We have demonstrated a representative portion of an optical backplane using FET-SEED smart pixels and free-space optics to interconnect printed circuit boards (PCB's) in a two board, unidirectional link configuration. 4×4 arrays of FET-SEED transceivers were designed, fabricated, and packaged all the PCB level, The optical interconnection was constructed using diffractive microoptics, and custom optomechanics. The system was operated in two modes, one showing high data throughput, 100 MBit/sec, and the other demonstrating large connection densities, 2222 channel/cm2.

Design And Construction Of An Active Alignment Demonstrator For A Free-Space Optical Interconnect, G. C. Boisset, B. Robertson, Harvard Scott Hinton

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

An x-y active alignment system based on Risley beam steerers is described. The demonstrator features a quadrant detector which detects the misalignment error between the center of a spot of light and the center of the quadrant detector. This misalignment error is then used by a new algorithm to calculate the rotational displacement required for the two Risley beam steerers to steer the spot of light to the center of the quadrant detector. The experimental results indicate that any spot misaligned by up to 160 μm on the quadrant detector will be systematically centered by the demonstrator system.

Applying Neural Networks To Find The Minimum-Cost Coverage Of A Boolean Function, Pong P. Chu Jan 1995

Applying Neural Networks To Find The Minimum-Cost Coverage Of A Boolean Function, Pong P. Chu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

To find a minimal expression of a boolean function includes a step to select the minimum cost cover from a set of implicants. Since the selection process is an NP-complete problem, to find an optimal solution is impractical for large input data size. Neural network approach is used to solve this problem. We first formalize the problem, and then define an ''energy function'' and map it to a modified Hopfield network, which will automatically search for the minima. Simulation of simple examples shows the proposed neural network can obtain good solutions most of the time.

Transfer Function Matrix Identification From Input-Output Frequency Response Data, Zhiqiang Gao, Bruce Tabachnik, Razvan V. Savescu Jul 1994

Transfer Function Matrix Identification From Input-Output Frequency Response Data, Zhiqiang Gao, Bruce Tabachnik, Razvan V. Savescu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A new formulation of transfer function matrix identification in frequency domain is introduced. It reduces the problem to a simple linear least square problem. It is shown that such a system identification problem is a special case of a matrix interpolation problem and much insight can be obtained by examining its algebraic characteristics. A new approach is proposed to determine the transfer function matrix of a multi-input and multi-output system from the input-output data. It eliminates the common assumption in the literature that the frequency response of the system is given. Its efficiency and practicality …

Rank Conditioned Rank Selection Filters For Signal Restoration, Russell C. Hardie, Kenneth E. Barner Mar 1994

Rank Conditioned Rank Selection Filters For Signal Restoration, Russell C. Hardie, Kenneth E. Barner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A class of nonlinear filters called rank conditioned rank selection (RCRS) filters is developed and analyzed in this paper. The RCRS filters are developed within the general framework of rank selection(RS) filters, which are filters constrained to output an order statistic from the observation set. Many previously proposed rank order based filters can be formulated as RS filters. The only difference between such filters is in the information used in deciding which order statistic to output. The information used by RCRS filters is the ranks of selected input samples, hence the name rank conditioned rank selection filters. The number of …

Classification Using Set-Valued Kalman Filtering And Levi's Decision Theory, T.K. Moon, Scott E. Budge Feb 1994

Classification Using Set-Valued Kalman Filtering And Levi's Decision Theory, T.K. Moon, Scott E. Budge

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We consider the problem of using Levi's expected epistemic decision theory for classification when the hypotheses are of different informational values, conditioned on convex sets obtained from a set-valued Kalman filter. The background of epistemic utility decision theory with convex probabilities is outlined and a brief introduction to set-valued estimation is given. The decision theory is applied to a classifier in a multiple-target tracking scenario. A new probability density, appropriate for classification using the ratio of intensities, is introduced.

Epistemic Decision Theory Applied To Multiple-Target Tracking, T. K. Moon, Scott E. Budge, W. C. Stirling, J. B. Thompson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A decision philosophy that seeks the avoidance of error by trading off belief of truth and value of information is applied to the problem of recognizing tracks from multiple targets (MTT). A successful MTT methodology should be robust in that its performance degrades gracefully as the conditions of the collection become less favorable to optimal operation. By stressing the avoidance, rather than the explicit minimization, of error, the authors obtain a decision rule for trajectory-data association that does not require the resolution of all conflicting hypotheses when the database does not contain sufficient information to do so reliably. This rule, …

Electronic Simulation Of The Temporal Characteristics Of Photon Memory Echoes And Some Related Applications, Yuwen Kuo, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee Aug 1993

Electronic Simulation Of The Temporal Characteristics Of Photon Memory Echoes And Some Related Applications, Yuwen Kuo, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The characteristics of nonlinear photon memory echoes are investigated by means of SPICE simulations using equivalent resonator ensembles. By developing implicit nonlinear circuit models in the memory echo domain, the triple product formalism of electronic holography, involving correlation and convolution, is tested for the storage and recall of arbitrary signals and/or data bit streams in both time-inverted and nontime-inverted modes. Furthermore, a few specific optical data processing applications are also simulated in which the mixed binary multiplication of two or more binary bit streams is achieved.

