Academic Packing For Commercial Fpga Architectures, Travis D. Haroldsen Jul 2017

Academic Packing For Commercial Fpga Architectures, Travis D. Haroldsen

Theses and Dissertations

With a few exceptions, academic packing algorithms for FPGAs are typically applied solely to theoretical architectures. This has allowed the algorithms to focus on the basic components of packing while abstracting away many of the details dictated by real hardware. As commercially available FPGAs have advanced, however, the academic algorithms and architectures have diverged significantly from their commercial counterparts. In this dissertation, the RapidSmith 2 framework is presented. This framework accurately reflects the architecture of Xilinx FPGAs and provides support for integrating custom tools into the commercial CAD tools. Using this framework, the RSVPack packing algorithm is implemented. The RSVPack …

Generalized Differential Calculus And Applications To Optimization, R. Blake Rector Jun 2017

Generalized Differential Calculus And Applications To Optimization, R. Blake Rector

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis contains contributions in three areas: the theory of generalized calculus, numerical algorithms for operations research, and applications of optimization to problems in modern electric power systems. A geometric approach is used to advance the theory and tools used for studying generalized notions of derivatives for nonsmooth functions. These advances specifically pertain to methods for calculating subdifferentials and to expanding our understanding of a certain notion of derivative of set-valued maps, called the coderivative, in infinite dimensions. A strong understanding of the subdifferential is essential for numerical optimization algorithms, which are developed and applied to nonsmooth problems in operations …

Algorithm For Premature Ventricular Contraction Detection From A Subcutaneous Electrocardiogram Signal, Iris Lynn Shelly Dec 2016

Algorithm For Premature Ventricular Contraction Detection From A Subcutaneous Electrocardiogram Signal, Iris Lynn Shelly

Dissertations and Theses

Cardiac arrhythmias occur when the normal pattern of electrical signals in the heart breaks down. A premature ventricular contraction (PVC) is a common type of arrhythmia that occurs when a heartbeat originates from an ectopic focus within the ventricles rather than from the sinus node in the right atrium. This and other arrhythmias are often diagnosed with the help of an electrocardiogram, or ECG, which records the electrical activity of the heart using electrodes placed on the skin. In an ECG signal, a PVC is characterized by both timing and morphological differences from a normal sinus beat.

An implantable cardiac …

Task And Participant Scheduling Of Trading Platforms In Vehicular Participatory Sensing Networks, Heyuan Shi, Xiaoyu Song, Ming Gu, Jiaguang Sun Dec 2016

Task And Participant Scheduling Of Trading Platforms In Vehicular Participatory Sensing Networks, Heyuan Shi, Xiaoyu Song, Ming Gu, Jiaguang Sun

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The vehicular participatory sensing network (VPSN) is now becoming more and more prevalent, and additionally has shown its great potential in various applications. A general VPSN consists of many tasks from task, publishers, trading platforms and a crowd of participants. Some literature treats publishers and the trading platform as a whole, which is impractical since they are two independent economic entities with respective purposes. For a trading platform in markets, its purpose is to maximize the profit by selecting tasks and recruiting participants who satisfy the requirements of accepted tasks, rather than to improve the quality of each task. This …

Multi-Sensor Integration To Map Odor Distribution For The Detection Of Chemical Sources, Xiang Gao, Levent Acar Jul 2016

Multi-Sensor Integration To Map Odor Distribution For The Detection Of Chemical Sources, Xiang Gao, Levent Acar

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper addresses the problem of mapping odor distribution derived from a chemical source using multi-sensor integration and reasoning system design. Odor localization is the problem of finding the source of an odor or other volatile chemical. Most localization methods require a mobile vehicle to follow an odor plume along its entire path, which is time consuming and may be especially difficult in a cluttered environment. To solve both of the above challenges, this paper proposes a novel algorithm that combines data from odor and anemometer sensors, and combine sensors' data at different positions. Initially, a multi-sensor integration method, together …

An Efficient Method For Optimizing Segmentation Parameters, Jacob D' Avy, Wei-Wen Hsu, Chung-Hao Chen, Andreas F. Koschan, Mongi Abidi Jan 2016

