Digital Ripple Correlation Control For Photovoltaic Applications, Jonathan W. Kimball, Philip T. Krein

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ripple correlation control (RCC) is a fast, robust online optimization technique. RCC is particularly suited for switching power converters, where the inherent ripple provides information about the system operating point. The present work examines a digital formulation that has reduced power consumption and greater robustness. A maximum power point tracker for a photovoltaic panel demonstrates greater than 99% tracking accuracy and fast convergence.

A Novel Impedance Measurement Technique For Power Electronic Systems, Peng Xiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Keith Corzine Jun 2007

A Novel Impedance Measurement Technique For Power Electronic Systems, Peng Xiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Keith Corzine

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

When designing and building power systems that contain power electronic switching sources and loads, system integrators must consider the frequency-dependent impedance characteristics at an interface to ensure system stability. Stability criteria have been developed in terms of source and load impedance for both dc and ac systems and it is often necessary to measure system impedance through experiments. Traditional injection-based impedance measurement techniques require multiple online tests which lead to many disadvantages. The impedance identification method proposed in this paper greatly reduces online test time by modeling the system with recurrent neural networks. The recurrent networks are trained with measured …

Impedance Identification Of Integrated Power System Components Using Recurrent Neural Networks., Peng Xiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Keith Corzine

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Impedance characteristics of shipboard power systems provide important information for studies on system stability and integration. Existing injection based impedance measurement techniques require multiple tests on the system to obtain characteristics over wide frequency ranges. In this paper, recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are used to model the small signal dynamics of power electronic systems based on a single test in which randomized signals are injected into the system. The trained RNN is then used to extract the small-signal impedances/admittances of the system. A number of tests have been carried out in simulation to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Combined Training Of Recurrent Neural Networks With Particle Swarm Optimization And Backpropagation Algorithms For Impedance Identification, Peng Xiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Keith Corzine

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A recurrent neural network (RNN) trained with a combination of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and backpropagation (BP) algorithms is proposed in this paper. The network is used as a dynamic system modeling tool to identify the frequency-dependent impedances of power electronic systems such as rectifiers, inverters, and DC-DC converters. As a category of supervised learning methods, the various backpropagation training algorithms developed for recurrent neural networks use gradient descent information to guide their search for optimal weights solutions that minimize the output errors. While they prove to be very robust and effective in training many types of network structures, they …

Comparison Of Single Stage And Two Stage Stage Grid-Tie Inverters, Keith Mansfield Jan 2007

Comparison Of Single Stage And Two Stage Stage Grid-Tie Inverters, Keith Mansfield

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis compares two methods of designing grid-tie inverters. The first design topology is a traditional two stage approach consisting of an isolated DC-DC converter on the input followed by a high switching frequency SPWM (Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation) stage to produce the required low frequency sine wave output. The novel second design approach employs a similar DC-DC input stage capable of being modulated to provide a rectified sine wave output voltage/current waveform. This stage is followed by a simple low frequency switched Unfolding Stage to recreate the required sine wave output. Both of the above designs have advantages and …

Maximum Energy Harvesting Control Foroscillating Energy Harvesting Systems, John Elmes Jan 2007

Maximum Energy Harvesting Control Foroscillating Energy Harvesting Systems, John Elmes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents an optimal method of designing and controlling an oscillating energy harvesting system. Many new and emerging energy harvesting systems, such as the energy harvesting backpack and ocean wave energy harvesting, capture energy normally expelled through mechanical interactions. Often the nature of the system indicates slow system time constants and unsteady AC voltages. This paper reveals a method for achieving maximum energy harvesting from such sources with fast determination of the optimal operating condition. An energy harvesting backpack, which captures energy from the interaction between the user and the spring decoupled load, is presented in this paper. The …

Skin And Proximity Effects In Two Parallel Plates, Hamdi Eltayib Abdelbagi Jan 2007

