The structural, dynamical, electronic, and thermoelectric properties of rock-salt and wurtzite Cd1-xZnxO alloys, VTiRhZ (Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn) and ZrTiRhZ (Ge, Sn) quaternary Heusler alloys (QHAs) were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. From these calculations, the alloys were identified as potential materials for future thermoelectric applications. Furthermore, the magnetic and spin-polarization properties of these QHAs were investigated. The total magnetic moments were found to be integer values for all QHAs. In addition, all studied QHAs except VTiRhAl possess a half-metallic behavior with a 100% spin-polarization. The half-metallic ferromagnetic behavior makes them promising …

A novel controlled phase gate for photonic quantum computing is proposed by exploiting the powerful nonlinear optical responses of atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and it is shown that such a gate could elicit a π-rad phase shift in the outgoing electric field only in the case of two incident photons and no other cases. This dissertation work presents two novel converter topologies (a three-level ANPC inverter utilizing hybrid Si/SiC switches and an Asymmetric Alternate Arm Converter (AAAC) topology) that are suitable for high efficiency and high-power density energy conversion systems. The operation principle, modulation, and control strategy of these newly introduced converter topologies are presented in detail supported by simulation and experimental results. The junction temperature of a power module is measured non-intrusively and uninterrupted in its application by analyzing the dependency of gate resistance to temperature. The circuit configuration proposed consists of altering the gate loop path and adding a basic peak detection circuit with an added low-pass filter to accurately measure the small differences seen during a temperature change on the internal gate resistance. Since the early 2000s heavy-metal-free quantum dots (QDs) such as CuInS2/ZnS have attempted to replace CdSe, their heavy-metal-containing counterparts. CuInS2/ZnS is synthesized in a two-step process that involves the fabrication of CuInS2 (CIS) nanocrystals (NCs) followed by the addition of zinc precursors. Instead of the usual core/shell architecture often exhibited by binary QDs, coating CIS QDs results in alloyed and/or partially alloyed cation-exchange (CATEX) QDs.
