Mathematical Model And Experimental Verification Of Spatially Multiplexed System Using Ray Theory And Modified Laguerre Gaussian Beams, Saud Alanzi
Theses and Dissertations
Spatial/Space Division Multiplexing (SDM) is based on a channel spacing technique in optical fibers that has the potential to inspire a revolution in optical communications. This patented technique provides a method to launch, transport, and detect two or more optical channels that operate at exactly the same wavelength inside a single multimode optical fiber. In addition, the patented technique added a new dimension and a new degree of photon freedom to the existing fiber multiplexing techniques and complements Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). As a result, the bandwidth of existing and new optical fiber systems maybe …
Low Complexity Transmission Schemes For Future Wireless Communication Systems, Geamel Alyami
Low Complexity Transmission Schemes For Future Wireless Communication Systems, Geamel Alyami
Theses and Dissertations
Future of mobile communication technologies is coupled with multi-antenna systems. Recent research results encourage a massive increase in the number of base station antenna elements in order to meet high data rate demands. However, at the current mobile communication frequencies (< 6 GHz), the amount of spectrum is very limited. Therefore, increase number of antenna elements and higher carrier frequencies in millimeter wavelength range need to be understood and their corresponding potentials need to be identified. Studies proposed in this work aim to identify the degree of orthogonality of millimeter wave massive MIMO channels. For this purpose, various simulation based experiments have been done which are based on the state of the art millimeter channel models. Effect of certain propagation parameters such as the probability of existence of LOS link, number of clusters, inter-antenna elements spacing and number of base station antennas in the array have been investigated. It has been found that probability of LOS link has the highest impact at the multiuser orthogonality of the multiuser channels. In general, millimeter wave massive MIMO channels are found to be low rank. Therefore, in the last part of this work a low complexity user selection algorithm is proposed. Novelty of the work is established by both performance and computational complexity comparison. Computational cost of the proposed algorithm is significantly lower than state of the art user algorithms while the sum rate performance is exactly the same as that of best user selection algorithm
An Extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometric Sensor Using Intermodal Phase Shifting And Demultiplexing Of The Propagating Modes In A Few-Mode Fiber, Julius Chatterjee
An Extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometric Sensor Using Intermodal Phase Shifting And Demultiplexing Of The Propagating Modes In A Few-Mode Fiber, Julius Chatterjee
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation demonstrates a fiber-optic phase shifted Fabry-Perot interferometer (PS-FPI) as a sensor using modal demultiplexing. Single wavelength Fabry-Perot interferometers suffer from fringe ambiguity and loss of sensitivity at fringe extremes. These hindrances cause it to be a secondary choice when being selected for a measurement task at hand, and more often than not, white light based sensors are selected in favor of the single wavelength Fabry-Perot sensors. This work aims to introduce a technique involving the demultiplexing of the propagating linearly polarized (LP) modes in few mode fibers to obtain two fringe systems from the same sensing cavity. This …
Optical Nanoantenna Impedance Matching And Duality And Hybrid Surface Phononic Waveguide, Yuancheng Xu
Optical Nanoantenna Impedance Matching And Duality And Hybrid Surface Phononic Waveguide, Yuancheng Xu
Theses and Dissertations
This work contributes to critical requirements for optical and infrared nanoantenna and waveguide applications; 1) the impedance of an optical nanoantenna is addressed, and 2) long propagation lengths and high confinement waveguide is designed. Optical nanoantennas have been studied as a means to manipulate nanoscale fields, local field enhancements, radiative rates, and emissive directional control. However, a fundamental function of antennas, the transfer of power between a coupled load and far-field radiation, has seen limited development in optical antennas owing largely to the inherent challenges of extracting impedance parameters from fabricated designs. As the transitional element between radiating fields and …

