The objective of this study is to theoretically devise an on-chip optical isolator which is monolithically integrated with a semiconductor waveguide layer yielding low loss. The optical properties of iron are modeled for the use of optical waveguide isolators by improving the Brendel-Bormann model. Our model for iron shows excellent fit with the optical data up to 30 electronvolts (eV). The semiconductor optical waveguide isolator with magneto-optic layers based on non-reciprocal loss shift is developed in this study. Fe, Co, and Ni metals as well as cerium-substituted yttrium iron garnet (Ce:YIG) have been used as magneto-optic layers. We have shown …

The auditory evoked potential (AEP) is an electric potential generated in the brain in response to auditory stimuli. It has clinical importance in the detection of newborn infant hearing loss. The signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the AEP is low, so signal averaging is typically employed to estimate it. Often, thousands of trials must be averaged before a sufficiently high SNR estimate is obtained.

Discrete-time notch filters can be divided into infinite impulse response (IIR) and finite impulse response (FIR) notch filters. Infinite impulse response notch filters are easy to design and implement but suffer from nonlinear phase characteristics and unacceptable startup transients. Finite impulse response filters on the other hand can be designed to have linear phase but require more coefficients to achieve narrow notch widths. Multiple frequency FIR notch filters that can effectively reject several selected spectral regions while providing high transmission at frequencies outside the rejected regions have applications in communication systems, radar systems and biomedical signal processing.

A 1-GS/s 8-bit single-channel successive-approximation-register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) using coarse and fine comparators with fully background comparator offset calibration is presented. Low-power coarse comparators and low-noise fine comparators are both employed to improve the comparator power efficiency. Non-binary digital-to-analog converter (DAC) with redundancy is employed to tolerate possible errors in the most-significant-bit (MSB) decisions. A novel comparator offset calibration scheme is proposed to remove the offsets between the different comparators, without slowing down the speed of the SAR conversion. Structural tests have many advantages over functional patterns. The fault coverage of structural patterns is generally higher and easier to quantify, well-known algorithms are available to generate them, and they are often a much easier choice for debugging and diagnosis. In order to transition the GPU-accelerated CT reconstruction algorithm to a more clinical environment, a graphical user interface is implemented. Some optimization methods on the implementation are presented. We describe the alternating minimization (AM) algorithm as the updating algorithm, and the branchless distance-driven method for the system forward operator. We introduce a version of the Feldkamp-Davis-Kress algorithm to generate the initial image for our alternating minimization algorithm and compare it to a choice of a constant initial image. Expert labeling, tagging, and assessment are far more costly than the processes of collecting raw data. Generative modeling is a very powerful tool to tackle this real-world problem. It is shown here how these models can be used to allow for semi-supervised learning that performs very well in label-deficient conditions.

An in-line fiber-optic sensing element, a system, and methods for detecting strain using a fiber optic sensor are described that include using at least two chirped grating structures. In an implementation, an in-line fiber-optic sensing element that employs example techniques in accordance with the present disclosure in includes an optically transmissive fiber including a core and an outer layer; a Fabry-Perot cavity defined by a portion of the optically transmissive fiber and two chirped fiber-Bragg grating structures, where the two chirped grating structures are separated and are configured to reflect light.

System capacity and service coverage are the most critical performance metrics in cellular wireless communication networks. Usually, system capacity enhancements are at the expense of service coverage degradations, and vice versa. The three interested parties in the ecosystem including patients, doctors, and healthcare providers are discussed in 3 different phases. In Phase 1, machine-learning based modeling and simulation analysis is performed to remotely predict a patient's risk level of having heart diseases in real time. This work presents both a feasibility study and an investigation into the voltage-controlled spray deposition of different nanoparticles, namely, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), as well as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and tungsten disulfide (WS2) from the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) family of materials. The study considers five different types of substrates as per their potential application to next-generation device electronics. This thesis presents the derivation of both a linear and nonlinear adaptive control law for the attitude states of a spacecraft in orbit around rotating asteroids. The asteroid is assumed to be irregularly shaped and in an elliptical orbit around the sun. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) of peripheral nervous tissue offers a promising method for restoring motor function in patients suffering from complex neurological injuries. However, existing microelectrodes designed to stimulate peripheral nerve are unable to provide the type of stable, selective interface required to achieve near-physiologic control of peripheral motor axons and distal musculature. We establish that State Acquisition should be per- formed in networks at a rate which is consistent with the rate-of-change of the element or service being observed. We demonstrate that many existing monitoring and service-level prediction tools do not acquire network state in an appropriate manner. The Discrete Fractional Fourier Transform (DFRFT) has in recent years, become a useful tool for multicomponent chirp signal analysis. Chirp signals are transformed into spectral peaks in the chirp rate versus center frequency representation, whose coordinates are related to the underlying chirp parameters via a computed empirical peak to parameter mapping incorporated into the Santhanam-Peacock algorithm.

Public-key cryptography in use today can be broken by a quantum computer with sufficient resources. Microsoft Research has published an open-source library of quantum-secure supersingular isogeny (SI) algorithms including Diffie-Hellman key agreement and key encapsulation in portable C and optimized x86 and x64 implementations. For our research, we modified this library to target a deeply-embedded processor with instruction set extensions and a finite-field coprocessor originally designed to accelerate traditional elliptic curve cryptography (ECC). We observed a 6.3-7.5x improvement over a portable C implementation using instruction set extensions and a further 6.0-6.1x improvement with the addition of the coprocessor. Modification of …

Helicon plasma sources are widely used in basic plasma science, as well as for materials processing. These plasmas typically operate at high gas fill pressure, and therefore have significant densities of neutral particles. However, the role of neutrals in the overall plasma dynamics, such as ion flows, remains poorly understood. There are at least two possible mechanisms for neutrals to influence ion flows. One is an FxB drift, where F is the force exerted on ions by neutrals through collisions. Interest in Metamaterials has been rising drastically in the recent years as they have been used in several optical and RF applications, from antennas to perfect lenses and pulsed power devices. Nevertheless, the time-behavior of metamaterials remains opaque and poorly understood.
In this research work, characterization of a metamaterial structure in time and frequency-domain was made through simulations and experiments. The structure consists in a series of edge-side coupled Split Ring Resonators (SRRs) in a below cutoff waveguide. Duo to technology downscaling, embedded systems have increased in complexity and heterogeneity. Increasingly large process, voltage, and temperature variations negatively affect the design and optimization process of these systems. These factors contribute to increased uncertainties that in turn undermine the accuracy and effectiveness of traditional design approaches. In this paper, we formulate the problem of uncertainty aware mapping for multicore embedded systems as a multi-objective optimization problem.
