Automatic vegetation identification plays an important role in many applications including remote sensing and high performance flight simulations. This paper presents a method to automatically identify vegetation based upon satellite imagery. First, we utilize the ISODATA algorithm to cluster pixels in the images where the number of clusters is determined by the algorithm. We then apply morphological operations to the clustered images to smooth the boundaries between clusters and to fill holes inside clusters. After that, we compute six features for each cluster. This research presents an algorithm that improves the ability to view objects using an electro-optical imaging system with at least one polarization sensitive channel in addition to the primary channel. An innovative algorithm for detection and estimation of the defocus aberration present in an image is also developed. Using a known defocus aberration, an iterative polarimeter deconvolution algorithm is developed using a generalized expectation-maximization (GEM) model. The polarimeter deconvolution algorithm is extended to an iterative polarimeter multiframe blind deconvolution (PMFBD) algorithm with an unknown aberration. Using both simulated and laboratory images, the results of the new PMFBD algorithm clearly outperforms …

Nesting algorithms deal with placing two dimensional shapes on the given canvas. In this paper a binary way of solving the nesting problem is proposed. Geometric shapes are quantized into binary form, which is used to operate on them. After finishing nesting they are converted back into original geometrical form. Investigations showed, that there is a big influence of quantization accuracy for the nesting effect. However, greater accuracy results with longer time of computation. The proposed knowledge base system is able to strongly reduce the computational time.

With the recent development of nanoscale materials and assembly techniques, it is envisioned to build high-density reconfigurable systems which have never been achieved by the photolithography. Various reconfigurable architectures have been proposed based on nanowire crossbar structure as the primitive building block. Unfortunately, high-density systems consisting of nanometer-scale elements are likely to have many imperfections and variations; thus, defect-tolerance is considered as one of the most exigent challenges. A novel approach of equivalent circuit model extraction is developed for modeling of integrated package and PCB power distribution networks (PDN). The integrated PDNs are formulated from a full-wave finite-difference algorithm, and the resulting matrix equations are converted to equivalent circuits. The equivalent circuits, as well as the decoupling capacitors and the attached circuit components, can be analyzed with a SPICE-like solver in both the time and frequency domains. An apparatus and method is disclosed for using adaptive algorithms to exploit sparsity in target weight vectors in an adaptive channel equalizer. An adaptive algorithm comprises a selected value of a prior and a selected value of a cost function. The present invention comprises algorithms adapted for calculating adaptive equalizer coefficients for sparse transmission channels. The present invention provides sparse algorithms in the form of a Sparse Least Mean Squares (LMS) algorithm and a Sparse Constant Modulus Algorithm (CMA) and a Sparse Decision Directed (DD) algorithm.

Kalman filters are often used to estimate the state variables of a dynamic system. However, in the application of Kalman filters some known signal information is often either ignored or dealt with heuristically. For instance, state-variable constraints (which may be based on physical considerations) are often neglected because they do not fit easily into the structure of the Kalman filter. Thus, two analytical methods to incorporate state-variable inequality constraints into the Kalman filter are now derived. The purpose of this research was to develop a fundamental framework for a new approach to multiframe translational shift estimation in image processing. This thesis sought to create a new multiframe shift estimator, to theoretically prove and experimentally test key properties of it, and to quantify its performance according to several metrics. The new estimator was modeled successfully and was proven to be an unbiased estimator under certain common image noise conditions. Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) type devices, when used as plasma actuators, have shown significant promise for use in many aeronautical applications. Experimentally, DBD actuator devices have been shown to induce motion in initially still air, and to cause re-attachment of air flow over a wing surface at a high angle of attack. This thesis explores the numerical simulation of the DBD device in both a lD and 2D environment. We present a hybrid committee classifier for computer-aided detection (CAD) of colonic polyps in CT colonography (CTC). The classifier involved an ensemble of support vector machines (SVM) and neural networks (NN) for classification, a progressive search algorithm for selecting a set of features used by the SVMs and a floating search algorithm for selecting features used by the NNs. A total of 102 quantitative features were calculated for each polyp candidate found by a prototype CAD system. 3 features were selected for each of 7 SVM classifiers which were then combined to form a committee of SVMs classifier. The idea of separating the spatial and temporal subgridding interfaces is introduced in this paper. Based on this idea, the spatial and temporal subgridding algorithms can be developed and analyzed separately. The spatial algorithm was given in the previous paper. In this paper, the temporal subgridding algorithm is described and the stability is illustrated by the analytical formulation of a one-dimensional model. An FDTD code that combines the spatial and temporal subgridding algorithms is implemented. Numerical test models are calculated to show the stability and accuracy of the proposed method.