Arabic Speech Recognition Systems, Hamda M. M. Eljagmani
Theses and Dissertations
Arabic automatic speech recognition is one of the difficult topics of current speech recognition research field. Its difficulty lies on rarity of researches related to Arabic speech recognition and the data available to do the experiments. Moreover, to build Arabic speech recognition system with an optimal word error rate (WER), the system has to be completely trained to the individual user. Even though speaker dependent system can effectively achieve this by training it explicitly for this one speaker, it requires a large amount of training data. In addition speaker dependent system requires to be trained to each speaker individually. For …

Analysis, A Technique, And Incremental Learning Of Wake-Up-Word Speech Recognition, Ahmad Zuhair S. Hasanain
Theses and Dissertations
Even thought the cutting-edge speaker-independent Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems demand big training data, they barely handle time-varying speaking rates, tolerate various uttering alterations, or are robust to noise. In contrast, our Wake-Up-Word (WUW) technique is tuned to these challenges in the light ASR systems with minimal number of initial training samples. It is crucial that users of ASR systems be capable of rolling out new WUW calls swiftly and modifying ASR vocabulary at any time, such as in the cases of foreign WUW addition and adaptation to phonetic change. We had tested our proposed methodologies in the acoustic WUW-II …
Hybrid Phonon Polaritons Mimic Te Surface Wave Enhanced Supercoupling, Delroy Dominic Rebello
Hybrid Phonon Polaritons Mimic Te Surface Wave Enhanced Supercoupling, Delroy Dominic Rebello
Theses and Dissertations
The study and excitation of surface plasmon polaritons SPhPs modes in polar dielectrics have attracted the interest of a wide range of research in various fields such as biology, physics and engineering. The excitation of SPhP in optical waveguides is because of TM-component of the incident light. TE-components are usually disbarred because, for TE-polarization component, orthogonal to the TM-polarization components, of the incidence waves, no SPhP mode exists. This thesis presents a novel hybrid TE SPhP mode waveguide in the mid-infrared region. By introducing a thin layer of high index dielectric material on the polar dielectric, where SPhPs are excited, …

Interpolation Methods For Coverage Area In Cellular Systems, Abdlmagid Mohamed Basere
Interpolation Methods For Coverage Area In Cellular Systems, Abdlmagid Mohamed Basere
Theses and Dissertations
Evaluating the coverage area in a wireless network is very important for cellular system designers in order to provide good service to users. It is hard to collect the Receive Signal Level (RSL) for an entire coverage area because of many obstacles, such as buildings, lakes, and vegetation. Therefore, estimation of the coverage area is essential for locations for which it is difficult to measure the RSL. This dissertation considers the process of RSL interpolation. Two main aspects of the interpolation are considered. Firstly, various interpolation methods are considered and it was determined that a very good performance is obtained …

Surface phonon polaritons, SPhPs, result from the coupling or interaction of light with a phonon resonance. There has been extensive research into utilizing surface plasmon polaritons, SPPs, for subwavelength confinement of propagating waveguide modes for photonic integrated circuits. This work investigates the use of a multilayer system or insulatormetal-insulator (IMI) heterostructure as a SPhP-enhanced infrared waveguide where the metal response is due to phonons in a polar dielectric's Reststrahlen band. In addition, an IMI heterostructure supports types of modes: An even mode and odd mode that have their own unique trade-offs. For the odd mode as the metal film thickness …

A Robust Speaker Identification Algorithm Based On Atomic Decomposition And Sparse Redundant Dictionary Learning, Thomas James Bryan Jr.
A Robust Speaker Identification Algorithm Based On Atomic Decomposition And Sparse Redundant Dictionary Learning, Thomas James Bryan Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Speaker identification is performed in high additive white Gaussian noise environments by processing sounds as images in the time-frequency plane. The technique creates audio streams that remove background noise from speech while preserving speech quality. Atomic decomposition is implemented by the matching pursuit algorithm using Gabor or gammatone atomic dictionaries. Gabor atoms were originally proposed as fundamental building blocks of speech; whereas, gammatone atoms closely resemble the human cochlear impulse response. Atomic decomposition creates a sparsely populated time-frequency vector referred to as weight space. The populated positions in weight space have amplitude weights that are proportional to localized energy in …