Higher order products, optical pattern recognition, and other possible applications are also discussed. It …

The Application Of Neural Networks To Optimal Robot Trajectory Planning, Daniel J. Simon May 1993

The Application Of Neural Networks To Optimal Robot Trajectory Planning, Daniel J. Simon

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Interpolation of minimum jerk robot joint trajectories through an arbitrary number of knots is realized using a hardwired neural network. Minimum jerk joint trajectories are desirable for their similarity to human joint movements and their amenability to accurate tracking. The resultant trajectories are numerical rather than analytic functions of time. This application formulates the interpolation problem as a constrained quadratic minimization problem over a continuous joint angle domain and a discrete time domain. Time is discretized according to the robot controller rate. The neuron outputs define the joint angles (one neuron for each discrete value of time) and the Lagrange …

Suboptimal Robot Joint Interpolation Within User-Specified Knot Tolerances, Daniel J. Simon, Can Isik May 1993

Suboptimal Robot Joint Interpolation Within User-Specified Knot Tolerances, Daniel J. Simon, Can Isik

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Approximation of a desired robot path can be accomplished by interpolating a curve through a sequence of joint-space knots. A smooth interpolated trajectory can be realized by using trigonometric splines. But, sometimes the joint trajectory is not required to exactly pass through the given knots. The knots may rather be centers of tolerances near which the trajectory is required to pass. In this article, we optimize trigonometric splines through a given set of knots subject to user-specified knot tolerances. The contribution of this article is the straightforward way in which intermediate constraints (i.e., knot angles) are incorporated into the parameter …

A Fault-Tolerant Optimal Interpolative Net, Daniel J. Simon, Hossny El-Sherief Mar 1993

A Fault-Tolerant Optimal Interpolative Net, Daniel J. Simon, Hossny El-Sherief

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The optimal interpolative (OI) classification network is extended to include fault tolerance and make the network more robust to the loss of a neuron. The OI Net has the characteristic that the training data are fit with no more neurons than necessary. Fault tolerance further reduces the number of neurons generated during the learning procedure while maintaining the generalization capabilities of the network. The learning algorithm for the fault tolerant OI Net is presented in a recursive format, allowing for relatively short training times. A simulated fault tolerant OI Net is tested on a navigation satellite selective problem.

Explicit Asymmetric Bounds For Robust Stability Of Continuous And Discrete-Time-Systems, Zhiqiang Gao, P J. Antsaklis

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The problem of robust stability in linear systems with parametric uncertainties is considered. Explicit stability bounds on uncertain parameters are derived and expressed in terms of linear inequalities for continuous systems and inequalities with quadratic terms for discrete-time systems. Cases where system parameters are nonlinear functions of an uncertainty are also examined

A Complexity Analysis Of Smart Pixel Switching Nodes For Photonic Extended Generalized Shuffle Switching Networks, Thomas J. Cloonan, Gaylord W. Richards, Anthony L. Lentine, Frederick B. Mccormick, Harvard Scott Hinton, Stephen J. Hinterlong

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper studies the architectural tradeoffs found in the use of smart pixels for nodes within photonic switching interconnection networks are discussed. The particular networks of interest within the analysis are strictly nonblocking extended generalized shuffle (EGS) networks. Several performance metrics are defined for the analysis, and the effect of node size on these metrics is studied. Optimum node sizes are defined for each of the performance metrics and system-level limitations are identified.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Progress in the development of self-electrooptic-effect devices (SEEDs) is discussed. The devices include the resistor-SEED (R-SEED) device, which can be viewed as a simple NOR gate. The symmetric SEED (S-SEED) and the logic-SEED (L-SEED) devices with improved features, functionality, and performance are also considered. The integration of FETs with multiple quantum well (MQW) modulators (FET-SEED), enables optical interconnections of electronic circuits. Where the SEED technology can be used is discussed, and an experimental optical switching fabric made using these devices is described.

Interaction Of Profiled Light With Contrapropagating Acoustic Waves: Fourier Transform Approach, Partha P. Banerjee, Chen-Wen Tarn, Jaw-Jueh Liu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A straightforward Fourier-transform approach is employed to investigate acousto-optic interaction between an input optical beam with arbitrary profile and contrapropagating cw sound in the Bragg regime. The process can be analyzed in terms of the simultaneous scattering of light by the two sound waves in the interaction region. Analytic expressions for the equivalent transfer functions are obtained and the scattered light profiles are plotted.