An Efficient Method For Optimizing Segmentation Parameters, Jacob D' Avy, Wei-Wen Hsu, Chung-Hao Chen, Andreas F. Koschan, Mongi Abidi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Segmenting an image into meaningful regions is an important step in many computer vision applications such as facial recognition, target tracking and medical image analysis. Because image segmentation is an ill-posed problem, parameters are needed to constrain the solution to one that is suitable for a given application. For a user, setting parameter values is often unintuitive. We present a method for automating segmentation parameter selection using an efficient search method to optimize a segmentation objective function. Efficiency is improved by utilizing prior knowledge about the relationship between a segmentation parameter and the objective function terms. An adaptive sampling of …

Fizzy: Feature Subset Selection For Metagenomics., Gregory Ditzler, J Calvin Morrison, Yemin Lan, Gail L Rosen Nov 2015

Fizzy: Feature Subset Selection For Metagenomics., Gregory Ditzler, J Calvin Morrison, Yemin Lan, Gail L Rosen

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

BACKGROUND: Some of the current software tools for comparative metagenomics provide ecologists with the ability to investigate and explore bacterial communities using α- & β-diversity. Feature subset selection--a sub-field of machine learning--can also provide a unique insight into the differences between metagenomic or 16S phenotypes. In particular, feature subset selection methods can obtain the operational taxonomic units (OTUs), or functional features, that have a high-level of influence on the condition being studied. For example, in a previous study we have used information-theoretic feature selection to understand the differences between protein family abundances that best discriminate between age groups in the …

Filters And Matrix Factorization, Myung-Sin Song, Palle E. T. Jorgensen Nov 2015

Filters And Matrix Factorization, Myung-Sin Song, Palle E. T. Jorgensen

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

We give a number of explicit matrix-algorithms for analysis/synthesis

in multi-phase filtering; i.e., the operation on discrete-time signals which

allow a separation into frequency-band components, one for each of the

ranges of bands, say N , starting with low-pass, and then corresponding

filtering in the other band-ranges. If there are N bands, the individual

filters will be combined into a single matrix action; so a representation of

the combined operation on all N bands by an N x N matrix, where the

corresponding matrix-entries are periodic functions; or their extensions to

functions of a complex variable. Hence our setting entails …

Evaluation Of Data-Path Topologies For Self-Timed Conditional Statements, Navaneeth Prasannakumar Jamadagni Aug 2015

Evaluation Of Data-Path Topologies For Self-Timed Conditional Statements, Navaneeth Prasannakumar Jamadagni

Dissertations and Theses

This research presents a methodology to evaluate data path topologies that implement a conditional statement for an average-case performance that is better than the worst-case performance. A conditional statement executes one of many alternatives depending on how Boolean conditions evaluate to true or false. Alternatives with simple computations take less time to execute. The self-timed designs can exploit the faster executing alternatives and provide an average-case behavior, where the average depends on the frequency of simple and complex computations, and the difference in the completion times of simple and complex computations. The frequency of simple and complex computations depends on …

Identifying Image Manipulation Software From Image Features, Devlin T. Boyter Mar 2015

Identifying Image Manipulation Software From Image Features, Devlin T. Boyter

Theses and Dissertations

As technology steadily increases in the field of image manipulation, determining which software was used to manipulate an image becomes increasingly complex for law enforcement and intelligence agencies. To combat this difficult problem, new techniques that examine the artifacts left behind by a specific manipulation are converted to features for classification. This research implemented four preexisting image manipulation detection techniques into a framework of modules: Two-Dimensional Second Derivative, One-Dimensional Zero Crossings, Quantization Matrices Identification, and File Metadata analysis. The intent is the creation of a framework to develop a capability to determine which specific image manipulation software program manipulated an …

Geometric And Pattern Recognition Combined Algorithms Applied To Digital Image Processing In Aerial Search And Rescue Applications, Jamil Efren Anaguano Correa

