Hierarchical Power Converter Physical Design, Tristan Mark Evans
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The field of power electronics is undergoing rapid advancement that is driven by the need for further electrification in all aspects of power generation and transmission, transportation, and consumer goods. Recent advances in wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductor technologies continue to push their adoption in systems with higher power densities and conversion efficiencies. However, the way in which the components of these systems are designed has not kept pace with the rapidly evolving landscape of their applications and often requires costly, manual design iteration. Therefore, new methods are needed to improve this design process. Packaging of power devices is a critical …

High Bandwidth Hybrid Current Sensor Readout Interface For Power Applications, Asma Mahar
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
High-density and power-efficient circuits have become realizable with the advent of wide bandgap semiconductor devices due to their high switching speed and lower conduction/switching losses. The operation of these circuits requires current information for protection, monitoring, and control. For the realization and a further boost in the efficiency of such power circuits, small size, non-invasive, high bandwidth current sensors with noise immunity, accuracy, and linearity are required. Various hybrid sensors have been reported to meet the requirements of emerging power circuits. A combination of a magneto resistor or Hall sensor and a coil is used to cover a wide frequency …

High-Power Dc-Dc Transformer For Medium-Voltage Grids With High-Voltage Sic Technology, Roderick Gomez
High-Power Dc-Dc Transformer For Medium-Voltage Grids With High-Voltage Sic Technology, Roderick Gomez
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this dissertation is to present the theoretical analysis, design process, application and manufacturing of a proposed solid-state transformer intended for medium-voltage applications with minimal high-frequency oscillations. Galvanic isolation on medium-voltage DC-DC converters tend to employ large number of turns in the high voltage side of the transformers leading to non-negligible parasitic stray capacitances which form resonance tanks with the transformer inductances. Therefore, it is critical to estimate these parasitic capacitances to avoid severe high frequency oscillations which can significantly impact the converter performance. The main contribution of this thesis is the extension of a proposed custom-core design …

Characterization Of Highly Doped N-Type And P-Type Silicon Carbide Ohmic Contacts, Tanner Rice
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Silicon Carbide (SiC) is a rather new material that possesses unparalleled properties when compared to Silicon. Due to its larger band gap alongside other thermal properties, SiC can survive in hotter, more radiation intensive environments, whether that be within the crust of the earth or in the reaches of space. As a desirable semiconductor for these applications, CMOS is an especially important device due to its low power consumption. However, creating a good contact between the metal and semiconductor optimally requires two different metals for the n -type and the p-type semiconductor. This greatly increases the processing time, as separate …

The Growth And Characterization Of Inn Quantum Dots Using Droplets Epitaxy In Mbe, Malak Refaei
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
III-nitride semiconductor material systems offer great potential for next-generation optoelectronic devices due to their direct bandgaps, which vary from 0.7 eV (InN) to 3.5 eV (GaN) to 6.2 eV (AlN), as well as their other unique properties. InN has gained much less attention than GaN and AlN within this family of semiconductors due to its complicated low-temperature growth. However, the prediction that an InN quantum well on GaN can become a two-dimensional (2D) topological insulator has resulted in expanding the research interest in InN. At the same time, this renewed interest has begun to reveal that the formation of an …
Stream Processor Development Using Multi-Threshold Null Convention Logic Asynchronous Design Methodology, Wassim Khalil
Stream Processor Development Using Multi-Threshold Null Convention Logic Asynchronous Design Methodology, Wassim Khalil
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Decreasing transistor feature size has led to an increase in the number of transistors in integrated circuits (IC), allowing for the implementation of more complex logic. However, such logic also requires more complex clock tree synthesis (CTS) to avoid timing violations as the clock must reach many more gates over larger areas. Thus, timing analysis requires significantly more computing power and designer involvement than in the past. For these reasons, IC designers have been pushed to nix conventional synchronous (SYNC) architecture and explore novel methodologies such as asynchronous, self-timed architecture. This dissertation evaluates the nominal active energy, voltage-scaled active energy, …

Fiber-Based Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting As A Method For Investigating Metabolism During Tetanic Contraction Of Skeletal Muscle, Kathryn Miller Priest
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is a cofactor that serves to shuttle electrons during metabolic processes such as glycolysis, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) [1-5]. The reduced form of NAD, NADH, is autofluorescent, making it a measurable characteristic in the investigation of metabolic changes. The fluorescence lifetime of NADH is dependent on the state of protein binding, specifically free or bound NADH, allowing for detection of metabolic shifts between glycolysis (free NADH) and OXPHOS (bound NADH) [6-16]. Fiber-coupled time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) equipped with an implantable needle probe can be used to measure NADH lifetime in vivo …

In this thesis work, various FFT configurations were implemented in the low-power Multi-Threshold NULL Convention Logic (MTNCL) paradigm. Analysis illustrates the area and power consumption trends along the changing of the number …
Reliability Enhancing Control Algorithms For Two-Stage Grid-Tied Inverters, Yuheng Wu
Reliability Enhancing Control Algorithms For Two-Stage Grid-Tied Inverters, Yuheng Wu
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the photovoltaic (PV) generation system, two types of grid-tied inverter systems are usually deployed: the single-stage grid-tied inverter system and the two-stage grid-tied inverter system. In the single-stage grid-tied inverter system, the input of the inverter is directly connected to the PV arrays, while an additional dc-dc stage is inserted between the PV arrays and the dc-ac inverter in the two-stage design. The additional dc-dc stage could provide a stable dc-link voltage to the inverter, which also enables new design possibilities, including the multi-MPPT operation and solar-plus-storage application. Thus, the two-stage grid-tied inverter has been widely used in the …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Since power converters shape a wide range of power electronic applications, the 'heart' of these conversions, such as solid-state switches, is crucial for achieving higher power density, lower loss, and higher efficiency operations. Although the limitations imposed by silicon-based power devices have been reduced by introducing novel devices such as IGBTs and super junction MOSFETs to allow for broader applications, solutions beyond silicon have presented a continuous challenge to the device engineers. Driving these converters at a higher switching frequency allows for higher power density. However, to support a higher frequency and operating temperature, superior materials, e.g., wide bandgap materials, …