Skin And Proximity Effects In Two Parallel Plates, Hamdi Eltayib Abdelbagi

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Time varying currents within winding and core conductors induce magnetic fields. When more than one conductor is present the resultant magnetic field can be found by adding the individual magnetic fields by superposition. The resultant magnetic field in turn induces eddy currents within each electrical component within the vicinity of the resultant magnetic field. Eddy currents flow in the opposite direction of the primary current and increase the resistance by reducing the area in which the primary current has to travel. Eddy currents also reduce the effectiveness of the conductors to conductor high frequency currents. Skin and proximity effects were …

Ac Impedance Measurement By Line-To-Line Injected Current, Keith Corzine, Jing Huang Oct 2006

Ac Impedance Measurement By Line-To-Line Injected Current, Keith Corzine, Jing Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Naval ship as well as aerospace power systems are incorporating a greater degree of power electronic switching sources and loads. Although these components provide exceptional performance, they are prone to instability due to their high efficiency and constant power characteristics which lead to a negative impedance nature. When designing these systems, system integrators must consider the impedance versus frequency at an interface (which designates source and load). Stability criteria have been developed in terms of source and load impedance for both DC and AC systems and it is often helpful to have techniques for impedance measurement. For DC systems, the …

Dynamic Maximum Power Point Tracking Of Photovoltaic Arrays Using Ripple Correlation Control, Trishan Esram, Jonathan W. Kimball, Philip T. Krein, Patrick L. Chapman, Pallab Midya

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A dynamically rapid method used for tracking the maximum power point of photovoltaic arrays, known as ripple correlation control, is presented and verified against experiment. The technique takes advantage of the signal ripple, which is automatically present in power converters. The ripple is interpreted as a perturbation from which a gradient ascent optimization can be realized. The technique converges asymptotically at maximum speed to the maximum power point without the benefit of any array parameters or measurements. The technique has simple circuit implementations.

An Efficient Discontinuous-Mode Model Of A Switch Pole, Jonathan W. Kimball

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Simulating switching power supplies presents many challenges. A variety of switch pole models is available, from the physics-based to the behavioral. The present work develops and demonstrates a behavioral model that works well in discontinuous mode. The new model eliminates the extremely fast time constants normally associated with switches in a high impedance state. Simulation time is improved and fixed-time-step algorithms are now stable with reasonable step size.

An Estimative Current Mode Controller For Dc-Dc Converters Operating In Continuous Conduction Mode, Mehdi Ferdowsi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new digital average-current-mode controller for converters operating in continuous conduction mode is introduced. The principal idea of the proposed control scheme is to estimate the required value of the duty ratio based on the dynamic of the converter using the measured samples of current and voltage signals. The proposed control scheme is stable for any value of the duty ratio without employing an external ramp. Furthermore, it is robust, accurate, and has a fast dynamic response.

Circuit Models For Power Bus Structures On Printed Circuit Boards Using A Hybrid Fem-Spice Method, Todd H. Hubing, Chunlei Guo

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Power bus structures consisting of two parallel conducting planes are widely used on high-speed printed circuit boards. In this paper, a full-wave finite-element method (FEM) method is used to analyze power bus structures, and the resulting matrix equations are converted to equivalent circuits that can be analyzed using SPICE programs. Using this method of combining FEM and SPICE, power bus structures of arbitrary shape can be modeled efficiently both in the time-domain and frequency-domain, along with the circuit components connected to the bus. Dielectric loss and losses due to the finite resistance of the power planes can also be modeled. …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The progression of distributed generation within a bulk power system will lead to the need for greater control of transmission-line power flows. Static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs) provide a power-electronics-based means of embedded control of transmission-line voltage and power flows. The integration of energy storage with a STATCOM can extend traditional STATCOM capabilities to four-quadrant power flow control and transient stability improvement. This paper discusses energy storage systems (ESSs) integrated with conventional and multilevel bidirectional power converters for a hybrid STATCOM/ESS. Conventional, diode-clamped, and cascaded multilevel converter-based STATCOM/ESSs are developed, and their performances for a variety of power system applications are …