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The difficult task of generating an automated target detection system from aerial imagery can be achieved through different approaches. However, the robustness of any machine vision system lays on the implementation of vision algorithms. By combining geometric and pattern recognition algorithms, a more effective machine vision scheme is developed. Three modules-Color Identification (CIM), Color Matching (CMM), and Pattern Recognition (PRM)- work as main filters to process images and predict the location of targets based on a set templates. Multiple target detection is also accomplished by implementing a hide and seek method where all matching objects are scanned individually and isolated …

Rader, Kristen A. Hinton, Sherea Monica Stricklin, Harold S. Rabinovitz, Margaret C. Oliviero, Randy Hays Moss

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Background: Blue-gray ovoids (B-GOs), a critical dermoscopic structure for basal cell carcinoma (BCC), offer an opportunity for automatic detection of BCC. Due to variation in size and color, B-GOs can be easily mistaken for similar structures in benign lesions. Analysis of these structures could afford accurate characterization and automatic recognition of B-GOs, furthering the goal of automatic BCC detection. This study utilizes a novel segmentation method to discriminate B-GOs from their benign mimics.

Methods: Contact dermoscopy images of 68 confirmed BCCs with B-GOs were obtained. Another set of 131 contact dermoscopic images of benign lesions possessing B-GO mimics provided a …

Transient And Distributed Algorithms To Improve Islanding Detection Capability Of Inverter Based Distributed Generation, Mohamed Al Hosani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recently, a lot of research work has been dedicated toward enhancing performance, reliability and integrity of distributed energy resources that are integrated into distribution networks. The problem of islanding detection and islanding prevention (i.e. anti-islanding) has stimulated a lot of research due to its role in severely compromising the safety of working personnel and resulting in equipment damages. Various Islanding Detection Methods (IDMs) have been developed within the last ten years in anticipation of the tremendous increase in the penetration of Distributed Generation (DG) in distribution system. This work proposes new IDMs that rely on transient and distributed behaviors to …

On The Use Of Masking Filters In Sound Source Separation, Derry Fitzgerald, Rajesh Jaiswal Jan 2012

On The Use Of Masking Filters In Sound Source Separation, Derry Fitzgerald, Rajesh Jaiswal

Conference papers

Many sound source separation algorithms, such as NMF and related approaches, disregard phase information and operate only on magnitude or power spectrograms. In this context, generalised Wiener filters have been widely used to generate masks which are applied to the original complex-valued spectrogram before inversion to the time domain, as these masks have been shown to give good results. However, these masks may not be optimal from a perceptual point of view. To this end, we propose new families of masks and compare their performance to generalised Wiener filter masks using three different factorisation-based separation algorithms. Further, to-date no analysis …

Fast Software Multiplication In F_2[X] For Embedded Processors, Serdar Süer Erdem Jan 2012

Fast Software Multiplication In F_2[X] For Embedded Processors, Serdar Süer Erdem

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

We present a novel method for fast multiplication of polynomials over F_2 which can be implemented efficiently in embedded software. Fast polynomial multiplication methods are needed for the efficient implementation of some cryptographic and coding applications. The proposed method follows a strategy to reduce the memory accesses for input data and intermediate values during computation. This strategy speeds up the binary polynomial multiplication significantly on typical embedded processors with limited memory bandwidth. These multiplications are usually performed by the comb method or the Karatsuba-based methods in embedded software. The proposed method has speed and memory advantages over these methods on …

Spectrum Sharing And Service Pricing In Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks, Swastik Kumar Brahma Jan 2011

Spectrum Sharing And Service Pricing In Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks, Swastik Kumar Brahma

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Traditionally, radio spectrum has been statically allocated to wireless service providers (WSPs). Regulators, like FCC, give wireless service providers exclusive long term licenses for using specific range of frequencies in particular geographic areas. Moreover, restrictions are imposed on the technologies to be used and the services to be provided. The lack of flexibility in static spectrum allocation constrains the ability to make use of new technologies and the ability to redeploy the spectrum to higher valued uses, thereby resulting in inefficient spectrum utilization [23, 38, 42, 62, 67]. These limitations have motivated a paradigm shift from static spectrum allocation towards …

