedy and dynamic adjustments to swarm operations. Use of central controllers, UAV synchronization mechanisms or pre-planned set of actions to control a swarm in such deployments would hinder its ability to deliver expected services. We introduce artificial intelligence and game theory based flight control algorithms to be run by each autonomous UAV to determine its actions in near real-time, while relying only on local spatial, temporal and electromagnetic (EM) information. Each UAV using our flight control algorithms positions itself …

Chemical Technology, Control and Management
Discusses the formalization of the procedure for constructing an adaptive control system with a reference model based on the Lyapunov function. It is shown that the asymptotic stability of the extended system of differential equations guarantees accurate tracking of the desired output signal of the model. At the same time, the expediency of analyzing the asymptotic stability of the system in extended space using the Lyapunov function is shown. The above algorithms help to stabilize the computational matrix inversion procedure and thereby increase the accuracy of estimating the adjustable parameter in an adaptive control system.

Stability Analysis Of Systems With Time Delay Simulation Program, Matthew Carroll, Brandon Replogle
Electrical Engineering
A small company wants to develop a CAD tool, ideally as part of the MATLAB suite of tools, for system stability analysis of nonlinear control systems with time-delay. The program must allow the designer to input the system block diagram graphically, then using symbolic expansion, automatically generate the Laplace domain stability boundary and disturbance settling time. The stable regions are then to be graphically plotted as a set of 2- or 3-dimensional parametric stability boundaries. The designer can then input performance constraints on the system through the MATLAB console and a Simulink environment will automatically be generated.
This program is …
