Underwater target detection and recognition has been widely used nowadays. In this dissertation, we show that the 3-D nested-array system can provide O(N^2) degree of freedom by using only N physical sensors when the second order statistics of the received data is used, which means we can use less sensors to get a better performance. We propose a maximum likelihood (ML) estimation algorithm for underwater target size detection. Theoretical analysis illustrates that our underwater sensor network can tremendously reduce the variance of target estimation. CT image based lung nodule detection is the most widely used and accepted method for detecting lung cancer. Most CT image based methods rely on supervised learning, which has a high number of false positives and need a large amount of pre-segmented training samples. These problems can be solved if an optimally small number of training sample images can be created, where each sample has lung nodules of similar size and shape as the target image of the actual patient. A mathematical model was developed to calculate the total power absorbed and total power reflected for a microbolometer for oblique incidence of light viz. s and p polarization by varying the angle of incidence from 1 to 89 degrees. The mathematical model was simulated using matlab in five different sensor structures. A comparative study based on simulation involving the different sensor structures was done. Vehicle platooning has been the subject of much research. Transfer function analysis of intervehicle distance errors is traditionally utilized to analyze the string stability of platoons. Consensus theory has been the subject of recent study of close-loop stability of platoons. This thesis extends the cooperative control approach to platoon behavior analysis to include the leader as an internal source of information for the communication graph of a platoon. Key to coupling crystalline oxides to semiconductors electrically, to realize functional behavior, is controlling the manner in which their bands align at the interfaces. This document reports on the three research projects on Crystalline Oxide/Semiconductor heterostructures. Video transcoding is an essential tool to promote inter-operability between different video communication systems. This thesis presents a cascaded architecture for homogeneous transcoding of High Efficiency Video Coding. In this dissertation, we firstly apply nested sampling and co-prime sampling to ultra-wide band radar, which require us to extend the algorithms from stationary signals to non-stationary signals. After that, the synthetic aperture radar data is compressed through singular-value QR-decomposition algorithm. The piecewise linear orthonormal floating search (PLOFS) is a wrapper method for feature selection that uses a piecewise linear network (PLN) to evaluate candidate subsets. PLOFS has difficulty working on high dimensional data due to overfitting and poor clustering in the PLN subset evaluation function (SEF), and high computational complexity. The presence of noise features aggravates these problems. In order to improve upon the SEF used by PLOFS we mapped the PLN to a SPLN. Nearest Neighbor algorithms are non-parametric algorithms that use distance measure techniques for classification and regressions. This thesis, first improves the traditional nearest neighbor classifier by optimizing its distance measure using a second order training algorithm. It then presents a second order method to adjust center vectors. It is shown that the distance measure weight optimization and center vector optimization, individually and together reduce the final classification error. The testing error of our algorithm is shown to be less than that of LVQ V.2.1

We experimentally demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, a stand-alone all-optical regenerator capable of simultaneous 2R regeneration of multiple WDM channels. Recently, our group has proposed an all-optical 2R regeneration scheme for multiple WDM channels. This novel multi-channel regenerator is a modified configuration of Mamyshev 2R regenerator, in which a conventional highly-nonlinear-fiber (HNLF) is replaced by a novel group-delay-managed (GDM) nonlinear medium. The proposed multi-channel regeneration scheme uses multiple concatenated GDM unit cells, where each unit cell contains a piece of HNLF and a periodic-group-delay device (PGDD). This document presents a design method and example for a time-triggered CAN (TTCAN) system which reduces latency, variability in transmission frequency, and increases data throughput relative to the traditional free-for-all CAN (FFACAN) transmission system. In addition to performance considerations for a TTCAN transmission scheme, this document also presents a simple method for measuring CPU usage on embedded systems that use either nested or non-nested interrupts. Systems that use non-nested interrupts may have their performance measured with a single GPIO pin; systems that use nested interrupts require one pin per interrupt service routine.

A systematic two-step batch approach for constructing a sparse neural network is presented. Unlike other sparse neural networks, the proposed paradigm uses orthogonal least squares (OLS) to train the network. OLS based pruning is proposed to induce sparsity in the network. Based on the usefulness of the basic functions in the hidden units, the weights connecting the output to hidden units and output to input units are modified to form a sparse neural network.