Global Secure Sets Of Trees And Grid-Like Graphs, Yiu Yu Ho Jan 2011

Global Secure Sets Of Trees And Grid-Like Graphs, Yiu Yu Ho

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Let G = (V, E) be a graph and let S ⊆ V be a subset of vertices. The set S is a defensive alliance if for all x ∈ S, |N[x] ∩ S| ≥ |N[x] − S|. The concept of defensive alliances was introduced in [KHH04], primarily for the modeling of nations in times of war, where allied nations are in mutual agreement to join forces if any one of them is attacked. For a vertex x in a defensive alliance, the number of neighbors of x inside the alliance, plus the vertex x, is at least the number …

Labeled Sampling Consensus A Novel Algorithm For Robustly Fitting Multiple Structures Using Compressed Sampling, Carl J. Messina Jan 2011

Labeled Sampling Consensus A Novel Algorithm For Robustly Fitting Multiple Structures Using Compressed Sampling, Carl J. Messina

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ability to robustly fit structures in datasets that contain outliers is a very important task in Image Processing, Pattern Recognition and Computer Vision. Random Sampling Consensus or RANSAC is a very popular method for this task, due to its ability to handle over 50% outliers. The problem with RANSAC is that it is only capable of finding a single structure. Therefore, if a dataset contains multiple structures, they must be found sequentially by finding the best fit, removing the points, and repeating the process. However, removing incorrect points from the dataset could prove disastrous. This thesis offers a novel …

A Graph-Based Approach To Symbolic Functional Decomposition Of Finite State Machines, Piotr Szotkowski, Mariusz Rawski, Henry Selvaraj Jun 2009

A Graph-Based Approach To Symbolic Functional Decomposition Of Finite State Machines, Piotr Szotkowski, Mariusz Rawski, Henry Selvaraj

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

This paper discusses the symbolic functional decomposition method for implementing finite state machines in field-programmable gate array devices. This method is a viable alternative to the presently widespread two-step approaches to the problem, which consist of separate encoding and mapping stages; the proposed method does not have a separate decomposition step instead, the state's final encoding is introduced gradually on every decomposition iteration. Along with general description of the functional symbolic decomposition method's steps, the paper discusses various algorithms implementing the method and presents an example realisation of the most interesting algorithm. In the end, the paper compares the results …

Proactive Service Migration For Long-Running Byzantine Fault-Tolerant Systems, Wenbing Zhao, H. Zhang Apr 2009

Proactive Service Migration For Long-Running Byzantine Fault-Tolerant Systems, Wenbing Zhao, H. Zhang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A proactive recovery scheme based on service migration for long-running Byzantine fault-tolerant systems is described. Proactive recovery is an essential method for ensuring the long-term reliability of fault-tolerant systems that are under continuous threats from malicious adversaries. The primary benefit of our proactive recovery scheme is a reduced vulnerability window under normal operation. This is achieved in two ways. First, the time-consuming reboot step is removed from the critical path of proactive recovery. Second, the response time and the service migration latency are continuously profiled and an optimal service migration interval is dynamically determined during runtime based on the observed …

Blind Deconvolution Through Polarization Diversity Of Long Exposure Imagery, Steven P. James Mar 2009

Blind Deconvolution Through Polarization Diversity Of Long Exposure Imagery, Steven P. James

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the algorithm developed in this thesis was to create a post processing method that could resolve objects at low signal levels using polarization diversity and no knowledge of the atmospheric seeing conditions. The process uses a two-channel system, one unpolarized image and one linearly polarized image, in a GEM algorithm to reconstruct the object. Previous work done by Strong showed that a two-channel system using polarization diversity on short exposure imagery could produce images up to twice the diffraction limit. In this research, long exposure images were simulated and a simple Kolmogorov model used. This allowed for …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An effective method for extracting parameters of a Debye or a Lorentzian dispersive medium over a wideband frequency range using a genetic algorithm (GA) and a transmission-line model is presented. Scattering parameters (S-parameters) of the transmission-line sections, including a parallel plate, microstrip, and stripline, are measured. Wave equations for TEM/quasi-TEM mode with a complex propagation constant and a frequency-dependent wave impedance are used to evaluate the corresponding S-parameters in an analytical model. The discrepancy between the modeled and measured S-parameters is defined as the objective function in the GA. The GA is used for search of the dispersive-medium parameters by …
