Conical antennas are widely used in many applications because of their broad input impedance bandwidth and omni-directional radiation pattern. However, conical antennas usually have three-dimensional structures and are, hence, relatively difficult to fabricate and integrate. In this thesis, a quasi-planar conical antenna is proposed, where the simulation and measurement results indicate that dielectric loading could mechanically stabilize the antenna while keeping the input impedance invariant within a broad band. JPEG2000, the international standard for still image compression, uses the wavelet transform. The filters used in JPEG2000 for transformation are the 9/7 Daubechies filters and the 5/3 Le Gall filters. At present, to achieve image mirroring or rotation for images, one has to convert them back to spatial domain and proceed. This thesis presents methods by which it can be implemented in the wavelet domain, without extra computational complexity. Modern audio and speech coding systems use filterbank and transform coding techniques to decorrelate the input signal. Cosine-modulated, perfect reconstruction, pseudo-QMF filterbanks are most commonly used for this purpose. In this thesis, we present three propositions. First, a fast algorithm for modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT) for transform lengths of the form 5× 2m and 15× 2m is presented. This algorithm is based on mapping the MDCT to DCT-II via DCT-IV and using the involutory property of the DCT-IV matrix. Most work reported so far are based on free-standing membranes. Recent advances in the fabrication process have made it possible to pattern crystalline silicon nanomembranes (NMs) and transfer to foreign substrates. An improved high gain, precision, low sensitivity current mirror is designed around a feedback circuit. This mirror utilizes a buffered Widlar current mirror to drive the constant input reference current, two beta helpers to compensate for the loss of base current and an active load, and a feedback loop in the amplifier. This design provides a comparison node for detecting the input error signal. The output collector current is substantially equal to the input reference current when driving multiple transistor loads. This work addresses the problem of simultaneous switching noise (SSN) in mixed signal environment. It is shown that the Metal Oxide Semiconductor Current Mode Logic (MCML) can be used to minimize the SSN. In short channel devices, Drain Induced Barrier Lowering (DIBL) effect causes the current mismatch problem. It is seen that this current mismatch problem aggravates SSN. Basic logic gates were designed using MCML topology at 5 Gbps. Resulting decoupled Hamiltonian system helps in formulating easy closed form solution to various optimal control problems. A new method for designing sequences of Bayes Gaussian Classifiers is presented in this thesis. First, a basic Bayes Gaussian Classifier is designed with an assumption of data being Gaussian. Then, we have used the Output Weight Optimization-Back Propagation (OWO-BP) technique to iteratively modify the coefficients of the classifier, resulting in less classification error. Through use of an iterative Gram-Schmidt procedure, to train linear functional link nets, input features are ordered from most useful to least useful. This work is motivated by a need to understand the operation of UHF radio frequency identification (RFID) systems when the tags are placed within the pipes. In this thesis, a CMOS 2.4 GHz Low noise amplifier (LNA) and Voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) was designed and simulated. These circuits were designed to operate in the 2.4GHz Industrial Scientific Medicine (ISM) band and to achieve Bluetooth and Wifi standard specifications. High-Q RF MEMS air-suspended circular spiral inductors are used in both circuits. High-Q inductors give the circuit better performance parameters including higher gain, lower noise figure and narrower bandwidth. A matrix approach is developed for the double-pass measurement arrangement.