This paper considers the case of a wide-band Lorentzian (WBL) algorithm in the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling of dispersive media. It is shown herein that the WBL model is a physically meaningful and practically useful case of the frequency behavior of materials along with the Debye and narrow-band Lorentzian (NBL). The recursive convolution algorithms for the finite-difference time-domain technique for NBL and WBL models differ. The Debye model, which is suitable for comparatively low-frequency dispersive materials, may not have sufficient number of parameters for describing the wide-band material, especially if this material exhibits pronounced absorption at higher frequencies. The task of tracking a target in the presence of measurement clutter is a two-fold problem: one of handling measurement association uncertainty (due to clutter), and poorly known or significantly varying target dynamics. Measurement association uncertainty does not allow conventional tracking algorithms (such as Kalman filters) to be implemented directly. Poorly known or varying target dynamics complicate the design of any tracking filter, and filters using only a single dynamics model can rarely handle anything beyond the most benign target maneuvers. A three-dimensional subgridding algorithm for the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is proposed in this paper. The method is based on interpolation of electric and magnetic current densities. The coarse-fine mesh ratio can be either 1:2 or 1:3. Results of a test model utilizing a lossless cavity excited with a dipole show no tendency of instability after 500000 time steps. The reflection in time domain at the subgridding interface was calculated to test the accuracy of the subgridding algorithm.

Time-domain simulation algorithms are widely used in the anaylsis and design of electromagnetic systems. Many of them are characterized by high Q's. Thus, the simulations have to employ many time steps in order to achieve a complete characterization of these systems. This time-consuming computational effort can be avoided if the late instants of time are extrapolated by applying a parametric estimation algorithm. Finding meaningful phrases in a document has been studied in various information retrieval systems in order to improve the performance. Many previous statistical phrase finding methods had different aim such as document classification. Some are hybridized with statistical and syntactic grammatical methods; others use correlation heuristics between words. We propose a new phrase-finding algorithm that adds correlated words one by one to the phrases found in the previous stage, maintaining high correlation within a phrase. There is recently an interest in test generation for reversible circuits, but nothing has been published about fault localization in such circuits. This paper deals with fault localization for binary reversible (permutative) circuits. We concentrate on functional test based fault localization, to detect and locate “stuck-at” faults in a reversible circuit by creating an adaptive tree. A striking property of reversible circuits is that they exhibit “symmetric” adaptive trees. We present an approach for fault detection in layered interconnection networks (LINs). An LIN is a generalized multistage interconnection network commonly used in reconfigurable systems; the nets (links) are arranged in sets (referred to as layers) of different size. Switching elements (made of simple switches such as transmission-gate-like devices) are arranged in a cascade to connect pairs of layers. The switching elements of an LIN have the same number of switches, but the switching patterns may not be uniform. A scale model of a tractor-trailer truck was developed as a testbed for control algorithms. The truck operates in autonomous or semi-autonomous modes. An on-board Pentium computer with a PC104 bus performs the computations and data collection. Various sensors and a wireless transceiver are on-board the truck. Our research focus has been in the autonomous control of vehicles using intelligent systems. The nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation in a self-defocusing Kerr medium supports dark solitons. Moreover the mean field description of a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which for a highly anisotropic (cigar-shaped) magnetic trap reduces to a one-dimensional (1D) cubic NLS in an external potential. A quantum lattice algorithm is developed for the dark solitons. Simulations are presented for both black (stationary) solitons as well as (moving) dark solitons. A finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method capable of attaching rectangular computational domains is proposed herein. The aim of this approach is to reduce the size of computational domain according to the geometry of the modeled structure so as to reduce the simulation time with keeping precision of the result in an acceptable range. A multigrid algorithm is applied on the attaching interface between two rectangular domains so that different resolution can be achieved in different domains.

The finite-difference time-domain method is applied to the analysis of transmission lines on printed circuit boards. The lossy, dispersive behavior of the dielectric substrate is accurately accounted for by means of several algorithms whose accuracy is discussed and compared. Numerical results are validated by comparisons with measurements and an equivalent circuit of slot in the ground plane is proposed.

The most recent research involved registering images in the presence of translations and rotations using one iteration of the redundant discrete wavelet transform. We extend this work by creating a new multiscale transform to register two images with translation or rotation differences, independent of scale differences between the images. Our two-dimensional multiscale transform uses an innovative combination of lowpass filtering and the continuous wavelet transform to mimic the two-dimensional redundant discrete wavelet transform. First, we consider makespan minimization for vehicle scheduling problems on trees with release and handling times. 2-approximation algorithms were known for several variants of the single vehicle problem on a path. A 3/2-approximation algorithm was known for the single vehicle problem on a path where there is a fixed starting point and the vehicle must return to the starting point upon completion. A composite media containing particles with a high internal field of magnetic anisotropy (hexagonal ferrites) useful for numerous EMC applications in a wide frequency band is considered. Effective constitutive parameters of a high-loss composite gyromagnetic media are represented in the Lorentzian form. It is convenient for the numerical analysis using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm with a recursive convolution procedure. In numerous practical applications, it is necessary to find the smallest possible tree with a bounded diameter. A diameter-constrained minimum spanning tree (DCMST) of a given undirected, edge-weighted graph, G, is the smallest-weight spanning tree of all spanning trees of G which contain no path with more than k edges, where k is a given positive integer. The problem of finding a DCMST is NP-complete for all values of k; 4 ≤ k ≤ (n - 2), except when all edge-weights are identical.