Analysis Of Multifrequency Dispersive Optical Bistability And Switching In Nonlinear Ring Cavities With Large Medium-Response Times, Pawel Pliszka, Partha P. Banerjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Using a simple model of a ring cavity comprising a cubically nonlinear medium, we analyze dispersive optical bistability in the presence of more than one spectral component. We show the phenomenon of so-called competition for resonance. In addition to presenting cavity characteristics for the cases of two and three different frequencies, we also discuss the general method for finding steady-state solutions and checking their stability. A simple and efficient algorithm, based on a relaxation method, is devised to find steady-state solutions satisfying appropriate boundary conditions. The relaxation dynamics is physically related to a finite response time of the medium.

This venture was born initially out of the desire to make those works of Bengali literature which have moved me profoundly, and which I consider first-rate by any yardstick, available to friends and fellow enthusiasts who cannot read the original. In attempting to channel literary and philosophical masterpieces into a different medium, I Have experienced firsthand the formidable challenge that a translator must face because not only of the barrier imposed by the languages involved, but perhaps more so because .of his or her own severely inadequate faculty being called upon to match both the genius and the inspiration of …

Photonics In Switching, Harvard S. Hinton Jan 1992

Photonics In Switching, Harvard S. Hinton

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

One of the keys to the future of telecommunications companies will be their ability to provide new broadband services to both the business community and residential customers. With the new services will come the need for the equivalent of a broadband switching office. Such a system could require the capability of supporting in excess of 10000 users with broadband channel bit rates exceeding 100 Mb/s. This implies a switching fabric the aggregate bit rate of which could be greater than 1 Tb/s. Guided-wave technology and free-space technology switching fabrics are discussed. Three time-division-based switching fabrics are proposed, and two wavelength-division-based …

Transient Stability Hierarchical Control In Multimachine Power Systems, A Rubbai, F. Eugenio Villaseca Nov 1989

Transient Stability Hierarchical Control In Multimachine Power Systems, A Rubbai, F. Eugenio Villaseca

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The authors present the optimal transient stability control problem in a hierarchical structure for multimachine power systems. The two-level structure retains the local closed-loop controls, thereby easing its implementation on existing systems. The formulation accounts for nonlinearities and interconnections, and the optimization of the system transient performance is obtained with less computational effort. Since the computations are distributed among the many local feedback subsystems, the storage and solution times are considerably less than those required by a single overall centralized controller. This advantage becomes much stronger as the system size increases. For illustration purposes, this technique was applied successfully to …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The symmetric self-electrooptic-effect device (S-SEED), a structure consisting of two p-i-n diodes electrically connected in series and acting as an optically bistable set-reset latch, is discussed. Applications and extensions of this device are also discussed. The devices do not require the critical biasing that is common to most optically bistable devices and thus is more useful for system applications. They have been optically cascaded in a photonic ring counter and have been used to perform different NOR, OR, NAND, and AND logic functions. Using the same device, a differential modulator that generates a set of complementary output beams with a …

Fast Thermal Generation Rescheduling, F. Eugenio Villaseca, B. Fardanesh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A new dynamic programming algorithm for fast rescheduling thermal generation is presented. The savings in computational times are brought about by the introduction of two new techniques: the variable truncation dynamic programming and the limitation of the solution space to be searched. Several examples on a 20 machine system are used to illustrate the application of the algorithm and to show that optimal solutions are obtained at significantly reduced computational times.

Two-Step Optimal Thermal Generation Scheduling, B Fardanesh, F. Eugenio Villaseca May 1986

Two-Step Optimal Thermal Generation Scheduling, B Fardanesh, F. Eugenio Villaseca

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A new approach to the solution of the optimal thermal generation scheduling problem is presented. The problem is solved in two steps. As a first step, the optimal production schedule for the next day is obtained based on a daily load forecast, reserve capacity requirements, and present status of generating units. The second-step algorithm uses the results of the first step and adjusts the previous schedule to meet new constraints developed during the course of the day. Variable truncation dynamic programming is proposed as a new method to reduce computation effort. To eliminate the need for solving the …

Investigation Of Electronic Holography Using Spice Computer Simulation Experiments, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee Dec 1985

Investigation Of Electronic Holography Using Spice Computer Simulation Experiments, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Using SPICE experiments, it has been possible to verify most of the important aspects of electronic holography. The generation and properties of dynamic echoes under different types of nonlinearities have been extensively tested, and some new information has been garnered in the process. The case of pulse and generalized memory echoes has also been tested, and the results have been fairly satisfactory. Most of all, the simplicity with which the intriguing concept of memory echoes has translated into the circuit implementation on SPICE, and the closeness of the results to predicted behavior have been somewhat of a pleasant surprise.