Analysis Of The Fm Radio Spectrum For Secondary Licensing Of Low-Power Short-Range Cognitive Internet-Of-Things Devices Via Cognitive Radio, Derek Thomas Otermat
Theses and Dissertations
The number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices is predicated to reach 200 billion by the year 2020. This rapid growth is introducing a new class of low-power short-range wireless devices that require the use of radio spectrum for the exchange of information. To offset this extraneous demand for radio spectrum, the low-power short-range IoT devices need to utilize vacant spectrum through the use of Cognitive Radio (CR). The analysis presented in this dissertation indicates that the FM radio spectrum is underutilized in areas of the continental United States that have a population of 100,000 or less. These locations have …

Angle Of Attack Visualization: A Proposal For A Tangible Interactive In-Flight Loss Of Control Recovery System, Nicholas Kasdaglis
Theses and Dissertations
The Trajectory Recovery System (TRS) is a proposed system that will help a pilot quickly restore the aircraft to controlled flight. In-flight Loss of Control (I-LOC) is the leading cause of aviation fatalities. While attempts to address this threat have mainly focused upon prevention and avoidance, there has been little offered for recovery from an I-LOC event. The work presented herein addresses this gap. Offered here will be a Human- Centered Design (HCD) solution to the problem of I-LOC. The TRS is a real-world application arising from robust multi-agent models of human-automation teaming. The use of such models transforms cognitive …

Environmental protection through implementation of green energies is progressively becoming a daily reality. Numerous sources of green energy were introduced in recent years. Although this process initially started with difficulties, it finally resulted in an acceleration and implementation of new green energy technologies. Nonetheless, new major obstacles are emerging. The most worldwide difficult obstacle encountered, especially for wind and photovoltaic electric power plants, is the not regular and predictable green energy production. This study proposes solutions designed to solve this unpleasant aspect of irregular production of green energy. The basic idea refers to the construction of specially designed nuclear power …

Surface phonon polaritons (SPhPs), similar to it cousin phenomenon surface plasmon polaitons (SPPs), are quasi-neutral particles resulting from light-matter coupling that can provide high modal confinement and long propagation in the mid to long infrared (IR). Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is a combination of two connected optical directional couplers (ODC). With the use of SPhPs, sub-wavelength feature sizes and modal areas can be achieved and to this end a hybrid SPhP waveguide, where propagation length and modal area can be trade-off, will be employed in the design of an ODC and MZI. This endeavor analyzes and characteristics both an ODC and …

Spatial domain multiplexing (SDM), also known as space division multiplexing, adds a new degree of photon freedom to existing optical fiber multiplexing techniques by allocating separate radial locations to different channels of the same wavelength as a function of the input launch angle. These independent MIMO channels remain confined to their designated locations while traversing the length of the carrier fiber owing to helical propagation of light inside the fiber core. As a result, multiple channels of the same wavelength can be supported inside a single optical fiber core, thereby allowing spatial reuse of optical frequencies and multiplication of fiber …

Spatial domain multiplexing/space division multiplexing (SDM) can increase the bandwidth of existing and futuristic optical fibers by an order of magnitude or more. In the SDM technique, we launch multiple singlemode pigtail laser sources of the same wavelength into a carrier multimode fiber at different angles. The launching angles decide the output of the carrier fiber by allocating separate spatial locations for each channel. Each channel follows a helical trajectory while traversing the length of the carrier fiber, thereby allowing spatial reuse of optical frequencies. We launch light from five different single-mode pigtail laser sources (of same wavelength) at different …

The analysis presented in this paper indicates that the FM radio spectrum is underutilized in the areas of the continental United States that have a population of 100000 or less. These locations have vacant FM radio spectrum of at least 13 MHz with sufficient spectrum spacing between adjacent FM radio channels. The spectrum spacing provides the required bandwidth for data transmission and provides enough bandwidth to minimize interference introduced by neighboring predicted and unpredicted FM radio stations and other low-power short-range Internet of Thing (IoT) devices. To ensure that low-power short-range IoT devices maintain reliable communications vacant radio spectrum, such …

