Simulated mirror displays have a promising prospect in applications, due to its capability for virtual visualization. In most existing mirror displays, cameras are placed on top of the displays and unable to capture the person in front of the display at the highest possible resolution. The lack of a direct frontal capture of the subject's face and the geometric error introduced by image warping techniques make realistic mirror image rendering a challenging problem. Over the past ten years, hybrid systems, and piecewise affine (PWA) systems in particular have been viewed as viable option for modelling nonlinear systems. Many methods have been developed to cater for the identification of a PWA model from input/output data. This thesis focuses on the clustering based identification approach. This method uses a Least Squares (LS) identification algorithm which, in this thesis, is shown to perform poorly in practice. The clustering based algorithm is also limited by the number of initialisation parameters that need to be chosen. These parameters have a significant influence on the resulting PWA model accuracy, …

In recent years the motivation for comfort applications e.g. infotainment, file exchange and vehicle to vehicle (V2V) multiplayer gaming amongst others, has emerged as an active area of vehicular communications and network research. The success of such applications relies on the ability of a geo-routing protocol to deliver communication packets in a frequently disconnected communication environment. Reconfiguration sensing antenna (rsa) is a novel antenna concept, which not only can transmit or receive radio waves but also can sense the surrounding environment. The environment sensing is realized by reconfiguring the antenna's characteristics, such as resonant frequency, and radar cross section (rcs). A Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) is a mechanical pump that helps patients with heart failure conditions. This rotary pump works in parallel to the ailing heart and provides an alternative path for blood flow from the weak left ventricle to the aorta. The LVAD is controlled by the power supplied to the pump motor. An increase in the pump motor power increases the pump speed and the pump flow. Spherical micro- and nano-particles have found widespread use in many various applications from paint to cosmetics to medicine. Due to the multiplicity of desired particle material(s), structure, size range, and functionality, many approaches exist for generating such particles. Bottom-up methods such as chemical synthesis have a high yield and work with a wide range of materials; however, these processes typically lead to large polydispersity and cannot produce structured particles. A superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) includes a high inductance coil that can act as a constant source of direct current. A SMES unit connected to a power system is able to absorb and store both active and reactive power from this system and to inject these powers into this system when they are needed. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol/nitrogen (PVA/N) hybrid thin films doped with sharp-sword ZnO nanowires with insulating effect and wide-range spectrum are demonstrated for the first time. PVA/N doped ZnO nanocomposites were developed by blending PVA and N-doped ZnO nanowires in water at room temperature. Measurements from the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, and photoluminescence emission (PL) spectra of the products show that nitrogen is successfully doped into the ZnO wurtzite crystal lattice. Ionizing radiation detecting microstructured optical fibers are fabricated, modeled and experimentally measured for X-ray detection in the 10-40 keV energy range. These fibers operate by containing a scintillator material which emits visible light when exposed to ionizing radiation. An X-ray source characterized with a CdTe spectrometer is used to quantify the X-ray detection efficiency of the fibers. The solid state CdTe detector is considered 100% efficient in this energy range. A liquid filled microstructured optical fiber (MOF) is presented where numerical analysis and experimental observation leads to a geometric theory of photon transmission using total internal reflection. CdTe is an excellent material for infrared detectors and photovoltaic applications. The efficiency of CdTe/CdS solar cells has increased very rapidly in the last 3 years to ~20% but is still below the maximum theoretical value of 30%. Although the short-circuit current density is close to its maximum of 30 mA/cm2, the open circuit voltage has potential to be increased further to over 1 Volt. The main limitation that prevents further increase in the open-circuit voltage and therefore efficiency is the high defect density in the CdTe absorber layer. Metamaterials and photonic crystals are engineered composites that exhibit electromagnetic properties superior to those found in nature. They have been shown to produce novel and useful phenomena that allow extraordinary control over the electromagnetic field. One of these phenomena is self-collimation, an effect observed in photonic crystals in which a beam of light propagates without diffraction and is forced to flow in the direction of the crystal. Spectral- and time-domain analysis of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) signal is widely used as a quantitative marker of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) activity. A robust algorithm was developed to derive HRV from photoplethysmographic (PPG) signals, to compute FFT- and AR-based spectra of these HRV signals, and to determine time- and frequency-domain features. This algorithm has detrending, sample-rate reductions, false-peak removal, automatic peak detection, peak-to-peak (P-P) interval detection and correction, time-domain feature extraction, HRV signal generation, and spectral-domain feature extraction from the HRV signal. Although brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can be used in several different ways to restore communication, communicative BCI has not approached the rate or efficiency of natural human speech. Electrocorticography (ECoG) has precise spatiotemporal resolution that enables recording of brain activity distributed over a wide area of cortex, such as during speech production. In this study, we investigated words that span the entire set of phonemes in the General American accent using ECoG with 4 subjects. We classified phonemes with up to 36% accuracy when classifying all phonemes and up to 63% accuracy for a single phoneme. Further, misclassified phonemes follow articulation …

Faculty from the Electrical Engineering and Design Engineering Technology Departments at Trine University have developed a joint design module for upper-level courses in their respective disciplines. In this module, student teams collaborate in designing and prototyping the electronics and packaging for a hand-held sensor system. The principal objective of the collaboration is for students to incorporate design factors external to their discipline in a program-focused design project. This effort advances the students' abilities to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams during their senior capstone courses. A hybrid-cascade (HC) coupled-line phaser configuration is presented to synthesize enhanced group delay responses for high-resolution radio-analog signal processing. Using exact analytical transfer functions, the superiority of HC coupled-line phasers over conventional transversally cascaded C-section phasers is demonstrated and verified using full-wave simulations. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