Review Of Multiple Input Dc-Dc Converters For Electric And Hybrid Vehicles, Krishna P. Yalamanchili, Mehdi Ferdowsi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Batteries, ultra capacitors, fuel cells, and solar arrays are widely used in electric and hybrid vehicles (EVs/HVs) as an electric power source or an energy storage unit. In the structure of the electric power system of modern EVs/HVs, more than one of these units may be employed to improve the performance and efficiency; hence utilization of a multi-input DC-DC converter is inevitable to obtain a regulated bus DC voltage. In this paper, a review of multiple input DC-DC power electronic converters (MI-PEC) devoted to combine the power flow from several on-board energy sources of an EV/HV is presented. Several multi-input …

The engineering of the power delivery network is becoming a fundamental issue in the design of high speed digital systems on PCB's. In fact, providing the required power to the different IC's at the specified noisefree voltage levels allows a correct functioning of the overall PCB systems. More over, the ongoing trend of replacing active devices with peripherally located I/O and PWR/GND pins with areally located I/O and PWR/GND pins (BGA packaged) increases the complexity of the models, when power delivery issues need to be studied in a larger contest, such as the overall PCB's. The employment of the powerful, …

Modern Laboratory-Based Education For Power Electronics And Electric Machines, Robert S. Balog, Zakdy Sorchini, Jonathan W. Kimball, Patrick L. Chapman, Philip T. Krein

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The study of modern energy conversion draws upon a broad range of knowledge and often requires a fair amount of experience. This suggests that laboratory instruction should be an integral component of a power electronics and electric machines curriculum. However, before a single watt can be processed in a realistic way, the student must understand not only the operation of conversion systems but also more advanced concepts such as control theory, speed and position sensing, switching signal generation, gate drive isolation, circuit layout, and other critical issues. Our approach is to use a blue-box module where these details are pre-built …

Double-Tiered Capacitive Shuttling Method For Balancing Series-Connected Batteries, Andrew Baughman, Mehdi Ferdowsi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The auto industry is progressing towards hybrid and fully electric vehicles in their future car models. These vehicles need a power plant that is reliable during the lifetime of the car. Battery capacity imbalances stemming from the cell manufacturer, ensuing driving environment, and operational usage affect voltage levels, which must follow adherence to strict limits to ensure the safety of the driver. A variation on an existing method of using a capacitor to shuttle charge from one battery to another to balance series strings of batteries is proposed in this paper. The advancement shown in this paper is to bridge …

A Method Of Including Switching Loss In Electro-Thermal Simulations, Jonathan W. Kimball

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Often, power electronics systems are simulated with ideal switching elements, perhaps augmented with conduction loss models. A behavioral model is proposed that also includes switching loss and is independent of switching frequency. Therefore, it is suitable for variable frequency control methods, including hysteresis, delta modulation, and random PWM. Models have been realized in Dymola using voltage-controlled voltage sources, current sources, logic, and additional ideal switches. Thermal ports are included to facilitate electro-thermal simulation. A method for parameter extraction is demonstrated using experimental data from standard PWM.

An Improved Statcom Model For Power Flow Analysis, Zhiping Yang, Chen Shen, Lingli Zhang, Mariesa Crow Jul 2000

An Improved Statcom Model For Power Flow Analysis, Zhiping Yang, Chen Shen, Lingli Zhang, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The StatCom is traditionally modeled for power flow analysis as a PV or PQ bus depending on its primary application. The active power is either set to zero (neglecting the StatCom losses) or calculated iteratively. The StatCom voltage and reactive power compensation are usually related through the magnetics of the StatCom. This traditional power flow model of the StatCom neglects the impact of the high-frequency effects and the switching characteristics of the power electronics on the active power losses and the reactive power injection (absorption). In this paper, the authors propose a new StatCom model appropriate for power flow analysis …

Power islands are often used to isolate devices that put noise on a power bus from devices that may be susceptible to power bus noise. At high frequencies however, the effectiveness of these islands depends on the implementation. This paper experimentally investigates the effectiveness of different power island structures at frequencies up to 3 GHz.