Infrared Surface Phonon Polariton Waveguides On Sic Substrate, Yuchen Yang, Franklin Muriuki Manene, Brian A. Lail
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waveguides harbor many potential applications at visible and near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. However, dispersive properties of the metal in the waveguide yields weakly coupled and lossy plasmonic modes in the mid and long wave infrared range. This is one of the major reasons for the rise in popularity of surface phonon polariton (SPhP) waveguides in recent research and micro-fabrication pursuit. Silicon carbide (SiC) is a good candidate in SPhP waveguides since it has negative dielectric permittivity in the long-wave infrared (LWIR) spectral region, indicative that coupling to surface phonon polaritons is realizable. Introducing surface phonon polaritons for …

Planar leaky-wave antennas (LWA) that are capable of full-space scanning have long since been the pursuit for applications including, but not limited to, integration onto vehicles and into cameras for wide-angle of view beam-steering. Such a leaky-wave surface (LWS) was designed for long-wave infrared frequencies with frequency scanning capability. The LWS is based on a microstrip patch array design of a leaky-wave impedance surface and is made up of gold microstrip patches on a grounded zinc sulphide substrate. A 1D composite right/left-handed (CRLH) metamaterial made by periodically stacking a unit cell of the LWS in the longitudinal direction to form …

The goal in the design of an efficient and low-noise antenna coupled receiver is to achieve a maximal capture cross section for the incident electromagnetic radiation compared to the dimensions of the sub-wavelength sized sensor loading the antenna. Collection efficiency captures this concept of power output/input and is made up of several subefficiencies. In the ideal case all of the available, incident power is collected and transferred to the load. However, many of the fundamental limits of antennas are based on theory describing the transmitting mode, whereas certain questions remain open for receiving antennas. Textbook antenna theory predicts that only …

An effective color night vision system for ground vehicle navigation should operate in near real-time to be practical. We described a system that uses a public database as a source of color information to colorize night vision imagery. Such an approach presents several problems due to differences between acquired and reference imagery. Our system performed registration, colorizing, and reference updating in near real-time in an effort to help drivers of ground vehicles during night to see a colored view of a scene.

The success of a color night navigation system often depends on the accuracy of the colors in the resulting image. Often, small regions can incorrectly adopt the color of large regions simply due to size of the regions. We presented a method to improve the color accuracy of a night navigation system by initially splitting a fused image into two distinct sections before colorization. We split a fused image into two sections, generally road and sky regions, before colorization and processed them separately to obtain improved color accuracy of each region. Using this approach, small regions were colored correctly when …

Measurement Based Statistical Model For Path Loss Prediction For Relaying Systems Operating In 1900 Mhz Band, Masoud Dao Hamid
Theses and Dissertations
Relays play important role in deployment of Long Term Evolution (LTE) and LTE-Advanced systems. They are used to enhance coverage, throughput and system capacity. The impact of the relay deployment on the network planning has to be modeled so that the above mentioned goals can be achieved. For successful modeling one needs to predict the path loss on the link between an eNodeB and a relay station. The review of literature shows that there is a general shortage of measured data to help empirical understanding of the propagation conditions in relay environment. This dissertation aims at developing empirical path loss …
Holographic-Based Leaky Wave Antennas And Phonon-Enhanced Waveguides For Infrared Applications, Franklin Muriuki Manene
Holographic-Based Leaky Wave Antennas And Phonon-Enhanced Waveguides For Infrared Applications, Franklin Muriuki Manene
Theses and Dissertations
This work contributes to critical requirements for antenna-coupled detection applications: 1) large capture cross section with design control of angular response and 2) long propagation lengths of complex signals. Antenna-coupled detectors for infrared applications provide appreciable capture cross sections while delivering signals to sub-wavelength-sized detectors. In this work, leaky-wave antennas are considered for the first time in the infrared spectrum. Design characterization of angular radiation patterns as well as polarization is presented. While leaky-wave antennas hold great promise for enhancing capture cross section, thus narrowing the field of view of the detector, there is a parallel need to preserve coherent …
